(139) WATCH OUT FOR MOHAMMAD MANIK HOSSAIN

POSSIBLE PALAU TEAM TO ISTANBUL, TURKEY 2012?

Depending on their financial capacity to provide themselves their own airfare, these 4 chess players (l-r) Tito Cabunagan, Roberto Hernandez, Mohammad Manik Hossain and Ferdie Altea is a possible Palau chess team to the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey. Cabunagan for sure can provide his own airfare while the others in the top 5 of Palau list will be needing sponsorship. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

WATCH OUT FOR
MOHAMMAD MANIK HOSSAIN

CHESS AND MUSIC might be the things that will motivate him in this year's edition of 2010-2011 Palau National Chess Championship.

In their practice games at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 on Wednesday, Nov. 10, Mohammad Manik Hossain upset Roberto Hernandez, 3rd seed in the PNCC, twice to the delight of Hernandez as he noticed the big improvement on Manik's game.

Although the ensuing practice games were won by Hernandez, those first victories of Manik over Hernandez even in practice games were a motivation for him to even put his sight on the possibility of joining the Palau team in the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.

Tito Cabunagan will definitely be in Palau's team in the Olympiad in Turkey as he is capable enough to shoulder his own airfare to Istanbul.

There is no election of FIDE President in 2012 so Palau chess players can't get anything or sponsors of airfare.

Those who are aspiring to be in the team should start saving now for airfare. Manik is willing to start saving at least $50.00 a month. He said that Turkey is very close to Bangladesh and he might take a vacation in August 2012 before the start of Olympiad in Turkey as a starting point to save cost of travel if he can make it to the team.

Manik is also planning to learn to play organ (or keyboard) and he was given by Hernandez some tips on how to learn fast and efficient if he has his own keyboard to practice on.

His future visits to Dorm 1 will include chess and music and this combination is proven effective by Hernandez.

After their practice games, Manik paid his registration fee of $10.00. He is okay whatever is the amount of registration fee.

Menandro Manuel suggests $100.00 for rated players fee, $50.00 or $75.00 to Jimboy de Jesus and $20.00 or $45.00 to the unrated players.

Dennis Gonzales was the first one to pay his registration fee to Aurora, Gene Pastrana's wife.

Tutii Joe Chilton and Flavin Andres, the 2 invited Palauan chess players, will miss this PNCC due to schedule conflict. Joe will visit the tournament site on opening round.

Bernard Garcia will come back to Palau on Nov. 22. He can catch up with ease if he will play in both tournament sites.

Romeo Caballes is on vacation and the definite date of his return is still uncertain.

Elpidio Manaligod, Jun Mahor, Gonzalo Escapatoria and Mario Ramos cannot be contacted in their telephone addresses.

The other confirmed participants are 1: Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. 2. Menandro Manuel, 3. Roberto Hernandez 4. Tito Cabunagan 5. Jimboy de Jesus, 6. Andres Mestizo II 7. Mohammad Manik Hossain, 8. Masum Billah 9. Dennis Gonzales 10. Ferdie Altea 11. Jeffrey Negrillo 12. Elizalde Madrinan, 13. Amante Caballero

Manik has one request to Hernandez, who will also act as Arbiter during the tourney. His request is that when he is playing and there are people watching (chess players or not), that nobody will speak Tagalog especially when talking to his opponent.

He experienced this violation during his game with Gene's son Ken 2 years ago. This request will also be applied when Masum is playing.

The drawing of players' number will be done before the start of the first official game of this event. The unconfirmed players will be put at the end of the draw.
