(108) GREFIEL, OMEGA, HERNANDEZ Share Lead (TBN-Dec. 10-17, 2004)



   GREFIEL, OMEGA, HERNANDEZ SHARE LEAD

TOP SEED Eddie Grefiel (10-2-0) defeated Morton Sawaichi and got a full point by default over Mike Miguel, Jr. to tie Jose Omega (10-2-0) and Roberto Hernandez (10-3-0) for the lead in the 13th and 14th round of the 2004 Rapid Chess tournament held on Sunday, December 5 at Parish Center for Migrants and sponsored by  TFCP, Kabayan Restaurant and Margarita Borja Dalton.

Omega and Hernandez also got a full point from Miguel, Jr. who played only in the opening day and lost all his 4 games.

Hernandez defeated Morton Sawaichi in 35 moves of a Closed Sicilian Defence game. Idle Cyril Montel, Jr. (8-4-2) dropped to 4th with 9 points while Jimboy de Jesus (8-3-1) and absent Menandro Manuel stayed at 5th and 6th respectively with both getting a point each from Miguel, Jr.

Lin de Guzman, (6-7-1) the top candidate for the Most Improved Player (MIP) conquered Ivan The Conqueror Chess Computer in 44 moves of a Danish Gambit. He lost to Ivan II in the 2004 Non-master chess tourney that he hosted and sponsored in January.

In the last game of the day,he lost a winning game to Jimmy Valenzuela
(5-5-1) when he didn't force the exchange of queens and tried to beat Valenzuela by time forfeit.

Valenzuela also won over Sawaichi. All other games were default wins over Miguel, Jr.: vs. Dennis Gonzales (3-6-1); vs. Joel Azana (5-6-0); vs. Gene Pastrana (5-8-0); vs. Bong Alipoon (5-8-0) and default draw with Ivan II Chess Computer.

Omega and Alipoon will have a special game with day and time of their choice to meet their job requirement schedule.

Grefiel and Azana will have their match played in Daewoo main camp in Ngaraard.

The two newcomers, Wilson Milambiling and Pastor Fontanilla, were absent again and if they are absent again in the penultimate round on Sunday, Dec. 12, all their remaining games will be defaulted in favor of their opponents.

If they do play, time (15 minutes each to finish the game) will be applied.

Nestor Canaria, the host and sponsor of 2004 Open Chess tourney, promised to have the trophies for the winners of the said tilt to be given during the Knights and Rooks Chess Club Christmas party to be held on Dec. 19 at Image Restaurant parking area.

He also offered to contribute something for the party. So the remaining games of the current tourney will be held before the party and the awarding of trophies for the 2 tournaments will also be held.

A one-day blitz chess festival will also be held in honor of Consul General Julius Torres who introduced a blitz chess fest after the regular tournament has concluded.

PENULTIMATE ROUND PAIRINGS (Dec. 12) Absent players will lose by default. First name to play the white pieces:

Ivan II vs. Omega; Gonzales vs. Hernandez; Mariano Agustin, Jr. (3-6-0) vs. Ivan II; de Jesus vs. Agustin, Jr.; Alipoon vs. Gonzales; Ivan (5-3-1) vs. Manuel; Valenzuela vs. Gonzales; Manuel vs. Agustin, Jr. and Agustin, Jr. vs. de Guzman.

Players in the 18 years and below category will have to finish all their remaining games on Sunday. It's not best-of-three series to catch up in the last 2 weeks that players refused to play.

Absent players will lose by default. Players who did not pay their registration fee of $10.00 will not received certificates or trophies.

NOTE: There are no chess puzzles in this and last week's issues because Tia Belau Newspaper's scanner is out of order.
