Champions of Ambassador Marino Cup Chess Tilt

THE INTENSE battle of minds finally ended on Friday night, September 21, 2007 at Jean's Boutique and Store in the final round of 2nd Palau Invitational Chess Championship, now known as the Ambassador Marino Cup.

With 8 players still in contention for the top 3 slots in the penultimate and final round, the tougher players prevailed with Palau's top player Menandro 'Boy' Manuel and 18-year old Boris Michael Diez emerged winners with identical 6-1-2 win-loss-draw slate.

Antonio Aladino 'Allan' Diez, the father of Boris, also emerged in a tie with Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic with 5-3-1 card.

Using the Sonnenborn Berger system of tiebreak, Boris actually edged Manuel by a whole point but the first order of tiebreak, the direct encounter or win over the other was also a draw so they decided to split the 1st and 2nd prize pot of $250.00 and $150.00 respectively.

The elder Diez and Nedic did the same and split the $100.00 3rd place pot.

The awarding of cash prizes was held at the Philippine Embassy on Saturday at 10:00 am with Ambassador Ramoncito Marino personally gave away the prizes to the winners.

A short meeting ensued after the awarding with the generous Ambassador pledging again the cash prizes for the next Ambassador Marino Cup even if he will be assigned to other place.

The Palau Chess Federation 2008 Schedule of Events was also presented to him by its Secretary/Treasurer Roberto Hernandez to show to potential sponsors so that chess tournaments next year will have sponsors all year round.

The 2008 World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany was also discussed with the possibility of sending at least 4 players if Continetal Airlines can sponsor the airfares.

After the meeting, the father and son from Davao, Philippines proceed to the airport for their departure at 1:00 pm.

While waiting for boarding time, they played blitz chess in Alii Restaurant with Boris winning all his games over Manuel and Hernandez, Allan over Jess Toldoya and Gene Pastrana drew with Hernandez.

During his game with Montel, Jr., the author of this column Roberto Hernandez lost his wallet containing his work permit, driver's licence, Palau Royal Resort I. D., Bank of Hawaii ATM Card, SS cards, Surangel's card, Palau Publi Library card, FIDE card and some photos from '60's, '80's and '90's. He is giving the $151.00 cash in the wallet as reward to the finder. He badly needs the others, no questions ask.

FATHER AND SON LEAD
AMBASSADOR MARINO CUP CHESS TILT

THE 2ND PALAU Invitational Chess Championship, now known as the Ambassador Marino Cup, fired off on Sunday, September 15 at Jean's Boutique and Store with the father and son tandem of Alan Diez and his 18-year old son Boris as the only invited players to make it.

USA and Philippine Chess Master Almario Marlon Bernardino, National Master and International Arbiter Erwin Carag and James Infiesto didn't make it for some reasons.

Boris has a FIDE rating of 2180 and number 73 in he Philippines top list while the elder Alan has a national rating of 1964.

The Palau's top six players, Menandro Manuel (1942), Cyril Montel, Jr. (1870), Jose Omega (1870), Gene Pastrana (1870), Roberto Hernandez (1830) and Manny Nedic (1870) will try to improve their ratings while unrated Tony Villa and Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich will try to gain their international rating if they will score at least 3 points in 9 games. Morton Sawaichi didn't make it due to schedule conflict.

In the early first round of the event, players who are off on Saturday played as many games as they can with Dittrich playing four games.
He lost to Manuel in 43 moves of Slav Defence, drew with Pastrana in 45 moves of Queen's Gambit Declined, lost to Alan in 18 moves of another Slave Defence and drew with Montel in 50 moves of yet another Slav.

Manuel played 3 games winning all of them. He clobbered Omega in 41 moves of Sicilian Defence (Dragon Variation) and outwitted Villa in 37 moves of King's Gambit Accepted.

Villa suffered another setback to the elder Diez in 33 moves of Slav Defence, now gaining popularity in this event. Boris to nipped Montel, Jr. in 25 moves of Modern Defence and outdueled Hernandez in the resumption of their game at Philippine Embassy on Monday in 37 moves of Dutch Defence.

Boris kept his perfect start with a masterful conquest of Omega in 45 moves of another Modern Defence.

After losing his first two games, Villa scored 4 straight to automatically gain international ranking. He touted Hernandez in 59 moves of King's Gambit Declined, drubbed Omega in just 14 moves of King's Pawn Opening and subdued Dittrich in 46 moves of Giocco Piano.

Nedic played just 2 games so far, winning all of them over Alan of Queen's Gambit Declined and dealt Dittrich his 4th loss...

BUT... Dittrich scored the biggest upset of the event when he defeated the top seed Boris in another Queen's Gambit Declined game.

Hernandez adjourned his game against Alan to attend the Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) service. In the resumption of their game, Alan lost for the 2nd time in 36 moves of Modern Defence.

He bounced back from defeat and scored 2 straight over Omega in 24 moves of Sicilian Defence (Dragon Variation)and dealt Manuel his first loss of the tourney of Queen's Gambit Accepted.

Manuel also got his first draw with Pastrana in their Caro-Kahn Defence encounter and Pastrana missed the very neat smothered mate in his game against Omega and drew the game instead via 3-move repetition.

Resumption of games will continue till Friday and the duo from Davao will leave Palau on Saturday as they will try to make Palau their second home and be honorary members of Palau Chess Federation and might have a chance to represent Palau in the next Chess Olympics in Dresden, Germany in 2008 if they can afford the high cost of airfare and accomodation.

With the ongoing PICC, the Palau Royal Resort rating chess tournament was put to a one-week break and will resume play on Thursday with Arnold Rivera to play his first game.
