THE 2005 Chess Season will start on Sunday, January 16, with a new sponsor, Lourdes Funa and Leo Lacambra, Jr. of Palau Paradise Lions Club.
The new venue is the same place where the 2003 Age Group Chess tournament was held--beside the Galaxy Video and Palasia Hotel.
Opening day games will start after the awarding of trophies of the top three finishers (Class A and B) of the 2004 Open Chess Tournament.
After the awarding of trophies of the recently concluded 2004 Rapid Chess tournament, the cash prizes of the following will also be given: Champion --Eddie Grefiel ($20.00); 1st runner-up --Roberto Hernandez ($15.00 --already in good hands--to his wife!); 2nd runner-up--Jimboy de Jesus ($10.00); 3rd runner-up --Menandro Manuel ($10.00) and 4th runner-up -- Cyril Montel, Jr. ($10.00).
Trophies for the junior champion Em-R de Vera and 1st runner-up Chris Domingo will also be awarded.
The 2005 Regular Chess Tournament venue's first choice didn't materialize as Lin de Guzman, the Most Improved Player award winner, failed to give the chairman's letter to the Palauan businessman who expressed interest in hosting the said event. The venue is still not operational so the second one to offer was chosen.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE FORMAT OF THE 2005 REGULAR CHESS TOURNAMENT:
1. It will be a single round-robin for seniors and double round-robin for juniors (18 years and below) if the contestants in the kid's division will reach at least 4 participants. If less than 4, junior players will play in the senior division with a rook or knight handicap.
2. The time control for seniors is 90 minutes for each player to make 40 moves and another one and a half hours to make another 40 moves. Junior time control is 30 minutes for each player to finish the game (rapid chess format).
3. Registration fee is $10.00
4. There will be a Brilliancy prize of $50.00 for the player who writes his and his opponents' moves. Players are requested to write chess notations, preferably Algebraic notation, to qualify for Brilliancy prize and to keep track of the number of moves played. The top 4 seeds, Grefiel, Hernandez, Manuel and Montel, Jr. will review the best games played and will decide the Brilliancy winner unanimously.
5. Players will be allowed to use the By-The-Book chess openings of their choice and will go on their own at the end of the book line opening.
6. Ivan II Chess Computer will participate in both the senior and junior division. When playing against the computer, touch move rule will be applied. Human players can't touch any piece not intended to be moved, whether on the tournament size chessboard or on the computer's board.
7. Game day is every Sunday from 1:00 - 5:00 pm.
8. The giant chessboard will display the first game that's on progress. The next one will feature top seeds matches.
9. The Sonnenborn Berger tiebreak system will be applied to break the tie for 1st to 5th place, who will receive trophies and cash prizes.
Two days before the start of the 2005 Regular Chess tournament, the 2005 World Chess Championship Match between world champion GM Rustam Kasimdzhainov of Uzbekistan and the world's no. 1 rated player, GM Garry Kasparov, will be held in Dubai from January 14-31.
The match will be held under the patronage of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum with the prize fund of US$1,200.00. The winner of this match will play against the winner of the Vladimir Kramnik of Russia and Peter Leko of Hungary match.
