PLAYERS with the white pieces all won in the 11th and 12th round of the 2004 Rapid Chess tournament held Sunday, November 28 at the Parish Center for Migrants and sponsored by TFCP, M. B. Dalton and Kabayan Restaurant.
Jimboy de Jesus, with a win-loss-draw record of 7-3-1- defeated Gene Pastrana (4-8-0) in the first game while Jose Omega (9-2-0) beat Cyril Montel, Jr. (8-4-2) to regain the lead.
Roberto Hernandez (8-3-0) nipped de Jesus in 21 moves of Danish Gambit and Pastrana bounced back from defeat to score a full point over Lin de Guzman (5-6-1), the top candidate for Most Improved Player (MIP) award.
Ivan II Chess Computer garnered 2 impressive victories over Montel, Jr. and Bong Alipoon (4-8-0) where Montel, Jr. lost his queen in the middle game without compensation.
De Jesus triumphed over former champion Menandro Manuel (7-5-0) when the latter's clock expired while De Jesus consumed only 10 minutes in his clock.
And in the last game of the day, Hernandez won also by time forfeit over de Guzman in 49 moves of a Sicilian Defence.
De Guzman's clock expired with his promising position going in vain. He had a rook, 4 pawns and a king against Hernandez' rook, knight, king and a pawn.
Idle Eddie Grefiel (8-2-0) is still in 3rd place while de Jesus climbed another 2 spots from 7th to 5th.
Lone Palauan bet Morton Sawaichi was present but his opponent, newcomer Pastor Fontanilla and Wilson Milambiling were absent.
In the 18 years and below category, nobody showed up but last week's result was not published with Em-R de Vera (2-0-0) taking over the lead after defeating former champion Jayrome Soriano (1-2-0).
Chris Domingo is 2-2-0, Ivan II is 1-1-0 and Kelvin Cuenco is 1-2-0.
Five players had a meeting after the completion of games and discussed the planned Knights and Rooks Chess Club Christmas party to be held on Dec. 19 at Image Restaurant parking area.
A $10.00 contribution from each player is to be collected for food and drinks. Some players will bring extra dishes and a one-day blitz chess festival will be held during the party.
If there are unfinished games in the current tourney, it will be played before the party starts and the awarding will also be held at the same day.
Kabayan Restaurant, which provided refreshments in the opening day, will be asked to do the same on the closing day.
All chess enthusiasts are invited to attend or participate in the event.
Solution to last week's puzzle: 1. ... f5 2. gxf6 e.p. (en passant or in passing. The capture occurs on f6. This is one of the special moves in chess.) 2. ... Qf5+ 3. Kh4 Qh5 mate.
