Thirteen employees of PRR participated in the event except Roberto Hernandez who was billeted in the rated division that includes the top chess players of Palau.
The top 4 in the PRR employees division collided in the semifinals. Ferdinand Gutierrez of Laundry Division, defeated Jomar Alerta of Engineering/Maintenance department while Rudel Roxas, a cook at Western Section, drubbed Elizalde Madrinan, a cook at Japanese Section, to earn a final slot against Gutierrez.
On Sept. 06, Gutierrez achieved many firsts by beating Roxas to earn his first chess title and his first win in the ongoing 2011 Palau National Chess Championship in his first year in Palau. (Their final game is also their official game of 2011 PNCC to save time).
In the rated division, Menandro Manuel of Surangel and Sons, added another title to his illustrous chess career and Hernandez was a point behind to clinch the 1st runner-up plum.
PRR General Manager (GM) Isao Takahashi generously sponsors the prizes and awarded those to the winners in a simple ceremony at PRR Lobby.
Gutierrez and Manuel received a gift certificate of dinner for 1 each at Waves Restaurant while Hernandez and Roxas received a gift certificate of lunch for 1 each at Waves Restaurant.
