CHAMPION AT LAST!
(Tia Belau December 12-18, 2003 Issue of Chess Mate)
THIRD
SEED Roberto Hernandez (9-1-2) won over Mario Ramos (3-5-3) by default
to clinch the title of 2003 Senior and Junior Open Chess tournament
sponsored by Knights and Rooks Chess Club and held every Sunday at
popular C & N Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Services premises.
It
is the first championship of Hernandez in five tournaments. In the 2002
All-Filipino tourney, he finished as 2nd runner-up with a 6-3-0
win-loss-draw record.
In
the 2002 Open, he placed 9th with an 18-7-2 slate. In the 2003 Open, he
is tied at 5th with Bong Alipoon with a 9-5-1 record and also won the
most improved player.
And
in the 2003 Age Group Chess tournament, he finished tied at 5th again
with former champion Menandro Manuel with a 5-3-1 record in the Class A
category.
Second
seed Manuel (8-3-2) won his crucial final game against Jun Mahor
(7-4-2) to grad the 1st runner-up plum. Mahor is now waiting for the
result of Cyril Montel, Jr. (6-4-2) vs. Danny Dandoy (5-3-4) match to
see what place he's going to finish.
Jimmy
Valenzuela (7-4-2), the elected ice chairman of Knights and Rooks Chess
Club, won by default over Norbert Villanueva (0-7-5) and defeated
Alipoon (7-4-2).
So,
there will be a 3-way tie for last 3 runner-up spots and if the Montel,
Jr. vs. Dandoy's match ended in a draw, the Sonnenborn Berger system of
tiebreak will be used to determine the final placing of Mahor,
Valenzuela and Alipoon.
Jose
Omega (6-5-2) lost his last 2 games to Mahor and Alipoon. He is in
extreme time pressure to play 2 games in more than an hour because of
job requirement. Everybody appreciates his generosity for donating
$100.00 to the champion of the next tournament in January 11, 2004 at
Paul Brothers Tri-M Gen. Merchandise and Food Retail in Malakal.
Dandoy
defeated Amante Caballero (4-5-4), who drew with Jess Toldoya (4-4-4)
without playing because of Caballero's job requirement. Mike Miguel, Jr.
lost to Ivan II Chess Computer in the other completed match.
Other
matches were defaults: tournament venue host and trophies sponsor Nilo
de Jesus (6-5-1) d. Norbert Villanueva. Defaults draws: Rolando Funa
(0-6-7) vs. Montel, Jr.; Francis Cuenco (2-9-1) vs. Ivan II (7-4-2) and
Funa vs. Eugene Koh (2-6-4).
In
the junior division, Jovani Adachi (2-12-4) showed up in the
penultimate round and plays as many games as he can. He lost twice to
eventual champion Charles Aquino (14-2-2), drew with Rodnnie Dizon
(9-7-2) and won by default over former champion Jayrome Soriano
(13-4-1).
In
other completed matches, 3rd runner-up Chris Domingo (13-5-0) defeated
John Page (5-13-0) who also lost to Ivan II (5-10-3). Default winners:
Domingo d. Dmitri Villanueva (1-13-4) and Dizon d. Villanueva.
Final
round pairings: (Awarding of trophies will follow after the completion
of all senior division games. Absent players will lose by default)
Montel, Jr. vs. Dandoy; Hernandez vs. Cuenco; de Jesus vs. Ramos; Koh
vs. Toldoya and Ramos vs. Miguel, Jr.
We
would like to thank Hirm Isechal, Maryann Flaga and Esteban for working
together to finish the artistic storyboard-type trophies on time and
for giving a bonus trophy for 4th runner-up (Dizon) in the junior
division.
