: 2 MONTHS IN PALAU, HOOKED ON CHESS ALREADY
Arnolfo Inres showed potential
in chess, not yet in strong play but keen interest to learn. He practiced with
Palau’s no. 8 Paquito Suringa, Jr. at Palau Royal Resort while waiting for
Roberto to drop him to his residence after borrowing chess books from him. He
might finish within the top 3 of the Unrated Chess tournament on July 12. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

THE 2015 Unrated Chess Tournament is supposed to be a
2-week event but due to lack of at least 10 participants, it is moved from July
05, 2015 to July 12. And instead of a 4-round Swiss system first week and
3-round 2nd week, it will now be a one-day 7-round event.
Roberto
Hernandez was able to convince Koichi Matsuda, who’s been an Honorary Member of
Palau Chess Federation since 2005. He paid his $2.00 registration fee and
practice with newcomer and 2nd to enlist Arnolfo Inres. Matsuda
always forget to press his time clock.
Roberto
made a sign that reads: “UNRATED CHESS TOURNAMENT TO START TODAY AND NEXT
SUNDAY, JULY 12 AT BETHLEHEM PARK. THERE ARE CASH PRIZES AND TROPHIES TO THE
TOP 3 FINISHERS. ONLY UNRATED PLAYERS CAN PARTICIPATE. REGISTRATION FEE IS
$2.00.”
He
asked the basketball game announcer/analyst Archie to announce about the
tournament and right away, a lady newcomer has enlisted and paid her $2.00
registration fee. Her name is Joan Gemota.
Next
to register is basketball coach/player Pons Mahor, who has long been encouraged
to join any event. He’s the brother of Manuel ‘Jun’ Mahor, Jr. and is now one
of the favorite to win this event.
BUT…
the I. N. C. chess tourney champ Allan Alcid also enlists next to him and he
become the heavy favorite to win this tournament as he has defeated strong
rated players in the just concluded tilt.
Johnny
Carandang is next to registers followed by Edward Artillaga at about 5pm and no
more chance to get it started. The organizers decided to have a 7-round one day
event on Sunday, July 12. There’s still time for some more unrated players to
try their savvy in playing against beginners also.
The
champion will get $20.00 cash and a trophy followed by $15.00, $10.00 plus
trophies to the 2nd and 3rd place respectively. Jeff
Balbalosa has printed at least 10 certificates for the participants. He will
also print some photos of Palau Chess Teams to 2014 World Chess Olympiad in
Tromso, Norway to have chess players be inspired to get serious with chess and
have a chance to represent Palau in many tournaments and places like Guam,
Australia, Mongolia, Malaysia, Azerbaijan, Georgia and Japan or Argentina.
Tito
Cabunagan and Cyril Montel, Jr. are planning to participate in Guam and
Malaysia (Tito) while the Sisior family (Angie, Harvey, Destiny, Angelil and
Kyarii) will represent Palau for the first time in 2015 World Youth U-16 Chess
Olympiad in Mongolia.
Next
year’s World Chess Olympiad will be held in Baku, Azerbaijan while the 2018 WCO
will be held in another former Soviet state of Georgia (Batumi). The 2020 World
Chess Olympiad will have 2 tough bidders in Tokyo, Japan and Buenos Aires,
Argentina.
Arnolfo
Inres is just 2 months here in Palau and he showed keen interest to improve his
game. He borrowed from Roberto 3 chess books (The Revolution in the 70’s by
Garry Kasparov, Chess Informant #20 and a book about Opening Ideas). Roberto
also gave him a copy of personalized “By the Book Chess Openings.
