 CELIZ, PARRADO, MAHOR & KSAU
     ARE 2013 PNCC CHAMPIONS

JOSE Celiz and Rustum Cabuso played their game last Friday at 9pm. This is the most crucial game for Celiz to clinch the 2013 Palau National Chess Championship title if he will beat Cabuso, one of the 2 remaining contenders for the plum.
Their game lasted till 11:30pm with Celiz prevailing with the white pieces. Roberto Hernandez immediately congratulated him for becoming the 7th National Master of Palau and in the process, will replace Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. as the number 1 chess player of Palau in the November 2013 edition of World Chess Federation (FIDE) ratings list.
The other contender for the crown, Candidate Master (CM) Bernardo Garcia, will play his last 2 games on the final day of the tournament- Oct. 06 against Rafael Paloma, with the hope of settling for 1st runner-up as Cabuso showed no interest to finish his last 2 remaining games –against Garcia and Nilo de Jesus, who needs to play 3 crucial games that will affect the standings of at least 3 players.
His game against Celiz will be recorded as +- and Celiz will just be an observer of the final day games. If Cabuso will not show up on Oct. 06, his game against Garcia will be recorded as +-.
Jeff Balbalosa will need a win over Paloma to overtake Cabuso and Hernandez at 4th place. The struggling Paquito Suringa, Jr. will have to play Dennis Gonzales and Nilo de Jesus in rapid time control because his available time on Sundays is only 1 hour.
Top seed Cyril and 2nd seed Roberto played their 11th round match at Bethlehem Park on Friday at 4”15 pm. It lasted till 6:45 and they move to a concrete table with lights from post. Cyril prevailed in 50 moves of Modern Defence and finished with 7-4 win-loss record while Hernandez settled for 6-5.
Their game was watched by many Palauans who are amazed seeing chess players playing with time clock and writing their moves. They waited patiently for Cyril to make a move and consumed 8 minutes.
Hours earlier, Cyril dealt Suringa his 7th loss in 41 moves of Queen’s Indian Defence in another special game (3) held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1. Suringa and Paloma are the only players who haven’t scored a single victory yet.
Gonzales also struggled but won over Tito, drew with Eugenio Pastrana and lost 7 likewise. Tito won 2 games, lost 5 and drew 4 games, 3 of those were declared draws to ease the schedules of Paloma, Suringa and Nilo de Jesus.
In the Reserves Division, Fernan John Velarde (1-2-2) will be having his day off on the final day and he needs to play against Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. (5-2-0), Sib Reyes 0-2-4), Glen Navarosa (1-6-2) and Jun Mahor (4-1-2). Rapid time format might be use to finish all his 4 games.
Current leaders Eugene Labarda (8-2-0) and Remrel Dizon (8-2-0) have both one remaining game – against Jaime dela Cruz (1-2-3) and Sib Reyes, respectively. If both of them will win their games, they will be co-champions with Jun Mahor still has a chance to make it a 3-way tie for the title if he will win his last 4 games – against Velarde, dela Cruz, Reyes and Mohammad Manik Hossain (6-3-0).
Pacenos still has a mathematical chance to make it a 4-way tie for the title if he will win all of his 4 remaining games—against Velarde, dela Cruz, Eric Ksau Whipps and Senator Mlib Tmetchul.
The important thing about the Reserves Division is that players must be present to get the default wins unlike in the Top 12, the un-played games will be recorded as +-.
In the Women’s Division, Angie Parrado is the champion with an unbeaten record of 10-0-1 followed by Baby Edna Mission (9-1-1), Gladys Anne Paloma (8-2-1), Joy Flores Whipps (4-6-1), Ma. Florida Hernandez (5-2-4), Elizabeth Manuel (1-4-6), Paz Ngiratechekii (2-6-3), Lilibeth Cabunagan (1-5-5), Visitacion Rave (1-5-5), Remelyn Pascual (1-6-4), Rowena Ngiralmau (1-6-4), Leizl Michael (1-6-4).
In the Junior Division, undefeated Destiny Sisior (8-0-0) will be the champion if she will win her last game against fellow unbeaten Ksau Anthony Whipps (5-0-1), who need to win against Destiny, her sister Angelil (3-2-2) and Geaury Ken Pastrana (1-1-4). Cyrelle Ann Montel (4-2-0) can catch up with Angelil in the battle for 3rd place if she will win her last 3 games – against Ronald Mission (1-3-3), Ken and Angelil, who need to win against Cyrelle and Ksau to nail the 3rd spot.
The youngest contestants Kyarii Sisior and Kate Celiz finished the event with 1-5-3 and 0-5-4 slates respectively while Dichem Tmetchul and Zachery Techall Whipps’ records are 1-3-5 and 1-4-4 respectively.
