FINAL ROUND PAIRINGS -- 2013 PNCC

IT'S DOWN to the wire finish for 3 contenders to the crown of 2013 Palau National Chess Championship – undefeated Jose Celiz, with an 8-0-1 win-loss-draw record, Rustum Cabuso (6-2-0) and CM Bernard Garcia (6-2-1).
After Celiz defeated Rafael Paloma (0-3-3) on Thursday, his chances is about 90% as Garcia can only tie him at 8.5 points even if Celiz loses his last 2 games—against Cabuso and Nilo de Jesus (2-3-2) and if Garcia wins over Cabuso and Paloma.
Cabuso’s maximum points will be 9 points if he will win all his 3 remaining games –against Celiz, Garcia and de Jesus. Even if Cabuso will win all those 3 games, he will be 1st runner-up if Celiz will win against de Jesus, who needs to play 4 games – against Eugenio Pastrana, Cabuso, Paquito Suringa, Jr. and Celiz.
The complication will arise if de Jesus could not play 2 of these 4 games especially against Celiz as it will be recorded as + - and will not be counted as point because it is un-played game.
First priority is Cabuso-de Jesus if Celiz will lose to Cabuso, who also needs to win vs. Garcia for this to happen. The de Jesus-Suringa, Jr. and Pastrana vs. Paloma matches might be set as rapid time format because Pax has only an hour break to play his last game on Sunday and Paloma needs to play 5 games in the final day.
The other important games are: Top seed Montel, Jr. vs. 2nd seed Roberto Hernandez (Black), Jeff Balbalosa (4-3-3) vs. Paloma; Dennis Gonzales (1-7-1) vs. Paquito (Black) and vs. Paloma (B); Eugenio Pastrana (4-4-1) vs. Paloma (W) and vs. de Jesus (B).
In the Reserves Division, Fernan John Velarde (1-2-2) will be having his day off on the final day and he needs to play against Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. (5-2-0), Sib Reyes 0-2-4), Glen Navarosa (1-6-2) and Jun Mahor (4-1-2). Rapid time format might be use to finish all his 4 games.
Current leaders Eugene Labarda (8-2-0) and Remrel Dizon (8-2-0) have both one remaining game – against Jaime dela Cruz (1-2-3) and Sib Reyes, respectively. If both of them will win their games, they will be co-champions with Jun Mahor still has a chance to make it a 3-way tie for the title if he will win his last 4 games – against Velarde, dela Cruz, Reyes and Mohammad Manik Hossain (6-3-0).
Pacenos still has a mathematical chance to make it a 4-way tie for the title if he will win all of his 4 remaining games—against Velarde, dela Cruz, Eric Ksau Whipps and Senator Mlib Tmetchul.
The important thing about the Reserves Division is that players must be present to get the default wins unlike in the Top 12, the un-played games will be recorded as +-.
In the Women’s Division, Angie Parrado is the champion with an unbeaten record of 10-0-1 followed by Baby Edna Mission (9-1-1), Gladys Anne Paloma (8-2-1), Joy Flores Whipps (4-6-1), Ma. Florida Hernandez (5-2-4), Elizabeth Manuel (1-4-6), Paz Ngiratechekii (2-6-3), Lilibeth Cabunagan (1-5-5), Visitacion Rave (1-5-5), Remelyn Pascual (1-6-4), Rowena Ngiralmau (1-6-4), Leizl Michael (1-6-4).
In the Junior Division, undefeated Destiny Sisior (8-0-0) will be the champion if she will win her last game against fellow unbeaten Ksau Anthony Whipps (5-0-1), who need to win against Destiny, her sister Angelil (3-2-2) and Geaury Ken Pastrana (1-1-4). Cyrelle Ann Montel (4-2-0) can catch up with Angelil in the battle for 3rd place if she will win her last 3 games – against Ronald Mission (1-3-3), Ken and Angelil, who need to win against Cyrelle and Ksau to nail the 3rd spot.
The youngest contestants Kyarii Sisior and Kate Celiz finished the event with 1-5-3 and 0-5-4 slates while Dichem Tmetchul and Zachery Techall Whipps’ records are 1-3-5 and 1-4-4 respectively.
ABSENT JUNIOR PLAYERS IN THE FINAL DAY WILL LOSE BY DEFAULT.

In a special game held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 on Oct. 04 (Friday), top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. clobbered PRR cafeteria cook Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. in 43 moves of Queen's Indian Defence.

Right after their game, the Montel-Hernandez match was set at 4:00 pm at Bethlehem Park at the same day after Hernandez is finished teaching piano the daughter of Senator Surangel Whipps, Jr. while CM Bernardo Garcia will play Rafael Paloma on Saturday, Oct. 05 at 2:00 pm at Bethlehem Park also before Hernandez teach the daughter of Senator Mlib Tmetchul piano and chess at 2-4pm.

The Paloma-Garcia match was reset on Sunday, Oct. 06. Garcia asked Cabuso if he is available on Sat. at 2pm. He will inform Hernandez and Garcia if he's available to play on Sat. at 2 pm.

The final game of Roberto and Cyril took place at Bethlehem Park at 4:15 pm. In the middle game, a lot of Palauans are watching their game. Roberto took a picture with them in the background and even offered a young boy if he would like to practice with the extra chess set on hand.

Cyril prevailed in 50 moves of Modern Defence after Roberto missed a drawing move on the 33rd move --Bd4+ so that Cyril's king will be stocked at the king side. Their game lasted till 6:30 pm and they moved to the place where there is light from the post.

Five hours later, Jose Celiz text Roberto informing him that he won over Rustum Cabuso in the 3rd special game of the day and thus clinching the title of new Palau National Master and 2013 PNCC champion. He will replaced Cyril as the number one chess player of Palau after the new FIDE ratings of 46 Palau chess players will be published on November 01, 2013.
