AFTER a very successful invitational chess championship, the next national tournament will be held on Independence Day, Oct. 01 at Jean's Boutique and Store premises.
Edwin Eti will sponsor $100.00 for cash prize of the top finishers. He informed the organizers that he will also participate in the tilt which will be a single or double round-robin format depending on the number of participants.
The format for rapid chess competition will be 25 or 30 minutes for each player to finish the game.
Touch move rules will be applied and illegal move will be replayed where the violation occured.
Writing chess notation during the game is optional. Players who write their moves will be at risk of losing some seconds or minutes by doing so.
Registration fee is $10.00. Interested participants can register to the chairman Roberto Hernandez at 488-3694/2997 or Gene Pastrana at 488-4640.
The last game of Menandro Manuel vs. Jess Toldoya was not played yet and the result of the final standings in the 2006 National Chess Championship is still hanging with Manuel trying to catch up with Manny Nedic for the championship if he will win his match against Toldoya.
The brilliancy prize of $100.00 and trophies for the top 6 finishers were donations from Manny Kimpo, who also sponsored the storyboard style champion's trophy of the 2006 Palau Invitational Chess Championship held from August 31-September 04 at Palau Royal Resort and Palasia Hotel.
Kimpo also treated the 1st runner-up winner Marlon Bernardino to a dinner at Teppan Dragon (Japanese Restaurant) where Hernandez is playing piano music every night.
During his treat, Australian Gary Bekker, the Oceania Zone President, also came by and socialize with other guests of the Japanese restaurant.
Kimpo was also generous enough to give Bernardino a little cash while the Knights and Rooks Chess Club donated $100.00 for Bernardino's allowance and for promoting chess in Palau through his column in Philippine newspaper, radio sports program and television appearance of Mr. Bekker.
If there will be no winner of brilliancy prize of the NCC, Hernandez will suggest to the board of KRCC to use that amount for cash prize also of the next rapid chess tournament to give more for the top finishers.
Meanwhile, the trophies for the NCC is not yet finish and Kimpo agreed to have the same storyboard style trophies to be made by the same Palauan woodcarver in Airai to do a smaller verson of the trophy.
Bekker and Bernardino suggested to hold another National Championship to be held next year under the World Chess Federation (FIDE) approval now that the top 6 players of Palau have international rankings.
The $100.00 fee to FIDE will be waived if the National Championship will be held under its approval.
