(441) MANUEL LOSES, KEEPS LEAD (TBN-Oct. 13-20, 2006)

PALAU'S first National Master Manny Nedic dealt first round leader Menandro 'Boy' Manuel his first losst of the 2006 Rapid Chess Tournament held Sunday, October 08 at Jean's Boutique and Store.

Manuel made a dubious king move that enable Nedic to weave a mating net in the next few moves.

He later defeated Flavin 'Matlab' Andres to keep the lead with a 3-1-1 win-loss-draw record of the double round-robin tournament.

In the first game of the day, 2nd seed Jose Omega nipped 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. wherein the latter blundered away his queen due to extreme time pressure.

With only a minute left in his clock, he was able to nearly equalize in the endgame but succumbed to Omega's material advantage.

Andres, who was instrumental in the success of 2006 Palau Invitational Chess Championship, lost his 2nd game of the day to Joel Azana.

Montel, Jr. evened up his score with Azana, who played already 6 games (2-4-0). He lost also to Nedic later in the afternoon.

Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich showed up but some players arrived late and he was not able to play a single game.

He paid his registration fee and will play as many games as he can next week to catch up.

Anselmo Idol also showed up and said he will also play next week while there is no news about the other newcomer Rey Lapuz.

Fourth seed Roberto Hernandez was not able to play a single game because his day off now is Monday and might play against anybody who is available on Monday nights at the same venue. He split his first 2 games last week.

After the completion of regular games, a blitz chess tourney was held between Montel, Jr., Azana, Nedic, Manuel and Pastrana.

After playing only 3 games in the double round-robin event, Nedic needed to go home and his remaining games were all default losses and Manuel bagged another blitz title.

The tournament is still open to those who would like to catch up but they must play at least 2 games every Sunday.

For more details, please contact Roberto Hernandez at tel. 488-3694/2997 or Gene Pastrana at 488-4640.
