He informed the tournament organizers through Cyril Montel, Jr. that he will not finish his last 6 remaining games.
Those default losses favored 6th seed Manny Nedic, with a 14-2-2 win-loss-draw record, to retain the leadership in the ongoing National Chess Championship held Sunday, August 06 at Jean's Boutique and Store premises.
Pinoy Express Remittance sponsored the trophies and $100.00 brilliancy prize through its manager, Manny Kimpo.
Gonzales lost his 6 remaining games to Nedic, Montel, Jr. (13-2-3), 2nd seed Jose Omega (10-7-0), Morton Sawaichi (6-10-0), Jess Toldoya (10-3-2) and Francis 'Sno' Temaungil (5-11-0). He finished the tournament with a final record of 6-16-0.
In the only 2 completed games of the 16th round of NCC, Toldoya nipped Gene Pastrana (5-12-1) in 37 moves of Sicilian Defence (Alapin Variation) while 4th seed Roberto Hernandez dealt Montel, Jr. his 2nd loss of the tourney in 75 moves of Danish Gambit.
Hernandez missed the Rac1 move on the 13th to dominate the game and allowed Montel, Jr. to seize the initiative after the exchange of queens.
Another in-between move was missed by Hernandez on the 38th and stayed on the defensive until Montel, Jr. committed a blunder on the 64th move.
A tricky knight sacrifice was offered by Montel, Jr. to win the game but Hernandez found the right sequences of checks to seal the victory.
An email from Bong Alipoon was received by Hernandez informing his willingness to go back to Palau and finish his contract with the government.
He is now in the United States and met some people who also been to Palau like Nilo de Jesus, the venue host and trophies sponsor of 2003 Senior and Junior Open Chess tournament held in his C & N Refrigeration and Aircon Services.
He also met August Hubaldo and Romy Coritico, a former co-employee of Hernandez at Image Restaurant.
There are some chess clubs in Alipoon's place but it is far away from his residence and me missed competitive chess.
Alipoon responded to a forwarded email of Hernandez from Kaarlo Schepel who is sending 20 chess clocks and 4 chessboards and pieces for Palau Chess Federation and was addressed to Philippine Ambassador Ramoncito Marino, who sponsored the $1,000.00 cash prizes in the inaugural Ambassador Marino Cup Rapid Chess tournament held on June 25, July 02 and July 09 at the Embassy of the Philippines.
Because of high cost of parcel by air, the remaining 96 chessboards and pieces (50 kilos) will be sent by ship through Bombay/Mumbai, India.
The donated chess materials are from CACDEC, the FIDE (World Chess Federation) agency that provides assistance to developing chess countries.
This Sunday's matches will feature Nedic and Toldoya, who haven't played their 2 games.
Other matches will feature the present players.
