POSSIBLE ENCOUNTER AT WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD
Joselito Marcos, left, Papua New Guinea's top chess player, posed with Palau sole representative in the Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Australia last year, Roberto Hernandez. The two might meet in the Khanty-Mansiysk World Chess Olympiad in Russia from Sept. 19- Oct. 4, 2010. PALAU CHESS TEAM CAPTAIN
IS JAMIE KENMURE
THE PALAU Chess Federation Board held a meeting on April 28, 2010 at Migrant Center for Workers to decide who will be the team captain of Palau Chess Team to World Chess Olympiad in Russia.
The 3 candidates are Woman International Master (WIM) Cristine Rose Mariano, Jamie Kenmure --the Honoree Chess Development Officer of Oceania, and PCF chairman Francis 'Sno' Temaungil.
The first 2 candidates will have to shoulder their own airfare but the accommodation is free courtesy of Russian Chess Federation.
In Sno's case, a total of $1,900.00 has to be raised for his airfare and payment of PCF late annual report for the year 2007, 2008 and 2009.
WIM Mariano conceded the slot in favor of Sno so that there will be at least one Palauan to the team. The amount to be raised is unrealistic to achieve and the Team Captain position was awarded to Jamie Kenmure, who has just been appointed by World Chess Federation (FIDE) as the Ratings Officer of Palau.
And as being so, he was requested to submit crosstable of 2009 Palau National Chess Championship to FIDE so that it will be rated and with some corrections with the names: 1. Gene Pastrana --Eugenio Pastrana 2. Cyril Montel -- Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. 3. Bernard Garcia -- Bernardo Garcia
One of the reasons in chossing Jamie is that has an up-to-date chess data base. Instead of buying the software Chess Base 10 from Cristine's friend Franz Bisson, he was asked to download it to Bernard's email address.
The 5 other members of Palau Chess Team are Roberto Hernandez (Board 1), Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. (Board 2), Bernardo Garcia (Board 3), Tito Cabunagan (Board 4) and Reserve Eugenio Pastrana.
All members, except Hernandez, have their own laptop computers. Hernandez is planning to buy one as the promised laptop from Oceania Zone President Gary Bekker is still in the process of negotiation.
The composition of the team became possible because of an offer to shoulder the 5 airfares from Palau-Manila-Dubai, where free charters will be given by host country.
The ongoing World Chess Championship Match between India's Viswanathan Anand, the defending champion, and Bulgaria's Veselin Topalov, is being commentated by English Grandmaster Nigel Short. It is being held in Sofia, Bulgaria.
The PCF also received the amended invitation from the Organizing Committee. Instead of 2 single rooms and 2 double rooms, it is now all double rooms except if there is an odd number in the team composition of 6 members for each country (5 players + team captain).
Also the other amendment is the extra return charter flights to Moscow.
*Note: Jamie Kenmure stays as Team Captain of Palau Chess Team to 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey from August 27-September 10, 2012. The other members are Roberto Hernandez (Board 1), Tito Cabunagan (Board 2), Bernardo Garcia (Board 3), Menandro Manuel (Board 4) and Mohammad Manik Hossain as Reserve. Mr Jan Berglund stays as Delegate and Menandro's wife Elizabeth will be the Head of Delegation.
