(187) CHESSMATE 59 SPLIT SECOND WIN!

THE LAST game of the 9th round of the 2005 Regular Chess tournament was decided by a mere split of a second last Sunday, at Image Restaurant, the temporary venue.

Tutii Joe Chilton didn't make it in the afternoon schedule as he arrives 30 minutes after all the players have left.
He had a dinner at Image Restaurant with wife Baklai and 2 kids, Tino and Tiare Holm, Leah Asanuma and daughter Freja, Encely Ngiraiwet and grandson Edson, Frida Loftis, Annabelle Lyman and daughter Maria, a couple and another guy (Tiger Mangham).
Roberto Hernandez played some piano music for them and after Chilton finished his meal, Hernandez offered him to play an official game using the rapid chess format to accomodate their available time.
With 30 minutes each to finish the game, both players were able to annotate their game.
On the 23rd move, Chilton captured Hernandez' knight depriving him of the chance to castle to safety as Chilton combined forces of queen and 2 rooks to expose Hernandez' king TO THE OTHER END OF THE BOARD!

With seconds remaining in Chilton's clock, he unleashed a mate in 2 moves but when he moved the rook for the checkmate, the flag in his clock fell, and technically, he lost by time forfeit.
If he had at least one second remaining in his clock, he should have won his first-ever victory over a top seed player as he had a queen, a rook and 3 pawns to Hernandez' 2 rooks and 3 pawns.
