HOW IT STARTED
Jamie Kenmure, 3rd from left, wished to be part of Palau Chess team with Roberto Hernandez, left, during the 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Australia. The plan has pushed through with him being the team captain of Palau Chess Team to Russia Olympiad and this 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey. Others in the picture are (L-R) Hilton Bennett, Michael Steadman, Paul Spiller and Rupert Jones. (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)
FIDE OFFERS PALAU, FIJI A
GM TEAM CAPTAIN
Shaun Press, the Secretary of
Papua New Guinea Chess Federation, wrote an email to Roberto Hernandez,
Secretary/Treasurer of Palau Chess Federation and to Dr. Virgilio de Asa,
President of Fiji Chess Federation. The short email states:
To Fiji Chess Federation, Palau Chess Federation GM David Arutinian is offering his services as a Team Captain/Trainer for the 2012 Chess Olympiad. The FIDE Trainers Commission and the FIDE Development Commission will provide funding for his services, for developing countries.
The Papua New Guinea Chess Federation has just appointed GM Dejan Bojkov as the PNG Team Captain under this scheme. We offered a single room, return air ticket from his home country (Bulgaria in this case) and 1200 euros, on the recommendation of the Trainers Commission.
GM Arutinian has indicated that he would be happy with similar conditions. If you are interested in following up this proposal with GM Arutinian, I can put you in touch with him.
Shaun Press, Secretary-PNGCF
Hernandez forwarded this email to the members of Palau Chess Team to 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey namely –Menandro Manuel, Tito Cabunagan, Bernard Garcia, Team Captain Jamie Kenmure and Delegate Mr. Jan Berglund to get their comments. So far, only Bernard has responded with this:
Hi Robert, What is 1200 euros, on the recommendation of the Trainers Commission? I heard we already have team captain. Is it good for us to stick with the current team captain or it’s too late for GM David Arutinian to be considered? Is our team captain also our trainer like GM David? How come I don’t see any email or any correspondence from the team captain? Thank you. Bernard
ALL OF BERNARD’S QUESTIONS ARE GOOD QUESTIONS! His last question had awakened Hernandez of something that Palau’s team captain has failed to do—Having communications with the members and not only to him, who always forwarded to them their Facebook chats.
Now, Jamie started to do his job and emailed all the members the following:
To the Palau Olympiad Team, as your team captain, I have been looking at the team line up’s of the team’s that are participating in the event. There are some fairly strong teams and then there is some team’s that we can do very well against as well.
The line-up I propose so we can get the most benefit for titles of any sought is this: 1. Roberto Hernandez 2. Bernardo Garcia 3. Tito Cabunagan 4. Menandro Manuel 5. Mohammad Manik Hossain
In preparation for the tournament and I understand that most of you have a fairly busy work schedule, if you can try and fit in one game of chess at a long time control a day if not a week. This will be very good and strong practice for yourselves. I’m researching all teams at the moment that have registered for the event. Looking for games and how other teams are lining up.
If you have any thoughts and suggestions, please don’t hesitate to email me at all. Yours, Jamie Kenmure.
