champion Magnus Carlsen of Norway in the final round of Baku Olympiad. Norway
finished a surprising 5th place.
QUALIFYING TILT BEFORE
2016 PNCC
IT IS agreed during the Palau Chess Federation Board
Meeting on Sept. 21, 2016 that a qualifying tourney for reserves will be held
on Oct. 02 at Bethlehem Park to determine the No. 8, 9, and 10 that will
compete in the Top 10 Division of 2016 Palau National Chess Championship. This
is after the new FIDE rating of Palau top 7 players is published on Oct. 01.
The 7-round tilt will have a time control of 1 hour with 30 seconds increment
starting from move 1.
The
calculated new FIDE ratings of Top 10 Palau players will be 1. Cyril Tomas
Montel, Jr. (1845) 2. Tito Cabunagan (1779) 3. Roberto Hernandez (1782) 4. Jeff
Balbalosa (1749) 5. Allan Alcid (1684) 6. Paquito Suringa, Jr. (1680) 7.
Angelica Parrado (1655) 8. Angelo Salvadora (1643) 9. Dennis Gonzales (1629)
and 10. Nilo de Jesus (1591).
This
means that Dennis needs to participate in the qualifying tourney to be able to
have a chance to join the team in 2018 Olympiad. Even if Angie will be taken
out of the No. 7 list, still Salvadora is 14 rating points ahead of him. There
is a separate Women’s Division in the 2016 PNCC.
The
2016 PNCC then will commence on Nov. 20, 2016 to Jan. 15, 2017. There will be
Reserves, Women and Junior Divisions in this event.
The
upcoming international chess tournaments are tackled like the 2018 World Chess
Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, the Small Nations Online Tournaments which is not
possible because of slow internet connection in Palau. The Correspondence Chess
is suggested.
The Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in
Auckland, New Zealand will be held from Jan. 14-20, 2017. Tito Cabunagan and
Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. are available and interested. Seeded players to receive
free entry and room-share accommodation as follows in each of the Open and
Women’s championship…Australia (2), NZ (1), Fiji (1), Solomon Islands (1),
Palau (1), Guam (1), PNG (1), Nauru (1).
It is suggested to have 2 male reps of Palau
rather than one male and a woman as done in 2011 OZCC in which Roberto Hernandez
and Mohammad Manik Hossain are allowed to go with $300.00 each as travel fund
after Tito withdrawn.
For
the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia, the qualification to the team
and the requirements are 1. He must be an official member of PCF. 2. He must be
active and have paid the yearly dues until 2018. 3. He must finish the National
Championship in the Top 10 Category. 4. 2016 National Champion will
automatically qualified to the team.
The
criteria for selecting players to the Olympiad are: a.) Priority to active
member b.) Priority to resident of Palau. To choose somebody inactive if all
other options are exhausted. c.) By rating or performance; 60-40 suggestion by
Tito is tackled. Cyril is for results. d.) Availability to travel and financial
status. The exception is if there is no suitable player, Menandro Manuel or
Jose Celiz can go if they have the time and resources.
Criteria
for Team Composition
a.
2016 PNCC Champion in the Top 10 Division automatically qualifies.
b.
If the 2017 PNCC champion is the same player, the 2nd placer
qualifies.
c.
Prior to 2018 WCO, there will be a standard time control tournament as
preparation for team.
d.
The team will decide who will be the Team Captain with Board approval.
e.
Team Captain must have an Instructor Title (FI, NI, DI).
f.
Will find out if Fiji’s request to FIDE to have a GM Team Captain in Baku is
being paid by FIDE.
f.
Aside from the champion, the next 4 players who finish the 2017 PNCC qualify to
the team.
g. In a preceding year, the FIDE rating
is also considered as the last criteria.
The PCF’s
election of new officers will be held in February 2017 and will discuss the
probable inclusion of a woman board member.
