LAST 2 SUNDAYS OF 2014
PALAU OPEN CHESS TILT
JAMIE Kenmure of Australia became the Rating Officer of
Palau Chess Federation in 2010. He then applied to be the team captain of Palau
Chess Team to 2010 Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia World Chess Olympiad and retained
both of his positions in 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.
Upon
the suggestion of Mr. Geoffrey Borg, he will skip the team captain position for
2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway so that all 13 members of Team
Palau are all from Palau.
Tito
Cabunagan will be the team captain of Men/Open team. He withdrew because there
will be Pacific Island Forum on the same date as the Olympiad (Aug. 01-14,
2014). Fourteen island nations will be represented in this event.
Tito also withdrew from being a
member of 2012 Palau Chess Team to Istanbul because a group of people came from
Japan to check the donated 2 generators and he is the only technical person
that can guide their inspections.
During
the PCF elections of new officers in Dec. 2012, Jamie insisted that he has to
be in the Executive Board, where he was elected and won by a single vote over
Jeff Balbalosa and Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr.
When
Roberto Hernandez, General Secretary of PCF, submitted to FIDE the list of elected
officers of PCF, Jamie was not included in the list of Executive Board but only
as Rating Officer.
On
May 07, 2014, another Board Meeting was held at Whipps residence and Jeff was
unanimously voted as the newest member of the Board attended by Tito, Eric Ksau
Whipps, Cyril, Dennis, Roberto, Bernard and Jeff. Some of the issues tackled
are the 2014 Palau Open Chess Tournament; the rooms assignment of players;
opening a bank account for PCF so that monetary donations from FIDE will be
remitted to that account; having a single round-robin tournament for
Olympiad-bound players using the Olympiad time control (90 minutes to make 40
moves + another 30 minutes to finish the game with 30 seconds increment
starting from move 1; and how to get Schengen visa – in which the applicant
must show in person for interview and finger printing. This means that all
members of the team must go on July 15 (Tuesday) to Manila to get the visa,
which will be released in 3-5 days. After a short stay, they will fly to Norway
on July 30 or 31.
Jamie
informed Eric that the 2014 Palau Open must be finished at least before May 23,
2014 to conform to a rule that a tournament must be finished in 90 days to have
it be rated.
With
this new development, Hernandez informed the players to play the crucial games
within 2 weeks. Cyril, Bernard and Rafael are the players who have to play 5
games; Jose Celiz and Dennis -4 games each; Alfredo Pacenos, Jr., Gladys Anne
Paloma, John Joseph Pabiona and Angie Parrado -3 games each; Roberto, Pax and
Baby Edna Mission –2 games each; and Tito, Jeff and Neph Macasaet – 1 game
each.
The
2 crucial games of Roberto is against Bernard (May 11) and against Cyril (May
18); Cyril vs. Bernard; Jose Celiz vs. Tito; Jeff vs. Pax; and Cyril vs. Dennis
are some of the most crucial games as they have chances for the championship’s
top 4 finishers.
Some
games that might be ‘spoilers’ are Cyril against husband and wife Rafael and
Gladys; Bernard vs. Alfredo and husband and wife; Jose vs. the 2 women –Angie and
Bheng and JJ Pabiona; and Pax vs. Angie.
If
there’s not enough time to finish the event in 90 min. time control, rapid time
control will be implemented or drawn games will be agreed but it will not
benefit some contenders who are aiming for whole points. All unrated participants will have their
initial FIDE rating in June 2014 FIDE Rating List. They are Arnold Undecimo,
Joey Balute, Charley Patris, Jose Senase Rodriguez, Peter Erick Magbanua and
Neph Macasaet.
RESULTS
OF PENULTIMATE ROUND (May 11, 2014)
Hernandez beat Garcia in 47 moves of English Opening;
Cyril clobbered Dennis in 41 moves of Queen’s Gambit Declined; Pax sacrificed a
knight for 2 pawns to defeat WNM Angelica Parrado in 39 moves of Sicilian
Defence; Cyril got another win by subduing Gladys in 44 moves of French Defence
and the longest game of the event –Dennis and Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. drew in more
than 130 moves in a game that lasted till 7:00 pm.
