Palau top chess player in the last 5 years Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., left, lost likewise in the first round against Tito Cabunagan in 41 moves of Queen's Gambit Declined. After the drawing of numbers (for 6 players), Cyril's first opponent is supposed to be against Jeffrey Balbalosa, middle, but the latter refused to play the top seed in the first round thereby this match. Candidate Master Bernardo Garcia, left, was
checkmated by NM and Palau top player Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., 2nd from left,
on the 10th move when Garcia falls to a trap after early exchange of queens. He
lost also to Roberto Hernandez, right, who topped the event. Dennis Gonzales,
2nd from right, tied Garcia at 7th overall finish while Cyril is alone at 3rd
place.

2014 PALAU OLYMPIANS AND
RAPID TILT START JUNE 1
THE 10-member Palau Chess Team to 2014 World Chess
Olympiad in Tromso, Norway will have tune-up games every Sunday at Bethlehem
Park starting June 1. The Olympiad time control will be used to familiarize the
members with this time control of 90 min. to make 40 moves and another 30
minutes to finish the game with 30 seconds increment starting from move 1.
The
Men/Open players are NM Roberto Hernandez, NM Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., CM
Bernardo Garcia, Dennis Gonzales, Jeffrey Balbalosa and Tito Cabunagan, who
withdrew as team captain because there is Pacific Islands Forum that coincides
with the date of the Olympiad.
In
the Women team, WNM Angelica Parrado, Baby Edna Mission, Gladys Anne Paloma,
Destiny Sisior and Joy Flores Whipps will have their own single round-robin
event.
Parallel
to this event, the 2014 Palau Rapid Chess tournament will be composed of
non-members of Palau team – 1. Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. 2. Peter Erick Magbanua 3.
Neph Macasaet 4. Eugene Labarda 5. John Joseph Pabiona 6. Nilo de Jesus 7.
Paquito Suringa, Jr. 8. Felix Olay 9. Jose Celiz 10. Arnold Undecimo 11. Rafael
Paloma and 12. Chris Kitalong
The
drawing of the number of the players in Men/Open section will be drawn at 2:00
on Sunday, June 1 before the start of the games to determine the color that the
players will be having.
