(398) UNBEATEN NO MORE (TBN-Nov.18-25, 2005)

NEWCOMERS John Pastrana and Francis 'Sno' Temaungil started to reaarange the chess pieces to start their 2nd game.

Sno lost the 1st in heartbreaking fashion as he was ahead in material. He lost the 2nd game as well but won his first 2 matches against newcomer Flavin Andres.

Four of the 5 unbeaten players suffered their first losses in the 3rd round of the 2005 Rapid Chess Tournament held Sunday, November 13, 2005 at Jean's Boutique and sponsored by Helena Yoichi and Manager Gene Pastrana.

Joel Azana (7-1-2) scored 7 straight before bowing to Pastrana (7-3-0). The Daewoo employee drew both of his other games to Cyril Montel, Jr. (3-2-2) and Gerry Sermeno (5-5-1).

Manny Nedic (6-2-0) was trounced by defending champion Jose Omega (2-1-0) in a double-edge game due to lack of time left for either player.

Nedic bounced back from his first loss and defeated 2 previously unbeaten players.

In more than 50 moves of Sicilian Defence, Nedic put down Montel, Jr. and Roberto Hernandez (5-1-0).

Earlier, Hernandez took the measure of Flavin Andres (3-19-0) in 30 moves of Sicilian-Sozin.

Andres lost 2 more at the hands of Sermeno and Felix Lapitan (9-4-0), but swept the younger Pastrana (2-2-0) to collect his 3rd victory overall.

Jess Gomez (4-1-1) climbed from 15th place to 8th spot in the standings after impressive wins against Montel, Jr. and Lapitan.

Sermeno had an even day as he lost one to Montel, Jr., won one over Andres and battled for a draw against Azana.

Lapitan is now in 2nd place after dealing Nedic his 2nd loss and he defeated Andres for a perfect day.

There are 8 participants in the first blitz chess fest held under the new venue. The format is a single round-robin and only 5 minutes for each player to finish the game.

The usual 10 minutes is not possible if Hernandez plans to be at work on time.

Nedic notched his first blitz chess title after demolishing the opposition and finished the tournament with one loss -- to Alipoon.

Andres followed in the footsteps of most of the newcomers to the high-speed of the blitz chess tournament and lost all of his matches.

Nedic graciously spent half of the prize money on drinks for the participants following his championship title.

STANDINGS: 1. Nedic (6-1-0) 2. Manuel (5-2-1) 3. Alipoon (4-2-1-) 4. Hernandez (4-3-0) 5. Pastrana (2-3-2) 6. Montel, Jr. (3-4-0) 7. Valenzuela (2-4-1) and 8. Andres (0-7-0).

Before the one day blitz tournament, the members of Knights and Rooks Chess Club held a special election.

They wanted to make it easier to Hernandez who is doing all the work.

Hernandez retained his chairmanship and Toldoya was elected as auditor. Gene Pastrana is now the secretary/treasurer.

The vice chairman position was abolished and Valenzuela was made a board member.

Andres was elected Publish Relations Officer (PRO) with a unanimous vote from the club members.

With his new appointment, he plans to start the first chess club at Palau High School, which will also be under the Palau Chess Federation.

The chairman of the PCF is planning to write a letter to the Palau National Olympic Committee for PCF application.
