On March 11, 2013 it’s the 30thcivil wedding anniversary of Roberto Hernandez and Ma. Florida M. Hernandez. It was held in the municipality of Makati City by Judge Facundo, who had some memorable comments during the reception such as—“Too much of everything is bad. Like me, too much ugly!”

During those 30 years, they’ve been away from each other from January 1987-April 1989 when Roberto accepted a job in Bahrain to be the resident musician of Khayam Taverna (Greek Restaurant) with Cypriot bouzuki player Antonis Sergio.

They’ve been away from each other again when Roberto accepted another job as band member of Tropical Depression Band in Palau from Feb. 04, 1992 with blind Palauan singer Elena Sutton. After 6 months, the band was disbanded and Roberto and lead guitarist Wilson Prima applied to Image Restaurant’s owner/manager Margarita Borja Dalton, who shouted during their audition, “You’re hired, boys!”, after they were able to play all of her requested songs.

Some notable facts: After the disbandment of Tropical Depression Band, Roberto now works with Typhoon Margie! She treated Roberto like a family member that’s why he’s been with Image Restaurant for 13 years until it has closed down in 2005.

Roberto was able to get his wife Flor and only daughter 10-year-old Karen in June 17, 1995, to be with him until Karen graduated high school at Mindzenty in May 28, 2004.

Roberto and Flor worked with Margie till 2005; with George Kebekol at Rose Garden Resort for 11 months; with Yuriko Irikedamoto of Dragon Tei for another 11 months for Roberto until his transfer to Palau Royal Resort in June 01, 2007. Flor still works at Dragon Tei till today.

When Roberto took his first paid vacation from June 18-July 04, 2009, he spent 11 days in Australia to represent Palau in 2009 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship. Flor stayed in Philippines for 17 days until their return to Palau.

When Roberto and Tito Cabunagan represented Palau in 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, Flor stayed in Palau this time and also during the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.

But they’ve been together again in Roberto’s 2nd paid vacation in Sept. 27-Oct. 19, 2011 in Philippines where they experienced evacuating in a military truck because of flooding. They were able also to attend the 18thbirthday celebration of Philippines top Grandmaster Wesley So at Shakey’s (Tomas Morato in Quezon City).

Their church wedding was held in September 25, 1983 and Karen was born less than 2 years after that, on May 18, 1985. Karen has a baby now—Zachery Hernandez-Gregorio, who was born in Feb. 12, 2011.

RESULTS OF THE 2ND WEEK OF 2013 RAPID CHESS TOURNAMENT:

Newly elected President of Palau Chess Federation Eric Ksau Whipps played his first 2 games of the event and lost both to Mohammad Manik Hossain and venue host Tito Cabunagan, who is leading the Group B with 4 straight wins followed by Hossain with 3 wins, a loss and a draw against Palau’s top player Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr.

In Group A, Roberto Hernandez took advantage of Miguel Hilario, Jr.’s unfamiliarity with Dutch Defence and prevailed in less than 30 moves. Paquito Suringa, Jr. played his first game against Jeff Balbalosa and won but lost to newcomer Rafael Paloma, whose wife Gladys will join the ever-growing women’s group.

In the women’s group, Angie Parrado and her 3 daughters arrived at the tournament site but she, Angelil and Destiny Sisior didn’t play a single game. Instead, Paz Ngiratechekii played her 3rd game and lost to Joy Flores Whipps by time forfeit because she always forgets to press her chess clock. Jeff called the attention of Chief Arbiter Hernandez that Paz clock has expired.

Montel, Jr.’s 10-year-old daughter Cyrelle Ann played her first game against Ksau Anthony Whipps and she prevailed over Ksau when he lost his queen in the middle game. He lost also his rook when it was skewered by Cyrelle Ann’s queen. When she promoted another pawn for her 2nd queen, Ksau thought that he was stalemated but Roberto showed him a dark square where his king can go.

Cyrelle Ann scored another convincing victory over Angelil to lead the juniors with 2 straight wins.

In the 3rd week of the event, Glen Navarosa of Group A lost 3 more games to Jeff Balbalosa, Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. and newcomer Rafael Paloma, who came to the tournament site with his wife Gladys and 2 sons.

Angie Parrado arrived without her 3 daughters and played a game vs. co-host Lilibeth Cabunagan. After prevailing easily, she played 2 official games with Gladys and lost both! IS THIS A CHANGING OF THE GUARDS OF PALAU WOMEN’S CHESS? It’s still early to say…Palau’s chess aficionados are watching.

Hernandez tied Tito Cabunagan with identical 4-0 win-loss slate after subduing Balbalosa and Paloma.

RESULTS OF 4TH WEEK: Dennis Gonzales played his first game after his wife gave birth 2 weeks ago. He almost upset Tito Cabunagan had he promoted his a pawn. Although Tito will promote his d pawn first, Dennis promotion will have the upperhand as Tito's king is under check.
Cyril and his daughter Cyrelle Ann arrived from basketball game. Cyril easily dispatch Remrel Dizon and went back to the basketball game. Roberto Hernandez teach some chess basics/fundamentals to Cyrelle Ann.
Angie came and practice with Baby Edna Mission before playing their 2 official games. Angie prevailed in both games to avenged his 2 earlier losses to Gladys Paloma last week.
There is a suggestion from Tito and Cyril to hold the remaining rounds at Betlehem Park just across the Palau National Gymnasium where basketball game were held every Sunday. This will enable many players like Nilo de Jesus, James dela Cruz, Manuel Mahor, Jr and others to play rapid/blitz chess while their team is not playing. The officers of Palau Chess Federation will ask its new President Eric Ksau Whipps if they can use the place.

Solution to last week’s puzzle: 1. Bf7+ Rxf7 2. Qg6+ Kf8 3. Qxf7 mate. If 2. … Rg7, then 3. Qxg7 mate.

This week’s puzzle: White to move and mates in 3 (Solution next issue)

***THIS ARTICLE WAS NOT PUBLISHED AGAIN IN TIA BELAU ISSUE 22 BECAUSE THE LAY-OUT ARTIST (JOEL) IS IN YAP FOR EXIT AND WILL BE BACK TO PALAU ON SUNDAY (MARCH 24).
