(397) SNO SWEEPS IVAN II

James dela Cruz, left, will leave Palau on Nov. 30 and will miss the rest of his games in the ongoing 2005 Rapid Chess Tournament. He scored 4 wins and 12 losses. Two of his victories were over newcomer Flavin Andres, right, the energetic PRO of Knights and Rooks Chess Club. Currently at 2nd place is Felix Lapitan, 2nd from right, who is practicing with former champion Jess Toldoya.

NEWLY ELECTED Palau Chess Federation (PCF) Francis 'Sno' Temaungil demolished Ivan II Chess Computer with both the white and black pieces in the 5th week of the 2005 Rapid Chess Tournament held Sunday, November 20 and sponsored by Helena Yoichi and Gene Pastrana of Jean's Boutique.
After losing to top seed Jose Omega and Pastrana earlier, Temaungil set up a match with the machine using only the computer's 8"x 8" board.
He whipped Ivan II in the first game in 42 moves and a shorter 32 moves in the second game of both Four Knights Defence.
More than a month before the opening of 2005 Rapid Chess Tournament, Sno borrowed Ivan II for more than 2 weeks to prepare for his first-ever serious chess competition.
He lost again in his last game of the day to solo leader Menandro Manuel, who is now 4.5 points ahead of his nearest rival.
However, he suffered his first defeat when he blundered away his queen against Manny Nedic.
In the second game of the day, Omega was unaware that the 3-move repetition of moves is a draw.
His game with Felix Lapitan was stopped and was declared a draw after former champion Jess Toldoya had the chairman reviewed their game.
OTHER RESULTS:
Manuel dealt Roberto Hernandez his 2nd loss in their Modern Defence game; Lapitan nipped Pastrana; Manuel notched 2 more wins over James dela Cruz and Ivan II Chess Computer using his pet Queen's Gambit Declined; Pastrana dislodged idle Joel Azana at 3rd spot with a win over dela Cruz; Cyril Montel, Jr. swept dela Cruz and dealt Flavin his 20th loss and moved 4 steps higher in the standings.
The younger John Pastrana bowed to dela Cruz and Hernandez in 44 moves of Sicilian Defence.
Another person offered to host the next tournament. His name is William Blasquino, one of the first player to register in the first-ever tournament in Palau but unable to participate.
He practiced some blitz games with Omega and will join the 7 other newcomers on Sunday.
Pinoy Express Remittance Manager Manny Kimpo also offered to sponsor the next tournament but their office is not big enough to hold a chess event.
He might co-sponsored with Blasquino and the venue for the next Palau National Chess Championship might be PCC Cafeteria.
Newly elected Knights and Rooks Chess Club PRO Andres has already signed up 58 kids of varying ages to join the Palau Youth Chess Club. He did a lot in just a week.
Solution to last week's puzzle:
(The first puzzle is Black to play and mates in 3 and the second puzzle is also black to play and mates in 3 and not white to play and mates in 2)
1. ... Qxh2+!! 2. Kxh2 Ng3+! 3. Kxg3 f4 mate. If 3. ... Kg1 then Rh1 mate.
