RUSSIA HERE WE COME
THE 39TH WORLD Chess Olympiad will be held in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia on September 19 (arrival) to October 04, 2010 (departure).
The 81st Congress of the World Chess Federation will also be held together with the election of FIDE president, being held every 4 years while Congress is done annually.
A total of 170 countries are participating in the event including Palau. The members are now in the process of obtaining their Russian visas and arranging travel itineraries (Koror-Manila, Manila Dubai).
The Dubai-Khanty-Mansiysk are free for 5 players and one team captain courtesy of Russian Chess Federation. Full accomodation is provided to the 6 members while Delegates have full accomodation also but has to pay their airfares.
The 5 players from Palau are Board 1 Roberto Hernandez, musician at Palau Royal Resort and the Secretary/Treasurer of Palau Chess Federation; Board 2 Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., gardener at Palau Pacific Resort and the current national champion; Board 3 Bernardo Garcia, I. T. Manager of PPR; Board 4 Tito Cabunagan, mechanical engineer of Palau Public Utilities Corporation; and reserve Eugenio Pastrana, many times venue host of chess tournaments in Palau.
The team captain is Australian Jamie Kenmure, who is also the Ratings Officer of PCF and have been instrumental to have the 2009 Palau National Chess Championship FIDE rated.
It enabled some local players to gain international ranking like Elpidio Manaligod, Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr., Michael Mercado, Manuel 'Jun' Mahor, Craig Dittrich, Romeo Caballes and Garcia.
The 7th member of the team, Mr. Jan-Olav Berglund was late in his application as Delegate because he was hospitalized for 5 months. His vast experience in Olympiad is really needed by a first time participant like Palau. If things will go smooth, Palau will finally send a team abroad.
Last year, Palau was represented by Hernandez in the Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Gold Coast, Australia. This became possible only because its President Gary Bekker sponsored Hernandez airfare through an airfare subsidy from the Sheikh of UAE.
With cheap airfare now by Palau's latest airline Pacificflier, players can afford to compete in Australia in the near future.
A total of 17 countries don't need Russian visas. They are Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Brazil, Croatia, Cuba, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Israel, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tajikistan, Ukraine and Uzbekistan.
Palau players need to apply for Russian visa in United States of America in Washington, New York, San Francisco, Seattle or Houston. They are instructed to apply for visas with the invitations only beginning with August 10, 2010. Before this date, they will not be given visas.
