Jose Omega, who is donating $100 for the champion's prize of the ongoing 2004 Non-Master Chess tourney, displayed a keen sense of humor in his game against Roberto Hernandez last Sunday by making an illegal move to concede the game. EIGHTH SEED Mike Miguel, Jr. upset 3rd seed Menandro Manuel in the 9th round of the 2004 Non-Master Chess tournament held on Sunday, March 07 at Paul Brothers Tri-M General Merchandise and Food Retail in Malakal.
Miguel, Jr. used his pet opening, the Bird, and pressured Manuel to be defensive all the way to the endgame.
His relentless attack forced the advesary to give up his bishop for 2 pawns but a very good handling of the endgame gave Mike his 6th victory in 9 games and is now a top contender for the top prize of $100 and a trophy.
Idle Cyril Montel, Jr. remains at 2nd place with a 6-3-0 win-loss-draw record. Danny Dandoy won by default over Amante Caballero and now shares 2nd place with Miguel, Jr. and Montel, Jr. with identical records.
The first game of the day featured 2nd seed and defending champion Roberto Hernandez against 6th seed Jose Omega, who has given to the chairman the $100 cash prize for the champion.
Omega used the Dragon Variation of Sicilian Defence and held his ground until the 37th move where he blundered away his queen in exchange for a knight.
Hoping that Hernandez will capture the queen to keep his initiative, he resigned when Hernandez checked his king first and thereby Omega lost his queen.
Co-host Lin de Guzman, a comptroller at Neco Group of Companies, lost his 11th round match-up with Jess Toldoya, a surveyor at Bureau of Land and Survey.
Toldoya, (5-1-1) is the only player with the least loss as he won by default over Caballero.
Nilo de Jesus, who was absent again for 4 consecutive weeks, and Caballero, split a point by default. Mariano Agustin, Jr., who works at the Philippine Embassy, also split a point with Caballero.
Bong Alipoon will be having a vacation on March 13 and might not be able to finish the tournament. By being present, he won by default over Caballero.
In the kid's division, Chris Domingo defeated former champion Jayrome Soriano (2-1) in their best of 3 series.
Soriano then bounced back from defeat and won over Michael Velarde (2-0).
OTHER GAMES RESULTED IN DEFAULTS"
Karen Hernandez d. Ricky Camacho and Georby Domingo; Velarde d. Camacho; Chris Domingo defeated his younger brother Georby; Camacho drew with Ivan II Chess Computer. Finally, Georby also drew with Ivan II and Camacho via default draws.
Defending champion Charles Aquino still leads the kid's division with a 7-1-1 slate.
Due to some development, the next chess tournament will be held on August 08, 2004. It might be an open tournament where players of all ages and nationalities will play in a double round-robin format.
Most of the junior players will not be participating so there will be no more divisions. A new tournament in May this year is not possible anymore because Hernandez is having a vacation.
He will be very busy for the Pacific Festival of Arts in July 22-31 so the best date for the next tourney is the above-mentioned date.
