JESS TOLDOYA became the lowest seeded player (12th) to win a title after drawing his final round game against defending champion and 2nd seed Roberto Hernandez in 45 moves of Sicilian Defence (Dragon Variation).
A draw was all he needed to clinch the title as Mike Miguel, Jr. will not have enough points to catch him up and lost his final game against Danny Dandoy, who placed 1st runner-up.
Dandoy got his first ever trophy in four tournaments that he participated.
Three players are tied for 3rd - 5th place-- Former champion Menandro Manuel, Miguel, Jr. and Mario Ramos, who will also get his first ever chess trophy in six tries.
After applying the Sonnenborn Berger system of tiebreak, Miguel, Jr. clinched the 2nd runner-up, Manuel settled for 3rd runner-up and Ramos, the 4th runner-up, his best finish ever.
Thus, Toldoya, with a 9-1-4 win-loss-draw record, became the 6th different champion in 6 chess tourneys that were held since June 09, 2002.
The first champion was Eddie Grefiel at the 2002 All-Filipino Chess tournament. The second was Consul General Julius Torres who bagged the 2002 Open championship.
Cyril Montel, Jr. (8-6-0) and Roberto Hernandez (7-5-2) are tied at 6th spot and after the tiebreak was applied, Hernandez edged out Montel, Jr. by a mere point, 51.5 - 50.5.
Wrapping up the final standings are 8. Ivan II Chess Computer (4-4-6); 9. Jose Omega (6-7-1) 10. Jimmy Valenzuela (5-7-2); 11. Co-host Lin de Guzman (5-8-1); 12. Bong Alipoon (3-7-4); 13. Mariano Agustin, Jr. (3-8-3) 14. Nilo de Jesus (1-8-5) and 15. Amante Caballero (0-10-4).
In the kid's division, defending champion Charles Aquino (12-1-1)successfully defended his title by defeating 16-year-old Michael Velarde (2-1) in their best-of-3 series match.
Velarde (8-6-0) won the first game but Aquino swept the last 2 to set up a championship game against 18-year-old Karen Gennibeth Hernandez (11-2-1).
Aquino blundered away a rook in the first game and resigned afterwards.
In game 2, he was down again in material but crawled back from defeat and won from a losing position.
With his confidence back, he won the rubber match game up by a rook and a pawn and Hernandez resigned and settled for 1st runner-up .
Velarde is 2nd runner-up, only half point ahead of 3rd runner-up Chris Domingo (7-6-1).
Fifth place is Ivan II Chess Computer (2-4-8) followed by Jayrome Soriano (3-8-3) and Georby Domingo (1-10-3).
Nilo de Jesus is donating $50.00 to the top 3 finishers (Aquino, Hernandez and Velarde).
The awarding of trophies, cash prizes and certificates will be held at the tournament venue, Paul Brothers Tri-M General Merchandise and Food Retail in Malakal on Sunday April 18 at 4:00 pm.
Its manager, Jojie Casinas, who donated the 9 trophies, will lead the awarding together with co-host Lin de Guzman, Omega and Chairman Roberto Hernandez.
After the completion of final round games, 6 players participated in one day blitz chess festival where Roberto Hernandez emerged as champion with a perfect 5 wins. Details will be published next issue.

NON-MASTERS CHESS TOURNEY

THE 2004 Non-Masters Chess Tournament concluded last Sunday, April 11, with Jess Toldoya and Charles Aquino grabbing the top spots in the seniors and juniors' categories respectively.
The tournament was held at the Paul Brothers Tri-M Gen. Mdse. and Food Retail in Malakal every Sundays since January.
Roberto Hernandez, tournament director, said that Toldoya bested 14 other participants with a win-loss-draw record of 9-1-4. The other winners in the seniors category, in order and with their corresponding win-loss-draw record, are Danny Dandoy, 10-4-0; Mike Miguel, Jr., 9-4-1; Menandro Manuel, 9-4-1, and Mario Ramos, 9-4-1.
The Sonnenborn Berger System of tiebreak was used to break the tie among Miguel, Manuel and Ramos.
The seniors played a single round-robin format and for the 18 and under, a double round robin format was used.
Jojie Casinas is this tournament's venue host and she is also the trophies sponsor. Casinas will provide the trophies for the 5 winners in the seniors' category and 4 junior winners.
Jose Omega donated $100 cash prize for the seniors. The first up to fourth runner-ups also won cash prizes.
For the juniors, next to Charles Aquino are Karen Hernandez, Michael Velarde and Chris Domingo. Nilo de Jesus donated the cash prizes for junior winners.
An awarding ceremony will be held at the tournament venue next Sunday.
