HERNANDEZ AND CHILTON TOP SEEDS
ON THE FINAL day of classification round the 2003 Age Group Chess Tournament, Roberto Hernandez was on top of the Class A qualifiers with a victory over previously unbeaten Cyril Montel, Jr. in 34 moves of Sicilian Defence. They both finished with 4 points but the winner over the other tiebreak system breaks the tie.
Bong Alipoon (3.5 pts.) is now the 3rd seed of Class A round robin championships. Top seed Menandro Manuel lost his first game of the tilt by default to Montel, Jr.
Other Class A qualifiers are Mariano Agustin, Jr. (3.5 pts.) who won over Allan Palomo by default but lost to Edgardo Enarsao (3 pts.). Jimmy Valenzuela (3 pts.) beat Mike Miguel, Jr. (2 pts.) and Mario Ramos (3 pts.) won by default also over Palomo to be the last qualifier.
Tutii Joe Chilton also finished with 3 points with victories over latecomer Kelvin dela Paz, Genaro Manlaya and Norbert Villanueva (by defaults) but lost in the Sonnenborn Berger tiebreak to Jun Mahor (5.5-4.5 total points).
Chilton is now the top seed in Class B followed by Eugene Koh, Miguel, Jr., Jon Lagumen, Palomo, Ben Ramos, Amante Caballero, Manlaya, Villanueva and dela Paz.
In the 12 years and under category, undefeated Jayrome Soriano continued his winning ways by defeating Chris Domingo, 2-1 in their best of 3 games. Top seed Dmitri Villanueva and I. B. Misech drew their match by a default draw. Dmitri and his father Norbert will be off island for 3 weeks for vacation.

UPSETS MARK 1ST ROUND
A STRING of upsets highlighted the start of the round-robin championship of the 2003 Age Group Chess Tournament sponsored by The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP). Eighth seed Jimmy Valenzuela upset 3rd seed Bong Alipoon and 4th seed Mariano Agustin, Jr.
Mario Ramos, seeded 9th, won over 2nd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. in a Ruy Lopez. Menandro Manuel, 5th seed and the 2003 Class A Open champion, became the highest rated player to be beaten by Ivan II Chess Computer. 7th seed Edgardo Enarsao
7th seed Edgardo Enarsao outlasted Agustin, Jr. in 52 moves of Irregular Opening. Top seed Roberto Hernandez won by default over Jun Mahor.
Class B results: Eugene Koh d. Genaro Manlaya; Mike Miguel, Jr. drew with Ben Ramos; Tutii Joe Chilton d. Kelvin dela Paz (default); Jon Lagumen d. Allan Palomo (default) and Amante Caballero drew with Norbert Villanueva by a default draw.
Michael Jordan (MJ) Ngiratechekii, 11 years old, who entered the 12 years and under category, won his first tournament game against Ivan II Chess Computer.
Genaro Manlaya, now a major sponsor of the tournament, is offering to pay the $10.00 registration fee for 3 more players who wish to enter the 12 years and below category after he paid for 11-year old I. B. Misech's entry fee.
Cris Gonzales is donating trophies for the top 4 finishers in Class A. A donor for Class B's four trophies is still being awaited for. Roberto Hernandez will design and make the two trophies for the champion and 1st runner-up of the 12 years and below category.
