'HOME COURT ADVANTAGE"
Bong Alipoon, left, practices with former champion Jess Toldoya, right, after the completion of regular games at Privilege Family Store in Malakal where Alipoon resides in the 2nd floor of the same building, while Morton Sawaichi, 2nd from left, works as bouncer in Island Bar, just beside the store. Cyril Montel, Jr. watches in the sideline. "Home Court" advantage seems to be working as Alipoon won the 4th runner-up plum while Sawaichi increased his rating from 1654 to 1780. Toldoya skipped the last 4 tournaments due to stress and just plays friendly games.

The 2005 Open Chess Tournament started on Sunday, May 22 with just one match completed between 14th seed Morton Sawaichi and Tutii Joe Chilton that ended in a short but masterful handling of the black pieces by Sawaichi and forcing mate on the 26th move as Chilton resigns in disbelief.
He thought that he trapped Sawaichi's queen but a rook check by the latter surprised the crowd as their game became eligible for $50.00 brilliancy prize as both players annotated their game.
Chilton employed the Center Counter Game and was about to lose a piece on the 16th move. His 21st move (Nb7) allowed Sawaichi to penetrate his 2nd rank and after a clever maneuver by Sawaichi, he set up a queen, rook and bishop attack that Chilton was unable to thwart as his queen is out of position in the queen side. It was Sawaichi's first round victory ever.
Ten players and a newcomer showed up but most of them are sizing up the opposition and decided to play 2 games next Sunday instead of playing one game unprepared.
The players that showed up but didn't play were the top 4 seeds Menandro Manuel, Roberto Hernandez, Cyril Montel, Jr. and Jose Omega; Jimmy Valenzuela, Gene Pastrana, Bong Alipoon and the come-backing Eric Espartero.
A newcomer has practiced blitz chess with Hernandez and will play his first tournament game on Sunday against an undetermined opponent.
Sonsored by Bendix N. Lakobong, Leo Lacambra, Jr. and Roswell C. Macapagal of T-Shirt Printing Atbp. The tournament site is at Privilege Family Store in Malakal.
Rob Willis didn't show up also and there is no communication between him and the chairman (Roberto) for over a week.
USA Civic Action Team (CAT) Officer-in-Charge Raymond Oviedo will field a co-worker. He can't participate due to job schedule conflict. He's willing to sponsor in some way (maybe cash prize for the top 5 finishers).
The trophy of 2004 Rapid Chess junior champion was finally awarded to Em-R de Vera. The 1st runner-up trophy of Chris Domingo is not yet finished but he received his certificate.
The trophies of other winners of the 2005 Regular Chess Tourney were awarded: Manuel -Champion; Montel, Jr. - 3rd runner-up and Alipoon - 4th runner-up. Certificates were given to Chilton, Alipoon (2), Montel, Jr. and Manuel.
Former champion Jess Toldoya, who's also present, gave Hernandez information about the current time control of 60 minutes for each player to finish the game. He said that the 90 minutes for each player to finish the game is the minimum minutes of time control to qualify for rating according to National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). Hernandez will consult the players about it on Sunday.
Palau application for membership to International Chess Federation (FIDE) was late for the Agenda of Board Meeting. The next Executive Board Meeting is on Aug. 2005 in Dresden, Germany.
They can't register Knights and Rooks Chess Club (Palau). It must be the national Chess Federation. The ask us to register the group as Palau Chess Federation and register as such.
Solution to last week's puzzle: 1. Qh3 Kd5 2. Qd7 mate. If 1. ...Kc4 2. Qd3 mate. And if 1. ...Ke4 then 2. Qf3 mate.
