(1057) OPEN CHESS TILT TO START MAY 22 (TBN-May 20-27, 2005)

THE SECOND chess tournament of the year will fire off this Sunday, May 22, at Privilege Family Store in Malakal and sponsored by Bendix N. Lakobong, Leo Lacambra, Jr. and Roswell C. Macapagal of T-Shirt Printing Atbp. They will sponsor the trophies for the top 5 finishers and the Most Improved Player as well as the $50.00 brilliancy game prize.

Top seed Eddie Grefiel, with a 2091 approximate rating, is still on vacation and he can catch up in the 2nd or 3rd round. Mario Ramos, who didn't finish the 2005 Regular Chess tournament due to transportation problem, had prepared for the tourney by solving hundreds of mate in 3 puzzles that he got from the Chairman (Roberto Hernandez), while Rob Willis, the American security staff of Sengkar Security, practiced with Hernandez by using the tournament format (chess clock, annotation, strategy and tactics of the game).

Eighth seed Jimmy Valenzuela borrowed Ivan II Chess Computer for 3 weeks to get some quality practice with the machine.

The trophies of 2005 Regular Chess Tournament will be given before the start of the tournament to the following: Menandro Manuel, champion; Cyril Montel, Jr., 3rd runner-up and Bong Alipoon, 4th runner-up. The Most Improved Player (Dennis Gonzales) trophy will be given after Lacambra, Jr. returns from vacation in June.

Em-R de Vera, the 2004 Junior Champion of Rapid Chess tournament, will also get his trophy on Sunday after Tutii Joe Chilton finished his trophy on Saturday.

If Chilton can finish the rest of the trophies, it will also be awarded on the opening day of the 2005 Open.
