AWESOME FOURSOME
L-R GM Eugene Torre, GM Wesley So, Almario Marlon Bernardino, Jr. and Palau's Roberto Hernandez have a rare opportunity to be in one photo. The awesome foursome's contribution to chess in Philippines and Palau is immeasurable.
3RD PAX CUP STARTS OCT. 23
FOURTEEN PLAYERS have already registered in the 3rd Edition of Paquito 'Pax' Suringa Cup Rapid Chess tournament to be held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 on Oct. 23 onwards with no specific schedule of games.
It depends on the availability of the participants in this double round-robin format using the time control of 30 minutes of each player to finish the game.
The names of the participants were drawn and it is as follows: 1. Ferdie Altea 2. Eli Madrinan 3. Nino Flores 4. Pax Suringa, Jr. 5. Migs Gancayco 6. Edwin Acuyan 7. Dan Roldan 8. Rey Alenain 9. Bong Gutierrez 10. Roberto Hernandez 11. Ronnie Capio 12. Rudel Roxas 13. Joel Gabris 14. Jeff Negrillo.
Writing chess notations is optional in this kind of time control. As in the 2007 PRR Rating Chess Tournament, Hernandez will play 2 or 3 players at the same time as odds to the weaker players. Pax may do the same if he wishes too.
Hernandez will suggest that 11-year old George Anzawa be invited to give the some of Japanese Counselor at Japanese Embassy some exposures to better players as preparation for him in case he made it as member of Palau Chess Team to 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey.
His mom Adele, who is a member of Palau Women's Chess Team, might also be invited. Anyway, she is dropping George and to save time and also give her some exposures to play against higher rated players as half of the participants will have their FIDE international rating this coming November.
On the day of his return from a 22-day vacation, Hernandez called Congressman Prospero 'Butch' Pichay about the amount of cash prize that he will donate for the 3rd Palau Invitational Chess Championship to be held at Palau Royal Resort on Dec. 14-22, 2011.
He didn't commit yet about the amount and promised to call Hernandez back when he has decided what amount he will contribute.
The invited players for the event are FIDE Master Christopher Castellano, who is a very good singer, FIDE Arbiter Dr. Alfredo Paez, who is coming with his wife to try and enjoy Palau, USA and Phil. Master Almario Marlon Bernardino, Jr., who participated in the 2006 inaugural
Palau Invitational Chess Championship; International Arbiter Erwin Carag; Papua New Guinea's top chess player Joselito Marcos; Palau team captain to the 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Russia Jamie Kenmure and another Australian (male or female).
Bernardino, who is also a journalist, was given by Hernandez the cross table of the recently concluded 2011 Palau National Chess Championship where Tito Cabunagan, Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and Hernandez shared the title.
He asked Hernandez to write a separate story about the 2011 PICC and he will publish it in Bulgar Newspaper where he writes stories about chess and billiards.
During the 18th birthday celebration of GM Wesley So on Oct. 09, GM Eugene Torre was given a copy of Tia Belau by Hernandez and showed him the Chess Mate article.
His attention was focused immediately to the Sudoku, a number puzzle, and asked Hernandez if he can answer it. Upon agreeing, Torre finished the Sudoku in less than 30 minutes. Many people uses pencil in solving it but Torre used a ball pen.
