JAPANESE COUPLE YOSHITAKA YASHIMA AND ASAMI YASHIMA

TOKYO, JAPAN AND BUENOS AIRES,
ARGENTINA WILL BID TO HOST
2020 WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD
AS EARLY as 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, the news that Tokyo, Japan will bid to host the 2020 World Chess Olympiad make chess players in Palau excited because it's just 5-6 hours trip from Palau to Japan unlike if it is held in Europe, it takes 32-36 hours of flying to reach it.
In the 2010 World Chess Olympiad in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia, Tromso, Norway won the bid to host the 2014 WCO. On the night that Norway won it, world's no. 1 at that time Magnus Carlsen and some Norwegian teammates are celebrating at the lobby of the Twin Hotel Olympics.
Palau rep to 2010 WCO Roberto Hernandez and Papua New Guinea Board 1 player CM Joselito Marcos are sitting next to Carlsen and teammates.
Joselito noticed that Roberto is eager to have photo session with Magnus and he gave him a piece of advise -- "Just because you're sitting next to world's no. 1, you will act like you're excited about it. Just ignore him and let's enjoy the rest of the first rest day of the Olympiad."
Earlier in 2009, Joselito predicted that "There's no doubt that Magnus will be the world champion. The only question is when."
It happened when Magnus defeated 5-time defending champion Viswanathan Anand and Roberto don't have a photo with Magnus when he featured the 22-year-old new champ in Chess Mate by Roberto Hernandez.
Does he regretted that ignoring in Russia? Of course not. There are still many chances especially in Tromso, Norway when Roberto is about to have photo with Magnus walking on the sidewalk in front of Raddison Blu Hotel but a group of young Asian lady chess players prevented that chance.
During the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in Istanbul, Turkey, Roberto noticed a poster that said "2016 Baku World Chess Olympiad". He thought that Baku won already the bid to host the 2016 Olympiad. He asked a guy installing a TV/camera, "Where is Baku?"
The guy can't speak English and he pointed at a lady in-charge of the booth. She said Baku is in Azerbaijan and they haven't won the bid yet and that Baku is the birthplace of former world chess champion Gary Kasparov.
Roberto said to her that he will ask Palau Delegate Jan Berglund to vote for Baku and she gave Roberto a magnet souvenir which Roberto gave to Joselito, who missed the Istanbul Olympiad due to health reasons a week before the start of Olympiad.

GOOD LUCK, RUDEL!
Roberto Hernandez, left, shakes hand with Rudel Roxas, right, who will be leaving Palau for good on April 17, 2012. In this case, he can't compete anymore for the remaining semifinal slots being contested in the 3rd Pax Cup where he has a chance to make it. Bong Gutierrez benefited from this to make it to the semifinal of the tourney that will end on April 22.

Roberto, CM Bernardo Garcia and CM Joselito Marcos attended the hosting party of Georgia for the bid to host the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi.
They were given souvenir items such as bag, earthen ceramic/clay shot glass, red wine, white t-shirt and ball pen.
Baku 2016 World Chess Olympiad souvenir items were also given like beautifully designed glass with under-liner, USB (bracelet shape/design flash drive), shoulder bag, etc.
Palau women's team members Angelica Parrado, Destiny Sisior and Gladys Anne Paloma arrived late and they didn't get the souvenir items. Joselito is generous enough to give his crafted glass/under-liner to Destiny.
Roberto got extra souvenir items from Baku and Batumi and when he came back to Palau, he gave those to Palau Royal Resort GM (General Manager, not Grand Master) Masayuki Kawaguchi --glass/under-liner for his wife Midori, red wine, Norwegian chocolate, earthen shot glass and beautiful pen from Asian Chess Federation.
PRR Director of the Board Michelle Liao were also given by Roberto the glass/under-liner (2 sets), Norwegian chocolate, Batumi ball pen and Norwegian reindeer stuff toy. She asked Roberto, "Are you going to Baku and Batumi?" Roberto said yes.
On the final day of 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway, Roberto is on his way to the exit when he saw the sign "Buenos Aires 2020 World Chess Olympiad".
It means that Tokyo, Japan's bid will have a strong contender to host an Olympiad outside Europe. Roberto always reiterate to his Japanese friends (old and new), that it is very nice for a Chess Olympiad to be hosted by a country outside Europe esp. Japan even though it has already won the bid to host the 2020 Summer Olympics.
ISN'T IT NICE TO HOST THE NO. 1 AND NO. 4 TOP SPORTS EVENTS IN THE WORLD IN TERMS OF PARTICIPATING NATIONS? IN THE SAME YEAR?

CHESS IN CHINA
IN APRIL 03, 2012, Roberto Hernandez
got an invitation from Mr. James Waldron, the President of Shanghai Chess Club
that says:
Dear Sir, We are the premier vehicle for organizing
Chess in China’s financial centre, Shanghai.
Our team tournament in August will be
open for both Sponsored Teams (such as China Construction Bank and Natixis
teams) and National based Teams (we have invited national teams from all over
Asia).
We
have secured sponsorship from local government and businesses of an initial
250,000 RMB (29,777.29 EUR) .
We will provide accommodation and
flights for 10 GMs, with a proposed prize fund of 100,000 RMB (11,912.30 EUR).
This email is for two purposes, first to
introduce myself and second to invite you and your Federation to this event we
have in August.
Please email me back if you are
interested. Yours faithfully, James Waldron
Hernandez responded with: Dear Mr. James Waldron,
Thank you very much for the invitation.
The date of your tournament is too close to the 2012 World Chess Olympiad in
Istanbul, Turkey which will be held in August 27-Sept. 12, 2012.
We
are sending a team in the Open and a team in women's division in this coming
Olympiad so I guess we can't send a team for your Luijiazui Team tournament.
The 2014 World Chess Olympiad will be held
in Tromso, Norway. Is there any attempt from China to host an Olympiad? They
are in the top 10 now in the world so there must be some efforts to host an
Olympiad. It must not be always in Europe --2002 Bled, Slovenia; 2004 Calvia,
Spain; 2006 Torino, Italy; 2008 Dresden, Germany; 2010 Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia
and now
2012
Istanbul, Turkey.
Our GM (General Manager) at Palau Royal
Resort is now the GM of Nikko Hotel (Shanghai) after spending 7 years as GM
here at PRR. During his farewell party in March 20, 2012, I mentioned to him
that maybe we'll see each other again in China if a Chess Olympiad will be held
there. To know more about me, Palau and chess in Palau, please log on to our
website http://palau-chess.blogspot.com Thank you once again and we'll keep in touch.
Best
regards.

Mr. Waldron responded promptly with:
Dear Mr. Hernandez,
I agree with you whole-heartedly, the
Olympiad must not always be in Europe and we are working, in our small way, to
try and change that.
It is a shame that you can't make it to
Shanghai this time. This tournament would be the perfect practice tournament
for the Olympiad. And with your contact at the Nikko (just down the road from
me, in a city of 23 million that is quite a coincidence!) you might be able to
secure accommodation for your stay.
We have sponsorship materials we could
send to your friend if this was something you were interested in doing. All the best,
James
