IN THE penultimate round of 2013 Palau Blitz Chess Championship, Sunday, June 09, newcomer Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. replaced Glen Navarosa and comeback player Elpidio Manaligod took the spot of Gonzalo Escapatoria.
Later in the afternoon, Rustum Cabuso replaced the spot for Rafael Paloma while 2 weeks ago, Herbert Galiza filled in for Manuel Mahor, Jr. on the 11th spot of the drawn numbers of 18 players.
Pacenos, Jr. was able to play 12 games – sweeping Remrel Dizon and Jeff Balbalosa. He defeated frontrunner Tito Cabunagan in their 1st game but lost in their 2nd game. He was swept by another frontrunner Roberto Hernandez and split the match with another newcomer John Joseph Pabiona (not Fabiola as previously printed).
His first game of the day was against Manaligod which turned out to be a draw by repetition. He’s not aware that 3-move repetition is a draw. He lost his 2nd game against LP (short for Elpidio).
Cabuso won a game versus Hernandez and Cabunagan but was swept by Jose Celiz. He drew his first game against Balbalosa and won the 2nd one.
Paquito Suringa, Jr. and Hernandez played their 2 games at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 where Hernandez won the first one and lost the 2nd game due to overconfidence being ahead by 3 pawns.
Hernandez was able to talk to Mohammad Manik Hossain on Tuesday afternoon to confirm if he can still make it on the final day of the tourney. He was able to arranged his schedule for Sunday, Father’s Day, June 16 and will be able to play as many games as he can starting at 1 pm.
It’s still possible to play all 32 games before 6pm on Sunday if the time control doesn’t have increment. Hernandez made a list of priority games mostly for Manik against players who have played the least games –Eugene Labarda, Cabuso, Herbert, Pabiona, Gene Pastrana, Dizon, Suringa, LP, Pacenos and Dennis Gonzales.
FINAL STANDINGS OF PLAYERS AND THEIR WIN-LOSS-DRAW RECORD:

These records will be done at 5:30 pm on Sunday, June 16 to give a little time for Monday’s issue of Tia Belau and because Hernandez will be working at 6:00 pm. He will have a 22-day vacation from June 21-July 12, 2013 so there will be no extension for this blitz chess championship.
