ANOTHER JOSE WITH A PERFECT START
Jose Celiz, left, had a perfect start in the 2013 Palau Blitz chess championship. He swept Paquito Suringa, Jr., right, in their game last Sunday, May 19. CELIZ ON A PERFECT 4-0 START
JOSE Celiz didn’t win a single game in the 2013 Palau Rapid Chess Championship because he took his vacation on the same date of that tourney.
He lost his first 2 games to Dennis Gonzales and to Palau’s top chess player Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. All his remaining games were declared draws.
But in the ongoing 2013 Palau Blitz Chess Championship, he scored a perfect 4 out of 4 by sweeping Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. and Nilo de Jesus followed suit.
During the game of Tito Cabunagan and Cyril, the former has scrambled one of the pawns of Cyril and when he returned it, it’s not in its right square. Cyril complain about it when he is about to lose that game.
Roberto Hernandez and Dennis Gonzales, who got their National Arbiter License from World Chess Federation (FIDE) a few weeks ago, are the Chief Arbiter and Deputy Arbiter of the tourney respectively.
Roberto decided that Tito and Cyril have to play a new game in which both players agreed. If Cyril knew about the rule about it, he should have press his clock and inform Tito that unless you have put the pawn back to its right place or square, his clock will continue to run. If the scrambled piece/s were put in the right place, that is acceptable to both players, that’s the time that Tito can press his clock but losing some precious seconds.
STANDINGS OF THE PLAYERS AND THEIR WIN-LOSS-DRAW RECORD:
1. Jose Celiz (4-0-0) 4 pts. 2. Roberto Hernandez (3-1-0) 3 pts. 3. Tito Cabunagan (3-4-0) 3 pts. 4. Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. (2-1-0) 2.5 pts. 5. Dennis Gonzales (1-0-1) 1.5 pts. 6. Nilo de Jesus (1-5-1) 1.5 pts. 7. Remrel Dizon (0-1-0) 0 pt. 8. Paquito Suringa, Jr. (0-2-0) 0 pt.
Mohammad Manik Hossain, Gonzalo Escapatoria and Jeffrey Balbalosa confirmed their participation to Roberto and they will play as many games as they can to catch up.
Gene Pastrana also confirmed his participation but he can’t play this Sunday, May 26.
18 players are listed in the Open (Men’s) Division of this double round-robin format. It means that a total of 34 games have to be played by each participant.
The time control is 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment to finish the game. A player can play as much as 10 games in one day because of the speed of time control.
Registration fee is only $5.00 to be used as cash prize for the top 4 finishers. The women and junior divisions are combined into one group but the time control for juniors is 10 minutes + 3 sec. increment to the women’s 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment.
If Miguel Hilario, Jr., Jaime dela Cruz, Eugene Labarda, Glen Navarosa and Rafael Paloma can’t confirm their participation, their slots are open for those who would like to join in this FIDE rated tournament.
FIDE will publish the results of 2013 Palau Rapid Chess Championship in June. All participants will have their Rapid chess ratings. FIDE is now rating all tournaments in the world in Standard, Rapid and Blitz.
The current blitz tournament’s results will be published in August.
Palau’s Rating Officer Jamie Kenmure of Australia is asking Roberto the list of those who would participate in the 2013 Palau National Chess Championship where the top 10 of Palau will fight it out for the national title while the rest will have the reserve group. There will be a separate division for women and junior to determine the 2013 Palau’s women and junior champions.
