THE OFFICERS AND MEMBERS OF KNIGHTS AND ROOKS CHESS CLUB ARE PLANNING AN EXCLUSIVE CHESS TOURNAMENT FOR KIDS 15 YEARS AND BELOW WITH THE CHAMPION TO GET:
$100.00 cash, 2nd place -- $75.00, 3rd place -- $50.00 and 4th place --$25.00.
The tourney will be for Palauan kids only and will be held during school's Christmas break.
The proposed venue is the Palau Community College (PCC) Cafeteria or outside the Cafeteria.
The cash prizes of the event will be raised by the members of KRCC through personal contributions.
Eleven-year-old Udui Meriang will be a top candidate to bag the title and cash. Other aspiring chess talents might be discovered through this innovative idea.
This is the chance of young kids to try the game of kings to explore and hone their talents.
This was discussed after the completion of regular games of the ongoing rapid chess tournament held Sunday, November 18 at Jean's Boutique and Store where veteran-newcomer Tony Villa avenged his only loss of the tournament from Jose Omega and a masterful conquest of venue host Gene Pastrana and Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich.
He is now on the verge of capturing his first title in Palau in his very first participation. He's been in Palau for just 4 months teaching skilled job training at Palau Community College.
Other results of the 8th week of the tournament: 4th seed Cyril Montel, Jr. swept the young Palauan bet Flavin 'Matlab' Andres while Omega drubbed Pastrana.
A five-player blitz chess competition was held after the regular games. The players were Villa, Roberto Hernandez, Montel, Jr., Omega and Pastrana.
Three other tough players joined while the games are in progress. They are National Masters Manny Nedic and Menandro Manuel and 6th seed Edwin Eti, who donated $100.00 for the cash prize of the rapid chess event.
Villa lost his first game to Omega but bounced back with 5 straight wins and a draw in his last game to Manuel to clinch another blitz title by a mere half point over Hernandez, who won 5 games and lost 2 to finish 2nd again to Villa in 2 consecutive events!
Manuel and Eti were tied at 3rd with an identical 4-2-1 win-loss-draw slate.
Nedic (3-4-0), Omega (2-4-1), Montel, Jr. (2-5-0) and Pastrana (1-6-0) completes the final standings.
