NEWEST MEMBER OF PCF AND PMCC
Jeffrey Penoliar, right, is the newest chess enthusiast of Palau. We practice till 4 am last Saturday night, March 30 prior to the Awarding of the Top 3 Finishers of the recently concluded 2019 PRCC. He was baptized at the PMCC 3 weeks ago and we attended the Annual Thanksgiving before going for the awarding and mini blitz contest. In the middle is Bruce Soriano, one of the newest members of PCF watching the game between Manik Hossain and Jeffrey, who can speak a little Arabic and Bangladesh language.

AWARDING OF THE TOP 3 FINISHERS OF
          2019 P.R.C.C. ON MARCH 31

As scheduled, the Awarding of the Top 3 Finishers of the 2019 Palau Rapid Chess Championship will be held on March 31, at Bethlehem Park.

The last day is supposed to be finished on March 31 but because of the agreement of all the present players, it was held after the completion of the 8th round with Bobot Tan (with 8 points) adding another plum in his domination of Palau chess in the last 2 years. Angel Salvadora came in 2nd with 6.5 points, tied with Jeff Balbalosa, who defeated the previously unbeaten Bobot in the final round, he finished 3rd.

The ever-improving Angie Sisior took the 4th place and Manuel Mahor finished at 5th after he defeated the surprising Jennifer Angeles, for her best ever finish in any Palau Rapid chess tournament--9th place.

I won my last 3 games (vs. Mary Grace Capili, Jun Cabugao Mintar and Angie) to finished tied with Angie and Mahor (all with 6 points).Angelil Sisior and Samuel Palingcod finished 7th to 8th respectively. Tied at 9th-14th are Jennifer Tubtub, Jun Cabugao MintarDestiny SisiorManik HossainJhoan Gemota and Paquito Suringa Jr.

At solo 15th is Soriano Bruce followed by 6 players with 4 points each--16th-21st--Kyarii SisiorAngelica Morales Magno, Capili, Michael Adette Gulla, my guitar/chess student Brandon Kyle Soriano and Rommel Ramon Gulla. At solo 22nd is Aome Angeles. At 29th -31st are Solomon Islands Carlos Santus Amo Sifix, Bin Robinson Luo Cabrera and Jedidia Marinas.

I will prepare the 3 medals for Bobot, Angelo and Jeff on Sun. and after the awarding, the mini blitz chess contest will be held with $1.00 registration fee. If the contestants will reach 20, the cash prize of the champion will be $10.00, 2nd place --$6.00 and 3rd place--$4.00. The time control is 5 minutes + 3 seconds increment. It might be 7 or 9 round Swiss system.

Eshan Kalyanikar, a new Indian reporter of Island Times would like to practice chess and I invited him to go to Bethlehem Park to see how chess is doing in Palau. Three employees of Palau Royal Resort are also hooked now in playing chess and will participate or observe how the top players of Palau play the game of kings. They are Janela Reyes, Jeffrey Penoliar and Joel Manalo from Purchasing Department. Pax, Jeffrey, Joel and me  practiced with time clock till 4 am. Jeffrey and Joel are amazed how fun it is to play with time clock. The time control being 5 min. + 3 seconds increment.

It is the Annual Thanksgiving of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale to be held on the same date (March 31) at VIP Hotel (former Arirang Restaurant). I invited all the participants in the mini blitz contest to have lunch there and then proceed to Bethlehem Park which is just across the road.

At about 1:45 pm, while I am loading the keyboard to my car, I saw Bobot on his way to Bethlehem Park. I invited him to have lunch at VIP Conference Room but he said he ate already. While practicing, some players asked if there is still lunch available (it's 3 pm then) but I said no more. We rented the place from 10 am -- 2 pm.

4 NEWCOMERS IN THE 2019 PRCC
Except for Nobu Yano, the other 3 newcomers of the 2019 PRCC are in this photo. Carlos Santus Amo Sifix, left, lost to Manuel ‘Jun’ Mahor, Jr., right, in the 1st round. Carlos is from Solomon Islands. I met all the reps of Solomon Islands in the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia. Carlos is a soccer teammate of my piano/chess student. At far right is Khol Sugiyama, who lost to Jennifer in the 1st round but won over Dave Cristobal in the 2nd round. Bruce Soriano, 4th from right, is the father of my guitar/chess student Brandon Kyle Soriano, 2nd from left.

        ROUND 3 OF 2019 P. R. C. C.;
30 PLAYERS WILL SLUG IT OUT

The first 2 rounds of 2019 PRCC had only 26 players. I referred to Palau Rating Officer Jamie Kenmure on how to accommodate the other 5 late comers—Mohammad Manik Hossain, who just came back from participating in the prestigious Tokyo Marathon on March 6, 3rd seed Paquito Suringa, Jr., Jedidia Marinas, newcomer Nobu Yano and Reece Reklai, who won $150.00 in Guam Oceania Zonal Chess Championship for topping the 1600 and under category.

Jamie asked me to send to him the Swiss Perfect files --.trn  .sco and .ini and he came out with this 3rd round pairings after Reece confirmed he can’t make it—(First name to play the white pieces) 1. Jeff vs. Angelo 2. Bobot vs. Sam 3. Angie vs. Angelil 4. Aome vs. me 5. Rustum vs. Angel Magno 6. Mary Grace Capili vs. Jun Mintar 7. Michael Gulla vs. Jun Mahor 8. Kyle Soriano vs. Destiny 9. Jennifer vs. Bruce Soriano 10. Khol Suigiyama vs. Kyarii Sisior 11. Rommel Gulla vs. Pax 12. Carlos Santus Amo Sifix vs. Manik 13. Wakako Sisior vs. Joan Gemota 14. Mary Jane Bojo vs. Jedidia and 15. Dave Cristobal vs. Nobu Yano.

Jennifer is now the Chief Arbiter and she has to play to complete the 30-player requirement to gain an FA norm. Jamie asked me to ask Carlos Santus Amo Sifix if he would like to be registered under Solomon Islands where he came from. Jamie is also the Rating Officer of Solomon Islands, Guam and Palau. After teaching piano/chess to him, I mentioned to him that we have a new chess player from Solomon Islands, which happens that Carlos is a teammate of him in their soccer team.

The 2 games (Rd. 3 and 4) will start at 2pm. Rustum suggested a week prior to the event, that we should start at 1 pm so he can still go to work later in the afternoon. I brought all the tables, chairs and chess equipment at Bethlehem Park at 12:30 with Sam and Jun Mintar the only players there that early. Rustum came at past 2 pm.

                Solution to last week’s puzzle No. 3483: 1. h8=N!! Ke8 2. Bc6#

The History of Chess in Palau
             By Roberto Hernandez
             June 09, 2002 -- March 11, 2019

Because I am the Chief Arbiter of 2019 Palau Blitz Chess Championship, I don't have time to get photos taken with me and the 36 participants.

There are 311 photos of that event, but not even a single photo, I don't have any. That's how busy I am with that 2019 PBCC that resulted in me having gained the needed norms to be a FIDE Arbiter (FA).

This last photo of the opening day of 2019 Palau Rapid Chess Championship on March 03, is just a selfie with Bruce Soriano, whom I have pursued to join to make it a 26-player event. Not enough yet for Jennifer Angeles to get an FA norm. We need 30 players. But with the addition of late comers like Mohammad Manik Hossain, who just came back from participating in the prestigious Tokyo Marathon in March 3, 2019, Paquito Suringa, Jr., Jedidia Marinas and Nobu Yano, the target number will be met.
