 Five players were added in the resumption of 2019 PRCC --Manik Hossain, Paquito Suringa Jr., Jedidia Marinas, Nobu Yano and another newcomer Bin Robinson Luo Cabrera, middle.

At left is Manik Hossain, a sure participant in the 2019 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Tumon, Guam in Feb. 17-24 and will proceed to Tokyo, Japan as the sole rep of Palau in the prestigious Tokyo Marathon in March 03, 2019.

Bobot, Angie, Gian Gabriel--Champs

Two days before Christmas, on Dec. 23, 2018 at Ernguul Park (formerly Bethlehem Park), the last round (9th) of the 2018 PNCC was held with the title already secured by Bobot Tan. 

Cyril Tomas Almitante-Montel needs a draw to secure 2nd slot. There are 4 players with 5 points each--Paquito Suringa Jr.Jeff Balbalosa, me, and Samuel Palingcod. Three players have 4.5 points--Gonzalo Escapatoria, Angel Salvadora and Tito Cabunagan while another 4 have 4 points--Manuel Mahor, Dennis Gonzales, Neph Macasaet and Jello Aguaras. Two have 3.5 points – Angelito Mintar, Jr.  and Glen Navarroza while Remrel Dizon has 3 points. Mohammad Manik Hossain and Reece Reklai have 2.5 points each while Charley Patris had 2. At the cellar is Morton Sawaichi, who has yet to score a point. He needs half point at least to have his initial FIDE rating.

Dennis and Jello played their game already earlier in the week with Dennis prevailing. Angelo drubbed Jojo in 39 moves of French Defense and Tito easily disposed Neph in just 28 moves of Pirc Defense. Charley won over Reece in 38 moves of Queen’s Pawn Opening; Sam and Cyril halved the point in another 38 moves with Cyril ahead in material and position but could not convert it to a whole point.

 The last game of the day is another draw between Jeff and Pax in an endgame of bishop of the same color. Remrel didn't show up to give the last round point to Jun Mahor. Morton finally scored a whole point by mating Glen. 

Jun Mintar pressed the clock of Manik Hossain until it expired to claim the win but Manik came before 5 pm. He doesn't have his cell phone with him. I ask Jun if he would give a chance to Manik to play their game with Manik's clock at 30 min. and his--1 hour and 30 minutes. Manik will be treating everybody with soda in gratitude of Jun letting him play their game in which he prevailed consuming only 20 minutes of his time.

 My game with Bobot is an exciting one heading for a draw but Bobot captured the b7 pawn that allowed me to force the exchange of queens with me having a passed f pawn that clinches the 3rd spot (6 points) after he resigned on the 56^th moves with a pawn move and putting down his king as a sign of surrendering. I am ready to offer a draw sign which we have learned from 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia where his opponent in the 9^th round Andre Stratonowitsch crossed his 2 index fingers as a sign that he’s offering a draw.

 l won my first round game over Jello, lost the next 3 to Cyril, Jun Mahor and Dennis but won the last 5 over Morton, Neph, Charley, Pax and Bobot. It's almost the same story in the 2002 All-Filipino Chess Tournament in June 09, 2002 (the first ever chess tournament in Palau) where I won my last 5 games to clinched 3rd runner-up.

 In the junior division, we have a new junior champion in Gian Gabriel Claronino. Kyarii Sisior and Michael Adette Gulla are tied at 2nd and 3rd spot while Rommel Gulla clinched 4th and Aome Jacob Angeles is 5th with 2 points.

                    Nick Nehez missed the 2018 PNCC Junior Division participation due to his attending the junior diving course during the first 4 weeks of PNCC. He is now a certified junior diver. 2^nd Seed Bobot Tan dealt Tito Cabunagan his first loss in the 5^th round of 2018 Palau National Chess Championship held at Ernguul Park on Nov. 25 to gain solo leadership when Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. dealt Angelo Salvadora his first loss as well in a game held at the former residence.

                 Cyril Tomas Almitante-Montel snapped the 3-game winning streak of Manuel Mahor; Paquito Suringa Jr. dealt Angel Salvadora his first loss in a match played at the former's residence; Dennis Gonzales didn't show up to give Gonzalo Escapatoria a default win; Charley Patris suffrered another setback at the hands of Jeff Balbalosa; Glen Navarroza (Osman M Marte) and Angelito Mintar, Jr. drew their game in a marathon 69 moves;

                   Samuel Palingcod clobbered Reece Reklai; Neph Macasaet collected his 2nd point by nipping Manik Hossain in a shorter time control on Nov. 18 after the completion of the 4th rd.; Remrel Dizon didn't show up and give a whole point to Jello Aguaras and I won over Morton Sawaichi in just 18 moves. I uploaded Magnus Carlsen apps to Morton's cell phone so that he can have more practice session with it.

                  In the women's division, Angelil Sisior touted Angel Magno in 35 moves of Sicilian Defense; Prior to that, Angelil won over her younger sister Destiny Sisior in 33 moves of Sicilian Defense in a game held at their residence. 

Angie Parrado is still in a perfect start after she defeated Palau's No. 2 woman chess player Baby Edna Mission in just 18 moves of French Defense. In the only game of the junior division, Gian Gabriel Claronino is on track to win his first major title with a conquest of Kyarii Sisior in 48 moves of Queen’s Pawn Opening.

Bobot and Jojo played their game at Pax residence and Bobot keeps his unbeaten record intact win a victory over Jojo in 42 moves. Likewise, Tito Cabunagan and Angelito Mintar, Jr. played their game with Tito prevailing.

          I was the Guest Speaker in the PMA Chess in School 3^rd Batch on Nov. 28 at 2:15-3:00 pm. There are 14 participants in this batch with 2 Taiwanese—Derbai, Chioko Yang and Kuo Yu Hsuan, 2 Chinese—Liao, Xiancheng and Liu, Yi Lang, 2 Filipinos—Miclat, Mariah Coline and Osada, Aya, a Korean—Shin, Sowon, a Filipino-Bangladeshi—Islam, Jannah and 6 Palauans—Rechucher, Diana; Renguul, Joram; Roberto, Neil; Senior, Alik Jared; Sumang, Kikuo and my chess/piano student Tmetuchl, Dichem.

                They will be having a blitz chess tournament this December so I am preparing the single round-robin Swiss Perfect format for this.

                After missing the last 3 rounds of 2018 PNCC, Jennifer Angeles and her son Aome will play this coming Sunday, Dec. 2. She will be playing first Joan Gemota at 1pm and another game later to catch up. Aome had played only one game so far. Kyarii, Gian Gabriel, Michael and Rommel are waiting.

5TH AND 6TH ROUND OF 2018 PALAU RAPID CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP -- APRIL 15 AT ERNGUUL PARK... Bobot Tan kept his perfect record (again!) in the resumption of 5th and 6th rounds of 2018 PRCC. Angelica Morales Magnodidn't make it so she lost her game to Glen M Navarroza and to me. After the 6th round is finished, the 7th rd. that fits Cyril Tomas Almitante-Montel vs. Bobot was played with the latter prevailing after escaping with a win like what happened in the 2017 PNCC. Cyril lost also to Tito Cabunagan earlier while I lost also to Tito in the last game of the day. Mohammad Manik Hossain came at 4:30 pm because he played already his 5th rd. game vs. Cyril last week. Rustum Cabuso is waiting for him and left before Manik came. Their game was reset for next week. Tito won over Bheng Codinera Mendoza; I defeated Jennifer Tubtub Angeles; Angie Sisior scored a point over Leif Toribiong; Morton Sawaichi came late but his opponent (Christopher Kitalong) didn't show up so he won by default; Rustum had a bye,.In the 6th rd. Bobot nips Angie; Jennifer lost another one to Angel Salvadora; Glen won by default over Kitalong and Bheng clobbered Leif. Morton had a bye for another whole point. Next week's matches will feature Angie vs. Glen; Angelo vs. Morton; Manik vs. Jennifer; Bheng vs. Rustum; Kitalong vs. Leif and Magno will had a bye.
