(1611) MUSIC AND ME (Aug. 30, 2018) PASTOR FRANCIS JAVILLONAR--MULTI-TALENTED MUSICIAN

PASTOR FRANCIS JAVILLONAR --
  MULTI-TALENTED MUSICIAN

When I attended the Pacific Area Fellowship of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ in Saipan from Feb. 22-26, 2018, I met for the first time the couple Pastor Francis and Claire Javillonar.

I am the first one to arrive and the last one to leave. On my first day, Feb. 22, they fetched me at the airport and treated me to a lunch at Filipino restaurant where the workers are attending the Sunday services as well as the everyday morning devotion, Bible study on Wednesdays and Prayer Meeting on Fridays.

On Feb. 23, we fetched Pastor Dora Ramos (Maui, Hawaii) and newly appointed Presbyter Gali Concepcion and we had photo session at the airport.

I noticed the many talents of Pastor Francis--from carpentry works, musical instruments (keyboard, bass guitar, rhythm and lead guitar) and leadership.

When I helped in the setting of stage for the Opening Ceremony of the Pacific Area Fellowship, I noticed his creativity in carpentry. He has a complete set of power and manual tools for modern and creative ideas that only few people had. Brother Rolly Adducul of PMCC Palau Locale is also very talented in carpentry and guitar. I have donated many power and manual tools for PMCC Palau.

Pastor Francis bought a very nice Yamaha keyboard in Guam for about a thousand dollars. There's somebody who used it and tried to move the keyboard with the stand and it fell on the ground. It caused a damage to the LCD screen and it is not working properly.

I noticed also that there is no sustain pedal of the keyboard. If I had known that, I should have brought my sustain pedal.

I taught his only son keyboard lesson for about an hour. On my last hours with the Javillonar family, I teach Pastor Francis the fastest way to learn all the chords of the piano with a formula taught to me by a professional pianist in the Philippines--from Major, minor, 7th, Major 7th, 6th, minor 6th, sustain, augmented, diminish, diminish 7th, 7th sustain, minor 7th etc.

While they are sending me to the Saipan airport for the trip back to Guam and Palau, I remembered that I didn't write down the formula for 9th chord. I just tell Pastor Francis that the octave is 2 steps higher for the thumb of the left hand to get the 9th chord.

I also taught him the complicated chords of Christian song Doxology. I think we in Palau are the only one using that chords for Doxology. I learned about it while attending the Seventh Day Adventist Saturday service in 2006. But what we are doing in Palau is more complicated but very pleasing to the ears. It's in key of D and I suggested to Pastor Francis to transpose it to key of C (2 steps lower) when practicing it and play it in key of D when he or other interested keyboard players are good enough to play it in key of D.

Pastor Francis is a very good student. He can absorb all those formula. I was flattered by his words--"I think it's God's will that you were able to come in this Pacific Area Fellowship so that we will learn a lot of things from you about music, esp. the keyboard/piano."

While we are doing caroling this December, Sister Loriz S. Navarro told me that the 2019 Pacific Area Fellowship will be held in Guam. I thought that this is the best chance for me to attend again this Fellowship if the date is after or the same as the date of 2019 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship to be held at Tumon, Guam in Feb. 14-24, 2019.

My wife Flor has said that I should not go there to save that airfare money for our vacation in Philippines in Oct. 2019. I might convince her if there will be 2 occasions for 1 trip.

I wrote a message to Bro. Ian Gajonera, who attended also the 2018 Pacific Area Fellowship where he is my roommate. I included in the message the program and schedule of the 2019 OZCC. Even the expenses of about $1,900.00 if I will be staying at Pacific Star Resort, the official hotel of the event. Also the expenses if we will be renting a summer house in Barrigada that includes van for 9 persons for $11.00 each person to bring us to the venue. That is one of the plan to save in accommodation.

Bro. Ian didn't answer my inquiry. It's Pastor Francis that explain to me that the date of the Fellowship is in the first Sunday of March. That day when I receive that info, I voted "No" to the poll of Eric Surangel Whipps to those who will go to the Guam OZCC. After voting, I am writing an explanation on why I will not able to make it but there is a message that I can't make a message anymore on that site. Eric has removed me seconds after I voted No.

Mohammad Manik Hossain told me at the last hour of the 2018 Palau National Chess Championship (Dec. 23, 2018) that "why only 6 of us going to Guam OZCC -- WFM Angelica Parrado, her 2 daughters Destiny and Angelil, Reece Reklai and Ksau Anthony Whipps." Manik got a 5-year USA visa because he's been to Palau for 13 years and he is the sole representative of Palau in the Tokyo Marathon in March 3, 2019. So after participating in the 2019 OZCC, he will proceed straight to Tokyo and prepare for the one of the most prestigious marathon in the world.

(1560) MUSIC AND ME -324 (July 12, 2018) PIANO FOR SALE -- KOREAN OWNER

PIANO FOR SALE --
KOREAN OWNER

Almost a year now, while I am going back to Palau Royal Resort from teaching piano/chess to a student in Airai, Vanessa, a gay beautician, talked to me hurriedly while I am driving. He is saying that there is a piano being sold for $1,000.00 and that if I am interested, call him at the Beauty Salon.

I called him and we set a date and time where he will come with me and check the piano at the owner's rented house about a kilo-meter away from the Beauty Salon.

When we go there, the house is locked and we can't see the piano from the window.

The place is familiar to me as we had a caroling in that place 2 years ago with Sis. Loriz, Sis. Arlene, Bro. Ruel Luis and Bro. Gilbert Navarro.

He don't know the phone number of the Korean owner of the piano so we just set a new date to check the piano. But he said the Korean owner is selling it for $1,000.00.

My plan is to get a bargain price for it and will put it at the Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale and I will look for a buyer to earn at least $200.00 if I can get it for $500.00 and sell it at $700.00.

It's December 2017--the month of sacrifice at PMCC and the start of caroling to the farthest provinces first starting on December 01.

In the middle of the month, we did a caroling to Vanessa's parlor. I intentionally leave last so that I can talk to him. He said the Korean owner has moved to Airai, about 5 kilo-meters from Koror. It seems that my plan will not happen.

But in May 09, 2018, I've got a phone call from a Filipino lady asking me to tune the Palau Filipino SDA Church piano. We set a date on the next day but when my piano student's lesson was cancelled on that same hour, I text her and said that I am available to tune it and I can come in 30 minutes to tune it. She said she will wait for me at the gym of Seventh Day Adventist Elementary school.

I brought my tuning hammer and other tools/assorted things that might be needed to tune a piano. We talked for a while before I tune the piano. She provided me with vacuum cleaner to clean the inside of the piano.

More than 2 hours of tuning when I noticed that the last string was snapped but it's not noticeable because it's sound is almost no sound if you will play it soft.

When our conversation was focused on the piano's former owner, she said the church bought it from a Korean for $800.00 (last bargain price). We realized that it's the same Korean owner of the piano that I was about to buy to make a couple of hundred dollars.

We agreed already earlier that I charge $75.00 if the piano hasn't been tuned for a least 5 years. She said that the other signatory to the check is not around and she will just give me the check at Palau Royal Resort when it is signed already.

In going out of the music room, I met at the gym Mommy Keiko, the grandmother of my 3 students Samantha Tsao (piano/guitar/ukulele), Jake Abellera (piano) and Cole Abellera (chess).

She asks what I am doing there. I said I just tuned a piano at Palau Filipino SDA Church. I told her that that piano is being sold to me for $1,000.00 a few months ago but I have never check the piano when the Korean owner moved to Airai. And the church bought it for $800.00.

Mommy Keiko is very surprised about the price. She asked me that if I find another piano for sale, buy it for her because she likes Samantha to have/play the real piano. She bought a Casio keyboard for Sam 2 years ago but the quality of its sound is not as good as Yamaha, so she bought a 61-key Yamaha keyboard for more than $500.00.

The Filipino lady came before 7:00 pm of the same day and gave me the Bank of Guam check which I deposited to my account at that bank.

(1422) MUSIC AND ME (July 06, 2017) CAROLING AWARDS TO BROTHERS AND SISTERS OF PMCC

CAROLING WARRIORS
Sis. Loriz Singca Navarro, left, gave a plaque and small gifts to the regular carolers in the month of sacrifice (December 2016) to (right-left) Bro. Allan Sauro, Bro. Jun Quintana, Sis Alyza Igharas, and Bro. Rolly Adducul (guitarist) during a ceremony in early 2017 at the Plenary Hall of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale. I was able to join them twice because I work from 7-11pm every night. There is no caroling in the daytime last year because of lack of workers of God, where Sis. Malou Paster and Bro. Ruel Luis were assigned at PMCC in Halang, Hagonoy, Bulacan (my hometown and province). I received the same award and a Jesus Christ (JC) t-shirt for being a caroling warrior in 2015.                           (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

  CAROLING AWARDS TO BROTHERS
           AND SISTERS OF PMCC

December 2016 was not ideal for me in as much as caroling for the Medical Mission of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale is concern.
We lack workers in the morning/afternoon caroling. Unlike in 2015 where Sis. Loriz and sis. Malou Paster together with Bro. Gilbert Navarro and Bro. Jefferson Taoingan can do caroling in the morning/afternoon in the far away provinces of Palau.
I was able to attend only 2 caroling in the month of Dec. 2016 because I work from 7-11 pm.
Back in 2015, we had good times and many unforgettable experiences in the caroling. I initiated to sing the Palauan version of "Feliz Navidad" and Palauans esp. kids like it!

                                     December 2015 Caroling

One of the highlights of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ in the 4th Watch (Palau Locale) is our caroling at Jungle River Cruise where there are 2 sleeping crocodiles. The Bangladeshi steward poke the eye of the sleeping crocodile and it open its eyes and mouth.

The PMCC Caroling started in Dec. 01, 2015 at Ngerchelong (pronounce Ngerelong –silent ch in Palauan language) State, the very far end of Palau. While in the car, we practice some songs and I suggest that we include in “Feliz Navidad” the Palauan version that is “Kikmal Oureng rak malungil Kurismas (3x), Maungil Becheserrak”, which means “We want to wish you a Merry Christmas (3x), and a Happy New Year.”It’s the start of a better caroling especially to kids as they can sing and feel the spirit of Christmas through singing with us in their native tongue.
But it’s a little frustrating as we get nothing from the first few houses that we do caroling in Ngerchelong. So we move to the next state and things get better.
I was able to join in the caroling if my teaching of my music students is at least at 4pm as we start at 10am and will travel for half hour. On Dec. 3, we go to the place where you can see the Stone Monoliths, which I have visited 22 years ago with my former employer Elena Sutton, her husband judge Larry Sutton driving the 4-wheel pick-up truck.
It’s different now as you have to book a sight-seeing tour at the entrance/office. When we are about to do caroling there, the Palauan in-charge recognized me and ask if I can teach him how to be good at chess. There are 2 American guys there that listen also to our singing. After two songs, they donate also for the Medical Mission of PMCC for the victims of Typhoon Lando in Philippines in October 2015. I gave the 3 guys my card and they are impressed with the information on the card.

This banana tree is about to be subdued by a strong and invasive vine/weed. I used to cut the base of those vines after/before going fishing at the lagoon in mid 1990's. After fishing, sometimes I've got more bananas than fish!       (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

At the Capitol of Palau in Melekeok. Many people thought that the capital city of Palau is Melekeok, including Brian Jones in his report of Oceania Chess Confederation's Development Plan. The Capitol Building, a smaller version of the White House in Washington, is in Melekeok. It's Capitol, not Capital.

On Dec. 18, 2015, we are about to do caroling at Fuji Restaurant at 12:30pm but it was delayed for a few minutes so we do caroling to a newly opened Mei Mei Gift Shop. The owner is not there and when we are looking at some of the items for sale, here comes the owner, the father of my former Chinese girl student Chian-Chian. After 2 songs, he gave $20.00 for support of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Gawad Kalinga Foundation for the victims of Typhoon Lando in Philippines. I asked him where is Chian-Chian. He said she is now in Taiwan for her studies. The name of the shop (Mei Mei) is the name of his other daughter.                              (Photo by Roberto Hernandez -- Taken by Sis. Malou Paster)

Before doing caroling to these 2 Palauan ladies that are employed at the Capitol, we were able to do a song to a guy sitting alone at the space where the lady, 2nd from right, is sitting. He said he's got only $11.00 in his wallet. We sing to him 2 songs and ask him where he works. He said, "I'm the Minister of Education." That's why he looks familiar to me! We have a meeting with him in Dec. 16, 2014 regarding Chess in Schools proposal with Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps, the current President of Palau Chess Federation and its Vice President Tito Cabunagan. It shows in the photo below, the Minister, Silton Soalabai, standing in the middle.

    BENEFITS OF CHESS FOR YOUTH
(Published at TBN Feb. 02-08, 2009)

Palau Chess Federation’s top 3 officers –President Eric Ksau Surangel Whipps, Vice President Tito Cabunagan and Secretary Roberto Hernandez, had a meeting with the top 5 officers of Palau Ministry of Education on Dec. 16, 2014 regarding the inclusion of chess as part of PE curriculum.

The short but very fruitful meeting might be the start of another breakthrough to make chess popular also in Palau like in the other 181-member countries of World Chess Federation (FIDE).

In this regard, Roberto is reprinting the February 02-08, 2009 issue of Tia Belau as follows:

               BENEFITS OF CHESS FOR YOUTH
JAMES Infiesto is a National Arbiter in the Philippines and one of the invited players in the 2nd Ambassador Marino Cup (Palau Invitational Chess Championship). He didn't make it but still continues his sharing of knowledge to Roberto Hernandez through emails.
THE FOLLOWING IS HIS INFORMATIVE EMAIL:
National Chess Federation of the Philippines President Prospero 'Butch' Pichay, Jr. hailed the move of Education Secretary Jesli Lapus to finally integrate chess in the grade school and high school curriculum starting this coming school year.
This will be a golden opportunity to develop new talents like 15-year-old prodigy Grandmaster Wesley So and catapult Philippines in world chess supremacy.
Please see below facts helpful on why I kept on campaigning that chess is a learning tool for Science, Math, Arts and subjects that deal with logical reasoning.
     Facts:
In a Texas study, regular (non-honors) elementary students who participated in a school chess club showed twice the improvement on non-chess players in Reading and Mathematics between 3rd and 5th grades on the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills.
A New Brunswick, Canada study, using 437 fifth graders split into 3 groups, experimenting with the addition of chess to the math curriculum, found increased gain in math problem-solving and comprehension proportionate to the amount of chess in the curriculum.
The Venezuela "Learning To Think Project", which trained 100,000 teachers to teach thinking skills, and which involved a sample of 4,266 2nd grade students, reached a general conclusion that chess, methodically taught, is an incentive system sufficient to accelerate the increase IQ in elementary age children of both sexes at all socio-economic levels.
Chess is found as required curricula in nearly 30 countries.
The mathematics curriculum in New Brunswick, Canada is a text series called "Challenging Mathematics" which uses chess to teach logic from grades 2 to 7.
Using this curriculum, the average problem-solving score of pupils in the province increased from 62% to 81%.
The province of Quebec, where the program was first introduced, has the best math marks in Canada and Canada scores better than the USA on international mathematics exam.
Former U. S. Secretary of Education Terrell Bell encourages knowledge of chess as a way to develop a preschooler's intellect and academic readiness.
The state of New Jersey passed a bill legitimizing chess as a unit of instruction within the elementary school curriculum.
A quote from the bill states "In countries where chess is offered widely in schools, students have exhibit excellence in the ability to recognize complex patterns and consequently excel in math and science..."
I am happy that Chess has been finally recognized in the Philippines as a tool to equip the youth, making the right decisions in life by enhancing their logical thinking.
This pave the way also for employment of chess players who can never let go of wood pushing because of the love of the sport.
At the end of the day, as parents, we ask ourselves what will be the benefits of the sport our children are into.
Career wise, chess is one of the basic foundations of my creative thinking in my magic presentations.
Anticipate the reactions of your audience, just like playing chess, anticipate and analyze the moves of your opponent.
     Hope you can accommodate.           James

Mr. James Infiesto is now an International Arbiter and performed magic during the 2013 World Youth Chess Championship in Abu Dhabi, UAE. He met there the 2 reps of Palau --Eric and Ksau Anthony Whipps.

      NOT ONLY A MUSICIAN/CHESS PLAYER
          BUT ALSO THRASH COLLECTOR

It's my first time to hear Sis. Adelaida Salvador to deliver a message at Morning Devotion of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale on Friday, May 05, 2017 from 5-6am.

I did the Scripture Reading that morning: Deuteronomy 28:31-40. I usually attend that every morning services on Wednesdays, where I deliver the message and on Fridays.

Sis. Adelaida is very good during Opening Prayers on Sunday's services, whether in Tagalog or English, especially when we have American, Japanese, Chinese or Palauan visitors.

Her verses used that morning were Acts 2:42-43; James 4:17; II Chronicles 7:14; Luke 24:49; and Acts 1:8.

Our resident Minister Sis. Loriz Singca Navarro added some Bible verses Philippians 3:14; I Timothy 1:19-20; Philippians 3:12-13 and 1 Corinthians 9:7.

As usual, after the Morning Devotion, I will proceed to Palau Track and Field oval to jog/run for half an hour doing 6 laps with half of it running and the other half is walking fast. During 1st, 3rd and 5th laps, I'm doing 10 push ups.

On my last (6th) lap, I pick up a small plastic bag and started picking the small and big thrashes that were eyesores to joggers/runners.

Halfway to my last lap walking slowly, I heard a voice from one of the regular runners/joggers in the oval saying, "So, you're not only a chess player/musician but also a thrash collector." I just smile and we had a conversation about environment. I know him by face. I forgot his name but he's one of the higher ranking official in Palau government.

I just learned on Jan. 18, 2018 that his name is Yukiwo Dengokl,  a former Palau Senator, when he had a dinner with his son at Waves Restaurant. He gave me $5.00 tip and we had a 15-minute conversation at Coral Bar of Waves Restaurant of Palau Royal Resort. He gave me an Asahi beer while we are talking.

He also said that if all the people are like me, Palau will be very clean. He specifically mention the ocean thrash that came from Indonesia that's clogging the Palau shorelines.

I mention to him that in some parts of the Philippines, they are banning the use of plastic bag and are using paper bags that are good for environment. I add also that Senator Surangel Whipps, Jr. introduces a bill at the Senate to use paper bags also in the stores. Their Surangel's Department Store and Supermarket are using a green plastic bags that decomposed after 7 months.

When I finished my 6th lap, he is also finished and ahead of me by a few meters.

I remember a few weeks ago when I'm collecting bigger thrash and the oval is wet due to rain that night, one old lady who is also a regular jogger/runner there shouted at me when I'm taking the large thrash of big black thrash bag that was brought their by dogs, "I should have taken a photo of you and post it at Facebook!"

I ate breakfast at Palau Royal Resort's canteen and took a 4-hour sleep from 8-12noon. Took my lunch at 1pm and went to town for an errand. When I returned to PRR, somebody park at my designated parking area. I park at the front of the door entrance of Dormitory 1 and played blitz chess with my teammate to 2016 World Chess Olympiad in Baku, Azerbaijan Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr.

Before 6pm, the security personnel Rhine Saburo shouted at me while playing chess, "Why you park like that. You're blocking the entrance to the Dorm!"

I replied, "Somebody parked at my space."
He replied back "with authority", "Then you should find a space and not there."

It's very easy to say, "It's vacant now. You can now move your car."

When I'm moving my car, he still saying a lot of words that make me pissed off --"Use your head, use your head."

I get off my car and said, "If you're doing your job, that space should not have been parked by other car of non-employee."

He return back and said, "I have many things to do. Do you think I will spend all my time just to watch your parking space?" And he slammed very hard the front left door of my car.

I know he's not doing many things. In his 8-hour job, 6 hours there are sitting jobs. Watching the parking areas will take only a few seconds.

Since then, I'm not talking to him. He used to come to Breeze Bar and make himself busy to show me that he is doing something especially when he is seeing me coming.

My disappointment with him was eased when I've got $40.00 tip from 5 different guests of Waves Restaurant and Breeze Bar.

I told him a story before that his brother, Father Rusk Saburo has been a guest at Image Restaurant where I played piano for 13 years, with 5 other priests. They have finished their dinner when they remember that they haven't pray before eating!
