BATUSHA TURTLESTEIN—THE OFFICIAL MASCOT OF THE 43^RD CHESS OLYMPIAD

          Georgia celebrated its 100 years of independence in May 26, 2018. The Chess Olympiad becomes part of the celebration within the year. The organizers came up with a contest for the Olympic Mascot, and it is an intellectual turtle named Batusha Turtlestein—the official mascot of the 43^rd Olympiad. Celebrating its 100 years of independence, Batumi City is a-washed with excitement on the forthcoming 43^rd Chess Olympiad!

I have registered 13 of the 14 Palau Chess Team members to 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia on July 5, 2018. The 14^th member is still on vacation and will be registered before the deadline of registration on July 23, 2018.

                In the Invitation to the 43^rd Chess Olympiad, the 89^th FIDE Congress states that “The registration of the teams to the Olympiad is open from 23 April to 23 July 2018. Please note that after this date and until 23 August, the registration of the federations will be at the organizer’s discretion and subject to a penalty fee of 100 EUR per person (late registration penalty). The changes made in the team composition or new registrations on April 23 to July 23 will be accepted without any penalty. After 23 August no new registrations or changes in the teams’ composition implying registrations of new participants will be accepted.

                The organizers have elaborated a special on-line system for the participants of the Olympiad and the Congress: https://batumi2018.fide.com/en/register. The link to the registration system is available on the official website of the Olympiad https://batumi2018.fide.com under the section “Registration”.

                The explanations on how to register the Federations to the system are given in a letter attached to this Invitation. Other explanations on the following steps of the Registration will follow. The Federations are asked to follow carefully steps of the Registration and to fill all the fields required by the system as all the demanded information is necessary to the Organizers.

                The accompanying persons of the teams may be registered by the Federations only. Registration of the Congress participants is the same as for the teams. The questions regarding the registration to the Olympiad should be addressed to Ms. Kermen Goryaeva at kemagoryaeva@batumichess.com

                To make the contact between the organizers and the federations easier, the Organizing Committee asks the Federations to nominate only one person in-charge of the registration procedure, who will register all the federation’s participants, their accompanying persons and Congress participants.

 IMPORTANT REMARKS: 

No participants, accompanying persons, delegates will be accepted to the Olympiad without having passed the registration through the official system, no accreditation will be given to them as well.

                Please note that the Organizers won’t accept any registration after 23 August 2018 for visas and security reasons. The Federations will receive their Accreditation Confirmation after they have registered to the Olympiad, as well as the name of the Hotel allocated to them and their accompanying persons.

                All participants to the Olympiad must be accredited and wear their accreditation when in the venues (Olympiad and the Congress). The federations must send to the organizers an identity picture of each participant that can be used for accreditation via the registration program. Please note that without an identity picture, the accreditation is not valid.

                If there is any problem with accreditation during the Olympiad, the participants should go to the accreditation center in the Sport Palace. 

The Congress participants should address the Congress Accreditation Center located in the Sheraton Hotel.”

                   Geoffrey Borg, right, visited Palau in Jan. 2014 with Asian Chess Federation Deputy President Toti Abundo, prior to the 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway. He came back in April of the same year to conduct FIDE Trainers’ Seminar where 14 local chess players gained FI, NI and DI titles. These titles are needed if anybody would like to be team captain in World Chess Olympiad. Kema Goryaeva, left, will be the Registration and Accreditation Officer for 2 Olympiads in a row (2016 Baku, Azerbaijan and 2018 Batumi, Georgia Chess Olympiads).

KEMA Goryaeva, the same lady in-charge of Registration and Accreditation in the 2016 WCO in Baku, Azerbaijan, is the same in-charge of this year’s World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia. The following is her email to me which I forwarded to the other members of Palau Chess Team:

  Dear Madame/Sir, We are glad to invite Palau to participate in the 43^rd Chess Olympiad, which will take place from 23^rd of September to 6^th of October 2018 in Batumi, Georgia. To proceed with the participation in the Olympiad, you are kindly requested to create an account in the Batumi Chess Olympiad Registration System. Your account will be used for: 1. Registration and accreditation of participants 2. Accommodation inquiries and 3.Travel information submission.

All information collected by the Batumi Chess Olympiad Registration System will be solely used for the purposes of organization of the Olympiad and the best possible service of your accreditation, accommodation and transportation needs. In order to create your Federation’s account and be enabled in the registration system, please follow the steps below:

Step 1 - Create your account Visit official website http://batumi2018.fide.com and click the Registration link. In the next page, click Create account link at the bottom. Here you are required to complete Name, Surname, your email address and your desired password for the system.

Step 2 - Activate account After completing Create account form and clicking Submit you will receive an activation email. This email includes an Activate your account link which you need to click. After successfully activating your account, you will receive a confirmation email.* Please make sure to also check your Spam folder and move the email to inbox if you find it there, in order to properly receive all future correspondence.

Step 3 - Send email with Federation & email Having successfully created your account, you need to send an email to kemagoryaeva@batumichess.com from the Federation’s official email as listed in FIDE’s official website https://ratings.fide.com/fide_directory.phtml. In the email you will state 1. The Federation’s name and 2. email address used for creating the account in the registration system, as in many cases third party emails are being used. 

Example of email:  Sender: georgianchess@yahoo.com ← Georgia’s official email in FIDE directory     Subject: Georgia ← Write Federation’s name as subject Content of Email: The email address used for the registration system on behalf of Georgia is [write email account used at step 1]

This step is important in order to ensure that only an officially approved account will be enabled for registration on behalf of your Federation. Step 4 - Validation and notification After validation and confirmation of your account, you will be notified in order to proceed with the registration of your Federation. I have printed the 25-page invitation from the organizers for future reference.

The final round of 2018 PRCC will be played this Sunday, April 29^th with Bobot Tan already clinched the title with another perfect slate when he defeated Mohammad Manik Hossain last week. My last opponent is Morton Sawaichi; Angel Magno vs. Cyril; Leif vs. Jennifer; Bheng vs. Kitalong and Angie will have a BYE.

 In the Junior Division, Angelil Sisior and Gian Gabriel Claronino are fighting it out for the top spot with Angelil having to win her last 2 games vs. her younger sister Destiny and my piano/chess student Nicholas Nehez. Gian needs to win also over Destiny to get a chance at the title. Awarding of medals will commence after the 9^th round is finished. 

Meanwhile, at the PMA Chess in School 2^nd Batch Blitz Chess Tournament, top seed Ksau Anthony Whipps clinched also the title with a round to spare having won all of his 15 matches and drew one against Japanese girl Himari Tono (8 wins, 2 draws, 3 losses), who is currently in 3^rd place trailing Secheriang Senior (10 wins, 4 losses). The last few games will be played on Monday, April 30.

    TOP 3 FINISHERS OF 2016 PRCC

                    (Part 2)

In the final and 3^rd week of 2016 Palau Rapid Chess Championship (Part 2), 7^th seed Jeff Balbalosa scored a total of 7 points to add another feather in his cap in capturing the 2^nd edition of rapid chess tilt held on Sunday, July 10 at Bethlehem Park, where top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. (1935) and 4^th seed Paquito ‘Pax’ Suringa, Jr. (1785) having a basketball game with different teams just a few meters from the venue.

                Third seed Roberto Hernandez succumbed to Rustum Cabuso in the penultimate round in 56 moves of Dutch Defense but outplayed Dennis Gonzales in the final round in 39 moves of Sicilian Defense (Lowenthal and Kalashnikov Variations) to finish 1^st runner-up with 6 points.

                Second seed Tito Cabunagan’s opponent in the final round (Pax) didn’t show up and scored a full point by default to clinch 3^rd place with 5.5 points. The top 3 finishers will receive medals.

2. Photos of your players maybe at some of the important and strong tournaments with information on who is on the photo, which tournament, etc

3. Interesting facts and statistics of your teams in the previous Olympiads.

4. if possible, videos of your team players at any of the tournaments that you may consider interesting to share with our followers.

5. "Hello, Baku" short video message from your team members, which will contain this greeting in the beginning and some words to support the Olympiad.

These all or some of the information that you can send we are going to publish on the official website in order to promote the Olympiad in Baku, your national teams and game of chess in general.
