(1467) MY THOUGHTFUL CHESS/PIANO STUDENT

MY THOUGHTFUL
CHESS/PIANO
STUDENT

Prior to the start of 2017 Palau National Chess Championship, she asked me to teach her son chess/piano. Just in time before the start of the 2017 PNCC, I listed him as one of the contestant in the Junior Division. Right after our first meeting, he gave me a rubber chess bracelet.          (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

I started to teach him chess/piano using my own keyboard as their piano is still in the USA. When the PNCC starts, it's a record-breaking turnout of junior players--10, with the Sisior sisters-Angelil, Destiny Sisior, and Kyarii being the top 3 seeds. The others are him, Aome Angeles, Reece Reklai, Gian Paloma, Gian Gabriel Claronino, Michael and Rommel Gulla. In the final round against Angelil, where he lost to the eventual champ, he gave all the junior contestants the same rubber chess bracelet that he gave me. A sign of thoughtfulness very rarely seen from a 9-year-old boy.

After coming back from 2-week Christmas vacation in the USA, he gave me a very nice wooden music box that plays the Beatles' song "Yesterday" whenever you are winding it. If you wind it fast, the song will play fast also. He said it is my favorite song. When I said to him that there are songs "Yesterday", "Today" and "Tomorrow", it elicit a smile from his grandfather.

The grandma of him, at right, made some cookies while I'm teaching him piano/chess one Wed. afternoon and she gave me 5 pieces of still hot home made cookies. I'm diabetic but I can't resist to eat at least one cookie! she said they are getting fat because her mom is very good at cooking.

2019 Palau Blitz Chess Championship 1st week.

It's unfortunate that the 2019 Palau Blitz Chess Championship didn't push through on Jan. 13 where he and his friend Paul Tucker could have been participants. It was postponed on Jan. 20 and finally push through on Jan. 27. Thirty six players participated but him and Paul have earlier commitments on Jan. 20th and 27th.

In the 2018 Palau Blitz Chess Championship, she and Jennifer Angeles, a Math/Chess Teacher at the first Chess in School in Palau at Palau Missionary Academy-- did the Ceremonial First Move.

He played against my teammate in 2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway--Gladys Anne Paloma, who has a rating of 1452. He beat her in just 7 moves to become the shortest game of the 2018 Palau Blitz Chess Championship.

2018 1st Surangel Chess Team Tournament --Yellow Team -- Captain-Roberto Hernandez, 2nd from right, Angelil Sisior (Women), right, him, 2nd from left (Junior) and Derrick "Dims" Alexander, left, Board 2. Other members of Yellow Team are Morton Sawaichi, Mohammad Manik Hossain, Glen Navarroza, Noro Naruo and Spis Gordon.

This is one of the rare time that a chess student is aware of every position. After reviewing/playing the game of Browne vs. H. Smith (London, 1932) till black's 13th move, we reach this position. He noticed that there is no black bishop on d6 in the diagram. I have to consult my best friend CM Joselito Marcos and he found out that the game has been updated already with a black bishop now on d6.

I took a photo of a rainbow that is about to "fade" at the balcony/terrace of his house, which is a very nice place to practice/play chess with great view, breeze, and quiet.

Before leaving for a new destination in Peru, I took a photo with Ester, from Guatemala, to say goodbye after signing some papers of the latest piano/chess tutoring of him in early May 2019.
I have improved my Spanish language knowledge because of Ester. Philippines had been colonized by Spaniards for 100 years and Spanish is being taught when I was in high school in 1968-1972.

He is the Gold Medalist in the Junior Division of 1st Surangel Chess Team Tournament. He is undefeated in 9 games. Our Yellow Team lost its first 2 matches but never taste defeat again in the 3rd -- 9th round matches. He averted a shutout in the 2nd round when all of us lost our games except him to save the day for us.
