JUNIOR DIVISION HAS
10 PLAYERS NOW
RARELY did the Junior Division of any Palau National Chess Championship reached 10 players or more. That’s why most of those events are double round-robin. Not anymore! This year’s record-breaking turnout is an effect of Palau having its first Chess in School at PMA that started in Aug. 30, 2017. Aside from the 3 Sisior sisters (Angelil, Destiny and Kyarii), the 7 kids are first timers in Palau NCC. They are Aome Angeles, Gian Paloma, Michael Gulla and his brother Rommel, Reece Reklai, my music and chess student Nicholas Nehez and the last one who joined in the 3rd round, Gian Gabriel Claronino.
I have to adjust the Round 1-9 to accommodate Gian Gabriel and take out the BYE. With Gian Gabriel able to play Aome, whose opponent Destiny did not make it, the round 5 will become normal after Gian Gabriel played Reece and Destiny to play Aome (3rd) and Reece vs. Destiny in the 4th round.
Other 4th round games are Michael vs. Nicholas; Gian vs. Kyarii; Aome vs. Angelil and Rommel vs. Gian Gabriel. The first-mentioned names will play the white pieces.
In the Top 12 Division, Rustum Cabuso seized the leadership after subduing 3rd seed Jeff Balbalosa for his 3 straight win. Paquito Suringa, Jr. won his first game over Leif Toribiong while I lost to Angelo Salvadora and the last game of the day lasted till 7:45pm between top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and Bobot Tan. When I leave them to teach Kyle Soriano guitar, the position is equal. Even when I check them again, it’s still equal. Before going to the Evangelistic Night of Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th Watch) Palau Locale, they are not there anymore. I just learned that Cyril lost when he blundered in the last move that allows Bobot to mate him with Cyril ahead by a whole rook. This makes the 2017 PNCC Top 12 Division more interesting.
Round 4 pairings: Bobot vs. Jun Mahor; Dennis vs. Cyril; Robert vs. Jojo Escapatoria; Leif vs. Angelo and Jeff vs. Paquito.
In the women’s division, Angelica Magno scored her first victory via conquest of Jennifer Angeles with an overwhelming advantage while Angie Parrado and Baby Edna Mission drew their game. The last 3 games of this division are as follows: Bheng vs. Joan; Jennifer vs. Bheng and Angelica vs. Angie.
In the Reserves Division, Wilson Barrameda likewise scored his first victory by trumping Neph Macasaet, who said that Nilo de Jesus confirmed his participation in the Reserves Division and to play in the 4th round as many games as he can. This makes that division a double round-robin event with Neph vs. Nilo in the first round; Nilo vs. Joel in the 2nd round and vs. Wilson in the 3rd round. The Reserve Division is now a week longer that the Women’s and will conclude on Nov. 12.
A dozen masters took part, but the tournament caters to amateurs and club players of all levels. One 1837-rated player, Jon Loman, was awarded the special prize for the “most beautiful game of the tournament”, a 21-move miniature. He’s Swedish but went for Danish Gambit against his German opponent, and capped a king-hunt with a flourish: 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. c3 dxc3 4. Bc4 Nf6 5. e5 d5 6. exf6 dxc4 7. Nxc3 Qxd1 8. Kxd1 gxf6 9. Nd5 Na6 10. Nxf6 Ke7 11. Nh5 Ke6 12. Nf3 Bc5 13. Re1+ Kd6 14. Bf4+ Kc6 15. Ne5+ Kb5 16. a4+ Kb4 17. Kc2 Bf5+ 18. Kc1 Be6 19. Bd2+ Kb3 20. Re3+ Bxe3 21. Ra3#.
Danish Gambit is my favorite opening. I’ve won a lot of games using this dynamic opening over Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr., Menandro Manuel, Jimmy Valenzuela and many other Palau top players.
