THE LOGO OF 2018 WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD
A lot of souvenir items were given during the
2014 World Chess Olympiad in Tromso, Norway from the bidders to host the 2018
WCO—Batumi, Georgia and South Africa. There are also souvenir items given by
2016 Olympiad host Baku, Azerbaijan. Another former Soviet country won the bid
to host the 2018 event—Georgia. I’ve got a t-shirt of 2018 WCO and I will wear
it in next year’s Olympiad.

PENULTIMATE ROUND OF
2016-2017 P. N. C. C.
DEFENDING champion and top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr.
will try to clinch his 3rd straight Palau National Chess
Championship title with a victory over 10th seed Manuel ‘Jun’ Mahor,
Jr. in the penultimate round of this 2016-2017 series. His round 3 opponent,
Angelica Parrado-Sisior, has flown to Auckland, New Zealand as one of the two
representatives of Palau in the 2017 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship, together
with 3rd seed Tito Cabunagan. It will start on Jan. 14 and will
commence on the 20th of January.
I
check the website of 2017 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship to see the list of
participants. There are 116 contestants mostly from host country New Zealand
and Australia. I saw the flag of Palau and Tito’s name as 77th seed but
there is no other Palau rep listed. I don’t know what happened to Angie. She
might have missed the flight or registered late. The 1st round will
start on Sun. Jan. 15.
***I checked the Women's Division of OZCC and Angelica Parrado is listed as 14th seed among 24 participants.***
Parrado-Sisior
has finished the event with a default victory over 4th seed Jeff
Balbalosa, who spent the New Year 2017 in Philippines when his father passed
away, and finished the tilt with 2.5 points from 2 wins, a draw and 6 losses.
Tito finished a victory better with a 3-1-5 slate.
If
Jeff will not make it on Sunday, Jan. 15, 7th seed Paquito ‘Pax’
Suringa, Jr. will clinch the 3rd spot even if he would lose his
final round game against 9th seed Gonzalo ‘Jojo’ Escapatoria, Jr. as
his would be total of 5 points is unreachable for mine, Mahor and 5th
seed Rustum Cabuso.
Only
3 games were played in the resumption of play at Bethlehem Park on Jan. 08
–Jojo vs. Jun, in which Jun won to keep his hope alive for at least a tie for 4th
place if he would win his game against Cyril. A tough task but possible as he
dealt 6th seed Allan Alcid his first and only loss of the tourney in
a game held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1.
The
2nd game was between Angie and Rustum in which the former had a rook
and a pawn against Rustum’s bishop, knight and a pawn. There comes a time where
Angie has to choose of exchanging her rook for the bishop and knight and be
left with a c pawn against a queen, which is a draw if Angie can put his king
in front of the pawn or try to test Rustum’s skill in mating her with a bishop
and a knight. I was about to count 50 moves to declare it a draw if Rustum
can’t mate Angie within that number of moves.
But
Angie chose the first option and was unable to put her king in front of the
pawn as Rustum cleverly blocked Angie’s king in reaching that pivotal square.
Angie resigned and there’s still time for Cyril and Rustum to play their 8th
round game. I gave to them pens and score sheets. It’s getting dark and they
used the light from street lamp before I leave them to have dinner at PRR and
attend the Evangelistic Night at Pentecostal Missionary Church of Christ (4th
Watch) Palau Locale at 7:30pm. When I passed at Bethlehem Park, I saw nobody
playing anymore. I will just text them to know the results in which Cyril is
ahead in position and one pawn advantage.
A
loss or a draw by Cyril in the final round will make Alcid the new champion and
the first qualifier to the 2018 World Chess Olympiad in Batumi, Georgia. A draw
will have Cyril and Allan tied at first place but by using the 3 tiebreakers
will favor Allan because he defeated me and I defeated Cyril. Their game was a
draw so the Direct Encounter (winner over the other) tiebreak can’t be applied.
Cyril stated that he will try to get this title as an assurance of being a team
member in Georgia Olympiad. And he will just leisurely play in the 2017 PNCC
where the top 4 finishers will join this event’s champion.
