(1254) 1991 1st BBBC CHESS TOURNEY (TBN-Aug. 29, 2016)

AWARDING CEREMONY INVITATION
Winners and participants were treated to a lunch and awarding of cash prizes and certificates by the organizing BBBC Chess tourney with Muntinlupa Municipal Mayor Ignacio Bunye as special guest who gave the awards.

       1991 1st BBBC CHESS TOURNEY

A year prior to coming to Palau in Feb. 04, 1992, Roberto Hernandez played in 2 local chess tournaments—the 1991 Berean Bible Baptist Church Chess Tourney and the 1991 South Manila Chess Club Open Chess Tournament.

The first one, a 5-round Swiss system event, was held from Feb. 24-March 24, 1991 while the 7-round Swiss system SMCC Open was held from April 27-May 05, 1991.

Because the venue of BBBC Chess tourney is just a 5-minute walk from his residence, Roberto was able to join this tourney that draws 20 contestants namely (in alphabetical order) 1. Angelo Agbuya 2. Roberto Biron 3. Salvador Caro 4. Ferdie Casabuena 5. Henry Casabuena 6. Ramon Cordova 7. Angelo Cuison 8. Larry Dungo 9. Gary Galang 10. Roberto Hernandez 11. Junior Malate 12. Ryan Jay Malate 13. Mark Marasigan 14. Ariel Ofilada 15. Ramon Ragas 16. Dennis Rey 17. Francisco Rodriguez 18. Charlie Tagoc 19. Bert Tamosa 20. Leandro Valdez.

Tagoc and Tamosa are staff of BBBC; Ferdie and Henry Casabuena are brothers; Galang is the practice partner of Hernandez; Agbuya is the regional chess champion and Ragas is the top seed with a national rating of 2025.
The first round fits No. 1 vs. No. 11; No. 2 vs. No. 12 etc. and Hernandez (No. 10 vs. No. 20 Leandro Valdez).
THE MOVES:
 Valdez, Leandro - Hernandez, Roberto (1875) [B09]
1991 1st BBBC Chess Tourney (1), 24.02.1991

Being a comeback kid, Hernandez won in the 2nd round (no record of game) and trounced Junior Malate in the 3rd round.
THE MOVES:
 Malate, Junior - Hernandez, Roberto (1875) [A86]
1991 1st BBBC Chess Tourney (3), 10.03.1991

Another win over Tamosa in the penultimate round puts Roberto in the running for title.

THE MOVES:
 Hernandez, Roberto (1875) - Tamosa, Bert [C42]
1991 1st BBBC Chess Tourney (4), 17.03.1991
            1. e4 e5 2.Nf3 d6 3.Bc4 Bg4 4.Nc3 Nf6 5.h3 Bh5 6.d3 c6 7.Bg5 Be7 8.g4 Bg6 9.Qd2 Qb6 10.0–0–0 d5 11.Bxf6 dxc4 12.Bxg7 Rg8 13.Bxe5 Nd7 14.dxc4 Bc5 15.Qxd7+ Kf8 16.Bf6 h5 17.Rd6 Re8 18.Rhd1 hxg4 19.Qxe8+     1–0

The final round is controversial as the arbiter let the crucial game of Ragas vs. Hernandez to be played not simultaneously with the other crucial game involving Agbuya, who is just watching the game instead of playing with his opponent and should not wait for the result of Ragas-Hernandez match.
When Hernandez defeated Ragas, Agbuya needs to win his last round game to clinch the title as a draw or a loss would mean losing the title to Hernandez. And he did!

THE MOVES: Ragas, Ramon (2025) - Hernandez, Roberto (1875) [A86]
1991 1st BBBC Chess Tourney (5), 24.03.1991

At the end of the game, the arbiter checked the remaining time in Hernandez clock and it is just 7 seconds remaining in his 1st runner-up finish in any local tournament. Galang finished 4th.
Valdez is complaining, “Why is it that I’ve defeated Hernandez and he finished 1st runner-up?” The answer is, how did he finish the tourney after winning his first round match? Hernandez won all his last 4 games after losing to him in the first round.

The organizers requested Hernandez to play piano as a special number during the awarding ceremony. He played “Dahil Sa Isang Bulaklak” (Because of a Flower) in the ceremony held on March 31, 1991 where Hernandez came with his wife Flor and 6-year-old daughter Karen.

A small cash prize and a trophy were awarded to Hernandez by Muntinlupa Municipal Mayor Ignacio Bunye. Flor keeps the cash! Hernandez keeps the trophy. Karen had a photo showing the trophy.
