Oceania Zonal Chess President Gary Bekker participated in the inaugural 2006 Palau Invitational Chess Championship. During that event, he stated that Flavin 'Matlab' Andres, left, will be the next chess icon in Palau, when he sees Matlab's dedication and enthusiasm to promote chess especially to kids. Matlab participated in the 2005-2006 Rapid Chess Championship where one of the top seeds Jose Omega, right, clash in mental combat with comeback kid Gerry Sermeno.
