HAVE you ever heard of a 29-player double round-robin
rapid chess tournament? It means each player must play 56 games! This will
happen in Palau during the opening rounds on October 23, 2005 at Jean’s
Boutique and Store.
Aside
from this, there will be a 12 years and under Division, a Christmas Blitz Chess
Festival on Dec. 18, where the Christmas party of Knights and Rooks Chess Club
(Palau) will be held. Blitz chess competition will also be held after the
completion of regular games or defending on the number of participants.
During
the registration ($10.00), an extra $5.00 will be solicited to be added to the
fund for Palau to pay its first annual membership fee to FIDE (World Chess
Federation) in the amount of $476.00, or 600 Swiss Francs. After fulfilling
this obligation, Palau can now send players to Oceania Zonal Chess
Championships, World Chess Olympiads and other FIDE sanctioned international
tournaments/events.
Oceania
Zone President Gary Bekker pledged $100.00 while Manny Kimpo of Pinoy Express
Remittance will donate $100.00 likewise. Tutii Joe Chilton will donate the
$50.00 that he will receive for making wooden trophies. Roberto Hernandez will
also donate $50.00.
Morton
Sawaichi will donate $35.00 from his $50.00 brilliancy prize; $30.00 from Gene
Pastrana; $5.00 each from Susan Andres, Francis Temaungil, Flavin Andres, John
Pastrana, Jess Gomez, Manny Nedic and Chilton. Eight dollars was collected from
Ivan II Chess Computer rentals.
A
total of 10 newcomers will join this event – 1. Edwin Eti 2. Joeven delos
Santos 3. Felix Lapitan 4. Rodiante Balagso 5. Jess Gomez 6. William Blasquino
7. Ernie Mijares 8. Rogelio Menor 9. John Pastrana and 10. Lito Salas. It is
also the first time that Francis Temaungil and Flavin Andres will join in a
competition while Em-R de Vera will try to play in the Senior Division after
being Palau’s 3rd Junior Champion recently.
In
the 12 and under division, the contestants are 1. John Farinas 2. Zyron Singson
3. Geaury Ken Pastrana 4. Jielton Cabierte and 5. Arnel Vingcoy. Ivan II Chess
Computer will be added to the list. There must be at least 8 contestants in
this division for this to push through.
The

The
time format for this event is 30 minutes for each player to finish the game.
Chess annotation is optional. The venue, Jean’s Boutique and Store, can’t
accommodate 30 players inside so a tent will be installed at the store’s
parking lot – courtesy of James dela Cruz.
Players
can play as many as 3 games every Sunday. Special games can be arranged for
those players with complicated working schedule.
A
4-player simultaneous exhibition will be held by Roberto Hernandez against
available players before the start of the 1st round at Jean’s
Boutique and Store’s parking area.
