                     SHAKE-UP AT
      PALAU TOP 10 FIDE RATINGS

THE February 2015 edition of FIDE ratings of Palau active chess players is now published at www.fide.com with major shake-up in the Top 10 players. If a player is inactive for a year, his/her name is not published until he/she joins a rated tournament again as what happens to No. 6 Rustum Cabuso (1739 rating) and No. 7 Eugenio Pastrana (1722).
Inactive for 2 years because of retirement, Menandro ‘Boy’ Manuel is back in Palau for at least 2 months and was able to compete in the 2014-2015 Palau National Chess Championship’s first 3 weeks (Nov. 16, 23, 30) before going back to Philippines in Dec. 05, 2014.
He played his first game vs. Jeff Balbalosa on Sat. Nov. 15 in his room and drew their game because of technicality. He lost to Roberto Hernandez the next day (Nov. 16) in the Opening day of the event. He drew again with Paquito Suringa, Jr. on Nov. 20 (Thu) in their game held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1. Manuel clobbered 10th seed Rafael Paloma on Nov. 23 and his last game against Tito Cabunagan on Nov. 30 is also a victory. His 4 un-played games were recorded as - + and didn’t affect his overall result. Thus, his rating of 1852 has been reduced to 1847 but still enough to regain the no. 1 in February ratings.
Hernandez (1815) played the most number of games (6 wins and 2 losses) in the event. He gained 25 rating points and now at 2nd with 1840. Eventual champion Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. (1795) played 5 games (all victories) and gained 42 points to trail Roberto with just 3 points at 1837, the same rating of inactive Jose Celiz.
Cabunagan lost 8 points and now settled at 5th with 1817 from his previous 1825. Next at 6th is the ever-improving Jeffrey Balbalosa, being projected to be the next National Master of Palau. For finishing 3rd in the Top 10 Division of 2014 PNCC, he gained 17 points and dislodged Candidate Master Bernardo Garcia, who struggled in this PNCC and lost 26 points. Jeff Sept. rating of 1721 is now 1738 while Garcia slips from 1758 to 1732.
Suringa, Jr. (1701) played only 3 games –lost to Roberto, won over Paloma and drew with Manuel, but he gained a minimal 5 points to get back at no. 8 followed by Dennis Gonzales (1701), who lost 21 points and now at no. 9 with 1680.
WELCOME BACK TO THE TOP 10 – WNM Angie Parrado! She gained 27 points for defending her women’s plum. From 1615 to 1642 and now she is ready for 2015 Oceania Zonal Chess Championship in Norths Sydney, Australia on July 04-10, 2015.
At 11th is Nilo de Jesus (1624), who gained 14 points for his only game (a win) vs. Garcia followed by Open Division’s champ Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jr., (1599), who’s got 9 points for his feat and now 12th at 1608. Paloma (1612) has the most points (42) deducted for his struggling performance (now at 1570).
Rounding up the 14th and onwards positions are 14. Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. (1547) 15. Eugene Labarda (1525) 16. Ksau Anthony Flores Whipps (1519) 17. Baby Edna Mission (1516) 18. Neph Macasaet (1510). 19. Destiny Sisior (1499) 20. Manuel Mahor, Jr. (1489) 21. Gladys Anne Paloma (1466).              Newcomers Felix Oling and Marcial Santander both have 1465 initial rating. Junior Division champion Angelil Sisior (1423) gained 29 points. The surprise of all is Robert Godwin Sola, who’s got an amazing initial rating of 1341 because he played the most number of games among all contestants –20! He is always present during all Sundays of the event.
But the most points earned—144, is by Ultei Angelie Surangel. From her previous 1105 to the whooping 1249, is a result of her 3rd place finish in the Junior Division.
