OFF TO A GOOD START --
8 GAMES PLAYED
ON SUNDAY, March 30, a total of 8 games were played in
the resumption of 2014 Palau Open Chess tournament which is now a single
round-robin event with Pool A and B compose of 11 players each. In Pool A,
newcomer Neph Macasaet played his first serious chess tournament game in Palau
against Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. and lost easily after being taught by Roberto
Hernandez on how to write chess moves.
He
lost another one to top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. and his last game against
Roberto is also a setback. After his 3rd game, he was taught again
how to play the Sicilian Defence (both the Najdorf and Dragon Variation) and
the dreaded Danish Gambit where 4 pawns were sacrificed to gain rapid
development of white’s pieces.
Candidate
Master Bernardo Garcia and Dennis Gonzales played the longest game of the day
and ended in a fighting draw while Pacenos took the early lead in Pool A by
whipping Gladys Anne Paloma.
In
Pool B, Tito Cabunagan bounced back from a first round loss to John Joseph
Pabiona and scored 2 whole points over Baby Edna Mission and WNM Angelica
Parrado.
The
8th game of the day is between Jeff Balbalosa and Parrado where the
former emerged as victor and put the latter to the cellar.
Due
to the coming typhoon on the eve of Sunday, April 6, there might be limited
number of players who will come to play. Alfredo Pacenos, Jr. is coming and if
no other opponent in the same pool will come, he will play with Roberto as they
are in the same Pool A.
Paquito will come with Roberto
and is ready for his first game. His rating plunged last year because he scored
only 2.5 points in the 2013 Palau National Chess Championship. It’s time to
gain some rating points as he has practiced a lot against Roberto.
Roberto and Paquito came at Bethlehem Park at 2:30 pm and
no other players are around. There are no basketball games at Palau
National Gym due to the storm. They just practiced blitz chess while
waiting. Pacenos came and left again to do some errands.
He played with Roberto in the only official game of the
day and lost in just 16 moves of Danish Gambit, an opening which he is
not much familiar.

Jose Celiz came at 5pm not knowing that it is now
round-robin tournament. It's too late for him and Paquito to play a
3-hour game. Dennis came at 5:30pm but just dropped by with his wife.
