(517) ARNOLD RIVERA JOINS PRR CHESS TILT (TBN-Sept. 07-13, 2007)

        ARNOLD RIVERA JOINS
            PRR CHESS TILT

AFTER two months of hesitation to join the ongoing Palau Royal Resort rating chess tournament, cafeteria chief cook Arnold Rivera finally confirm
his participation in the halfway mark of the double round-robin tourney.

He underwent an intensive training and practices with the other participants and top seed Roberto Hernandez noticed his cautious play which is the standard practice of seasoned masters of today.

The saying in chess, "The slower you move, the faster you'll learn" is very much applicable to him. He will try to catch up by playing everyday and if his schedule permits, two games in a day.

Zaldy Ranopa scored 5 straight victories to dislodge Dennis Lara at 4th spot as he got the best record of the tilt with only one loss.

He drubbed Tony Penas in 31 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening and outwitted Excalibur Chess Computer in 56 moves of Bishop Opening.

He clobbered Manny Dulay in just 27 moves of another QPO and outlasted Randy Sioson in 53 moves of Slav Defence.

Abraham 'Abe' Francisco lost 2 games in a row before scoring a point over first round leader Jaime Guevarra in 30 moves of Bishop Opening.

He lost to Nino Flores in 36 moves of Sicilian Defence and Flores took the solo 8th spot following his 3-win surge.

Laurence Abuton dealt Tony Penas his 4th loss in 57 moves of Two Knights Defence as he tied Ranopa at 4th place after crushing the weaker chess machine Excalibur in 38 moves of Sicilian Defence in the last game of the week.

Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. followed suit of Arnel Pama's win over Ivan II Chess Computer and scored his only 3rd win in 30 moves of Sicilian Defence (Dragon Variation).

It put Ivan II deeper into the cellar with 7 setbacks against 0 win.
