          SCORES 7 STRAIGHT

ERSWHILE TOP chess player of Palau Menandro 'Boy' Manuel scored 7 straight victories after losing his first to Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, Jr. in the opening round and drawing with Angie Parrado in his 2nd game to lead the 2011 Palau National Chess Championship held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 on Sunday, July 17.

After defeating 2 women contestants Ann Acebron and Karen Lee, Manuel whipped Mohammad Manik Hossain, Rudel Roxas, Gonzalo Escapatoria, Jeff Balbalosa in 42 moves of Pirc Defence and the previously undefeated Jose Celiz in 41 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening.

He played as many games as he can because he will be having a 3-week vacation starting on Tuesday, July 19.

Third seed Roberto Hernandez suffered his 2nd consecutive losses when he blundered away a whole rook and lost to top seed Cyril Tomas Montel, Jr. in more than 50 moves of Bird's Opening.

Hernandez then scored an easy win over Parrado in 41 moves of Danish Gambit but lost again to Jeff Balbalosa in more than 60 moves of Sicilian Defence for a poor 1-3 start.

Celiz defeated previously unbeated Tito Cabunagan in 34 moves of Modern Defence.

Tito halved the point with Cyril being a pawn behind in difficult rook and pawns endgame in 60 moves of Queen's Gambit Declined.

Celiz defeated Angie Parrado on Saturday's game at 3:00 pm in 43 moves of another Modern Defence.

But Angie scored one win over Gonzalo 'Jojo' Escapatoria in 39 moves of Four Knights Defence.

On the other hand, Jojo scored his first win over Jeff Balbalosa in 29 moves of Giocco Piano.
