            GRANTED TURKISH VISA

PREPARATIONS are now in full swing after the 4 members of Palau Chess Team to 2012 World Chess Olympiad were granted their Turkish visas on July 26, 2012 after submitting those documents on July 19.

Board 1 player Roberto Hernandez, Head of Delegation and probable Board 2 player Elizabeth Manuel, Board 3 Bernardo Garcia and Board 4 Menandro Manuel were granted Turkish visas to participate in the biannual Chess Olympiad to be held in Istanbul, Turkey from August 27-September 10, 2012.

Earlier this month, Tito Cabunagan withdrew due to job schedule conflict while the 8thmember of the team, Mohammad Manik Hossain is still waiting for the approval of his employer (Uchel Tmetchul) to allow him to go. If Manik can make it, he will be Board 2 and Elizabeth will be reserve.

Other members of Palau team are Jamie Kenmure of Australia as Team Captain and Mr. Jan Berglund of Sweden as Delegate. A proxy letter is required by World Chess Federation (FIDE) for Mr. Berglund to be allowed to be Palau’s Delegate to the 84th FIDE Congress.

It is needed because Palau’s Permanent Delegate to FIDE is Hernandez even though Mr. Berglund has been Palau’s Delegate in the 2008 WCO in Dresden, Germany and 2010 WCO in Khanty-Mansiysk, Russia.

He don’t need a visa to go to Turkey because it’s a European country and it will be required if he will stay there for more than 3 months.

Most members of teams want to make the first participation of Palau in an Olympiad a memorable one. Souvenir items, business cards, brochures of Palau Royal Resort, Palau Pacific Resort and Palau Visitors Authority will be given to their opponents before the start of every game.

A jacket, with colors of Palau’s flag is now being designed for the team. The back part will have “Palau” written below the yellow circle. At the left side of the front will have “Palau Chess Team – 2012 World Chess Olympiad” and individual name of the members.

All the members of the team would like to thank the management of Palau Pacific Resort for sponsoring polo shirts with PRR logo for the members of the Palau Chess Team to the 2012 World Chess Olympiad.

The Filipino Community in Palau (TFCP) will host a farewell party for the Philippine Embassy at Sea Passion Hotel on July 29 (Sunday) before the closing down of the Embassy on July 31, 2012.

Philippine Ambassador to Palau, Honorable Ramoncito Marino, the number one chess supporter in Palau, will also hold the 2nd part of the awarding of the Outstanding Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) in Palau. The first one was held in June 12, 2009 where Roberto Hernandez, musician of Palau Royal Resort, has been chosen as one of the awardees in the field of music and entertainment.

Amante C. Caballero, Hernandez’ best friend in Palau for 19 years, has been chosen in the last few days before the awarding. Many more qualified outstanding OFWs will be given recognition on Sunday.

During the awarding, a special posthumous award was given to Engineer Amado Fulgencio, the Chief Engineer of Palau Royal Resort, who died of electrocution with 2 others on July 26 while on vacation in Philippines. He has done so much at PRR and the certificate was received by Hernandez in his behalf.
