(226) CYRIL SWEPT TITO, MANUEL SWEPT CYRIL

ANOTHER DANISH GAMBIT VICTIM
One of Roberto Hernandez' pet defence is the Danish Gambit. Against newcomer to Palau Jose Celiz, right, he employed the Danish Gambit again and prevailed in 31 moves. Be prepared next time, Jose! (Photo by Roberto Hernandez)

CYRIL SWEPT TITO,
MANUEL SWEPT CYRIL

THE RATED division of 2011 Rapid Chess tournament is getting exciting with the sweep of top seed Cyril Montel, Jr. of Tito Cabunagan last week.

In return, Cyril was swept by erstwhile top player of Palau Menandro 'Boy' Manuel to open the field with the top 4 seeds suffering losses after another.

Cyril's record now is 2 wins and 2 losses. Boy defeated Mohammad Manik Hossain on Sunday, March 27 to have a 6-2 slate and now leading the tourney while Tito have 5.5 poitns from 5 wins, 4 losses and a draw for 2nd place.

Roberto Hernandez is traling Tito by half a point after he clobbered newcomer to Palau Jose Celiz in 31 moves of Danish Gambit.

Celiz overlooked a mate in one when he attacked Hernandez' queen with a knight that's covering the undefended g pawn thus resulting in mate.

In the unrated division among Palau Royal Resort's employees, only few games were played with Rudel Roxas adding 2 more points from his 2 wins over Erick Ventinilla.

He has 13-4-1 win-loss-draw record and is the virtual top seed.

Jeffrey Negrillo swept Ronel Gutierrez to seize the 2nd place at 10-7-0 card and overtook the idle Elizalde Madrinan (8-2-1).

Miguel Gancayco is in solo 4th with 7-4-0 followed by Jomar Alerta (4-2-0) and Ventinilla at 4-4-0.

This division will be very busy upon the return from vacation of Ferdie Altea on Tuesday. Joel Gabris hasn't played a single game yet.

Other participants are: Dan Roldan (2-8-0), Randy Sioson (1-9-0), Rey Alenain (0-7-1) and Ronel Gutierrez, who is still looking for that elusive first point.
