NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP TO START APRIL 27
EVEN WITHOUT Jan Berglund, the International Arbiter/Trainer that is helping to develop chess in Palau, the National Chess Championship will start on Sunday, April 27, 2008 at Jean's Boutique and Store.
Mr. Berglund has postponed his trip to Palau on April 23 to new date (May 15, 2008) via Manila from Sweden.
He will catch up when he comes as Paquito 'Pax' Suringa, a cook at Palau Royal Resort, who will have a vacation on April 23 and will be back on May 14, 2008.
He is one of the six players from PRR to participate in the NCC. The others are Palau's no. 4 Roberto Hernandez, Jaime Guevarra, Dennis Lara, Arnel Pama, the chairman of King Royal Chess Club of PRR and Elizalde Madrinan.
Other players who are expected to show their wares are number one Menandro 'Boy' Manuel, Jose Omega, Cyril Montel, Jr., blitz chess specialist Tony Villa, Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic, venue host Gene Pastrana, Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich, Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II, Dennis Gonzales and some inactive players like Jimboy de Jesus, Val Vidar of Palau Pacific Resort, who introduces to Hernandez the new worker in Palau (just a few days here) and has been a 4-time champion in Philippines.
This is also a chance for players to gain international ranking as Mr. Berglund already informed World Chess Federation (FIDE) that this championship will be FIDE-rated.
Mr. Berglund will also join the championship to test the strengths and weaknesses of the potential team members of Palau team to participate in the Dresden, Germany World Chess Olympiad in November where he is willing to captain the Palau team. He can speak Swedish, English and German languages.
He also informed FIDE that the 3rd Ambassador Marino Cup will be FIDE rated and he will invite at least 3 foreing players to compete against Palau's best.
He is also looking for a place to stay or to housesit available house when the owners go off island.
Only 4 games were played in this week in the resumption of Palau Royal Resort Rapid Chess tournament. Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II continued to dominate PRR players and swept Eli, who's very good during practice and seems to struggle in tournament play.
On Monday night, on Pax day off, he lost the first game to Guevarra and drew the 2nd with a whole piece advantage. His earlier agreed match with Paul Garcia and Mestizo didn't materialize as both didn't show up the whole night.

FORMAT OF 2008
NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
ALL IS set for 2008 National Chess Championship with six players from Palau Royal Resort participating to gain international ranking.
Palau's number 4 Roberto Hernandez, with FIDE rating of 1830 will lead the PRR players Jaime Guevarra, Dennis Lara, Arnel Pama, Eli Madrinan and Paquito Suringa to greater opposition against Palau's top rated players.
THE FOLLOWING IS THE FORMAT OF THE TOURNAMENT:
1. The time control is 90 minutes for each player to finish the game with 30 seconds increment per move.
2. Writing chess notation is mandatory in either Algebraic or English (descriptive) notation.
3. It will be a single round-robin event and players will handle the white and black pieces as even as possible. It will be a FIDE rated tournament and players are advised to finish their games without a single default as in will hinder the chance of unrated players to gain international ranking. The most flexible schedule in the world is offered to participants.
4. Palau Royal Resort players have different time schedules and day offs. Other players can play with them at Dormitory 1 in an agreed time and date.
5. Jan Berglund, the International Arbiter/Trainer, will join the tournament to test the weaknesses and strenghts of possible team players to participate in the World Chess Olympiad in Dresden, Germany in November 2008. He will also be the chief arbiter and will captain the Palau team to the Chess Olympiad.
6. Registration fee is $20.00 with half of the collected fees to be given to Mr. Berglund as "appearance fee" and the other half for the cash prizes of the top three finishers.

8. The venue of the tourney is Jean's Boutique and Store in front of Maris Stella School.
In the resumption of Palau Royal Resort Rapid Chess tournament, Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II took the leadership of Class A division with the sweep of Paquito Suringa and have 4 remaining games against Darwin Nisperos and Laurence Abuton.
He will join the NCC and will play a day earlier on Saturday, April 26 against anyone available in the afternoon.
He doesn't know how to write chess notations yet and Hernandez will teach him. In the Class B division, Chat Miraflor informed the organizer that he will lose all his games by default due to schedule conflict.

21 PLAYERS JOIN NATIONAL CHESS CHAMPIONSHIP
THIS YEAR'S National Chess Championship attracts 21 chess players all around Palau to test their chess savvy and get a chance to have international ranking.
It is more than double of the last year's participants with the inclusion of inactive player Jose Misael G. de Jesus, Jr. or 'Jimboy', who played the first game of NCC on Saturday, April 26 against Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich in their Bishop Openig game.
Dittrich sacrficed a knight for a pawn on the 19th move and obtain a strong attack but overlooked another neat knight sacrifice two moves later and succumbed to pressure and resigned on the 28th move.
The first game on Sunday, April 27 was between 28-year old Michael Mercado vs. Jaime Guevarra, a 36-year old pastry chef at Palau Royal Resort and having his rare Sunday day off. Even without much preparation, Guevarra prevailed in 40 moves of Center Counter.
The surprise entree of the NCC is Ken Pastrana, the 10-year old youngest son of Gene Pastrana, who is Palau no. 4 with FIDE rating of 1870 and the venue host of the event which is Jean's Boutique and Store, just across Maris Stella School.
Another surprise entrant is Mohammad Manik Hossain, a Bangladesh national, who always practice with the older Pastrana on weekends.
Ken and Hossain played on Sunday and they drew their game via stalemate as Ken failed to maintain his overwhelming advantage into a victory in another Center Counter game.
Blitz chess specialist Tony Villa scored five consecutive wins against Hossain in 24 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening; over Jimboy in 27 moves of Bishop Opening; against Mercado in a marathon 76 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening; over Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II and basketball player Eric Espartero, who trounced Hossain in 54 moves of Petroff Defence.
Villa will be having a vacation on May 29 and he likes to finish all his games before going. Players are requested to play with him even on non-playing days.
Guevarra halved the point with Jimboy in 40 moves of King's Pawn Opening after realizing that there is no breakthrough in their bishop of opposite color endgame. And Guevarra had a 50% day of chess after losing to Palau's number 2 Jose Omega in their Sicilian Defence game encounter.
Mestizo was winless in 3 tries as he lost also to Jimboy and Espartero. He's neophyte in tournament game where writing chess notations is mandatory. The same fate happened to Mercado as he lost his third game to Espartero.
Omega has set a match against Dennis Lara, a cook at Palau Royal Resort, on Tuesday, April 29 at 12:00 to 3:00 pm at Dormitory 1 of PRR.
Other players who haven't seen action in the opening day are Menandro Manuel, Cyril Montel, Jr., Manny Nedic, who showed up but didn't play, Jess Toldoya, Arnel Pama, Elizalde Madrinan, Paquito Suringa (on vacation and will be back on May 14), Palau's no. 5 Roberto Hernandez, PRR Musician, and Jan Berglund, the International Arbiter/Trainer from Sweden who will come to Palau on May 15.

7-GAME WIN STREAK
KOROR STATE Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich finally ended the surging blitz chess specialist Antonio Villa in a last game marathon match on Sunday, May 04 at Jean's Boutique and Store in the resumption of 2008 Palau National Chess Championship.
After dominating mostly newcomers, Villa succumbed to pressure of being a piece down in an endgame with isolated pawns. He was forced to move a touched piece that resulted in being a piece down.
With Dittrich taking full advantage of the time control that fits his style of play, he exploited his advantage with Villa trying to salvage at least a draw.
With two more victories over the father and son participants on Monday evening, Dittrich is in solo 2nd place and looking forward to his first chess title in Palau.
Other results of previous games: 2nd seed Jose Omega defeated Dennis Lara, a cook at Palau Royal Resort, in 38 moves of Slav Defence in a game held at Dormitory 1 of PRR on April 29th; 5th seed Roberto Hernandez won his first game over Jimboy de Jesus in 29 moves of Sicilian Defence on Saturday, May 03; 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. also plyed his first game on Sunday and drew a tough game with Andres 'Aying' Mestizo in a marathon 76-move of King's Indian Defence; Villa spoiled Elizalde Madrinan's first tournament game with a 35-move conquest of Sicilian Defence; Dittrich dealt Mestizo another loss in 56 moves of Queen's Gambit Accepted.
De Jesus scored a full point over Mercado in 40 moves of Bishop Opening; Mestizo lost to Villa in 31 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening (this game was published last week where it should be Mercado vs. Mestizo); Madrinan suffered another tough loss to Palau first National Master Manny Nedic; Dittrich and Mercado halved the point in another long game; Villa spoiled another debut tournament play of newcomer Elpidio Manaligod; Mestizo lost another game to Nedic.
Madrinan drew with 10-year old Ken Pastrana after the boy accepted his offer of a truce with a whole rook advantage; Manaligod suffered the same fate of Eli and lost his 2nd game to de Jesus; Mercado and de Jesus extracted a full point off Mohammad Manik Hossain, the lone Bangladeshi participant.
Monday evening results: (All players with the black pieces won) Hossain lost to Gene Pastrana, his first game of the tourney; Ken Pastrana lost to Dittrich; Hossain scored his 2nd win by clobbering Mestizo and Pastrana totes a 1-1 slate after losing to Dittrich.
Jess Toldoya, the 2004 Non-master chess champion, withdraw from the tournament after the death of his youngest son. Em-R de Vera, the 2005 Junior Rapid chess champion, will also join the field with Menandro Manuel paying his registration fee of $20.00.
Manuel also confirmed his participation but he had to go to Yap for 2 weeks on May 15, 2008 and will catch up when he returns.

OMEGA, NEDIC STILL UNDEFEATED
Palau's No. 2 player Jose Omega and Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic kept their winning streak intact in the resumption of 2008 Palau National Chess Championship held on Saturday, May 10 and Mother's Day (May 11) at Jean's Boutique and Store.
In a special game at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1 on Wednesday, May 7, Omega dealt Elizalde Madrinan, a cook at PRR, his 3rd loss via 36-move conquest of Sicilian Defence. He followed it up with another whipping of previously unbeaten Cyril Montel, Jr. (Palau's No. 3) in 54 moves of another Sicilian Defence and notched his 6th win of the tourney with a victory over newcomer Elpidio Manaligod in 36 moves of Giocco Piano.
Blitz chess wizard Tony Villa is back in winning column for at least 2 games after nipping Jaime Guevarra, a pastry chef at PRR, in 27 moves of Petroff Defence and 4th seed Roberto Hernandez in 67 moves of Danish Gambit.
Another PRR employee Arnel Pama, a steward, lost to Jimboy de Jesus in 47 moves of Bishop Opening on Saturday afternoon.
The game of the week was the upset of Montel, Jr. of Villa in 54 moves of Irregular King's Pawn Opening where Cyril responded 1. ... Nh6 to Tony's 1. e4. A blunder by Tony on the 27th move made Cyril very cautious not to let the whole point slip away. He spent 17 minutes on his 29th move while Tony spent more than 5 minutes in the game's entirety!
Dennis Lara, the 5th of PRR employee to see action on Sunday, lost to de Jesus in 60 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening while Pama suffered his 2nd straight loss to Manaligod, who had a 50% day after drawing with Hernandez in 63 moves of Danish Gambit.
Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich halved the point with Guevarra in 26 moves of Semi-Slav Defence and suffered his rare loss to Cyril in 37 moves of King's Indian Defence while Nedic took the measure of Lara in 57 moves of Queen's Gambit Accepted.
Villa refused the Blackmar Dimer Gambit of Pama and prevailed in 39 moves and finally a PRR player scored a whole point when Guevarra outwitted Mohammad Manik Hossain in 52 moves of King's Pawn Opening, where Hossain used the same opening as Cyril did in his game against Villa.
Hossain dropped another game to Cyril in a shorter 24 moves of the same opening and Lara was happy enough to draw will Villa in 57 moves of Pirc Defence.
The final game of the day was the Pama vs. Nedic match where the latter accepted the pawn that Villa refused. After only 4 moves, Nedic spent 11 minutes on his 4th move. Showing signs of unfamiliarity with the Blackmar Dimer Gambit or BDG, Nedic was on the defensive most of the time and when Pama missed a good outpost for his knight, Nedic had a sigh of relief after prevailing in 41 moves.

FOR THEIR FIRST LOSS
BLITZ CHESS specialist Tony Villa dealt erstwhile leader and previously unbeaten Jose Omega, a cook at Ashibi Restaurant, and Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic their first loss in the resumption of 2008 Palau National Chess Championship held on Sat. and Sunday, April 19 & 20 at Jean's Boutique and Store.
Villa also defeated venue host Gene Pastrana in their Caro-Kahn encounter on Saturday to take the lead again in the 22-player championship.
Fifth seed Roberto Hernandez scored a full point over Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich in 41 moves of Dutch Defence. And on the 3rd and last game of the day, 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. refused a draw offer from Dennis Lara and prevailed in an exciting endgame of king and pawns.
Lara deviated from a knight sacrifice that will gain him 2 pawns for a minor piece and an excellent prospect of promoting his two unopposed pawns on the queenside.
Before bowing to Villa, Omega clobbered the lone Bangladeshi entrant Mohammad Manik Hossain and Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II while Nedic touted Michael Mercado prior to his first loss.
Aying finally scored a victory after a string of losses by outwitting Pastrana. He proceeded to Palau Royal Resort and dealt Elizalde Madrinan another loss. Eli lost earlier to Pastrana.
OTHER RESULTS OF SUNDAY'S ACTION: Dittrich is back in the winning column after drubbing Hossain; Hernandez took the measure of Mercado in 41 moves of Sicilian Defence; newcomer Elpidio Manaligod maintained his composure after a touch move violation of Hossain and claimed his 3rd win. Hossain put his king in a place where a bishop can capture it and pressed his time clock.
In a FIDE tournament of 90 minutes + 30 seconds/move increment, an illegal move violation will be resumed by moving the touched piece to a legal square. In blitz chess,(Palau style), after pressing the clock, it will be the final move of the player. If he/she didn't move or defended the attacked king, it can be captured and the game is over.

GUEVARRA UPSETS
3RD SEED MONTEL, JR.
PALAU ROYAL Resort's pastry chef Jaime Guevarra scored an upset over 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. in the resumption of 2008 Palau National Chess Championship held on Sunday, May 24 at Jean's Boutique and Store.
Cyril overlooked a neat bishop sacrifice of Jaime on the 33rd move that put him in a passive position instead of having the initiative. After the promotion of the b pawn, Cyril resigned in frustration.
In a special game held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1, 4th seed Roberto Hernandez dealt 2nd seed Jose Omega his 2nd loss in 54 moves of Reti Opening.
On the 26th move, Omega unleashed a pawn thrust that opens the strong diagonal for his bishop. Hernandez offered a bishop sacrifice that Omega had refused.
The ensuing plays result in an overwhelming advantage for Hernandez. Jose tried in vain to force at least a stalemate but Hernandez didn't fall to the trick.
In the only game on Saturday afternoon, Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic drubbed Guevarra and keep his sight for another title while Paquito Suringa, Jr., who just came back from vacation, played his first tournament game and lost to co-worker Dennis Lara in a game played also at PRR Dorm 1 at 12:00 midnight.
OTHER RESULTS OF SUNDAY'S GAMES: Omega bounced back from defeat and nipped Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich in 43 moves of Slav Defence while Lara lost to Dittrich in 43 moves of Ruy Lopez.
Blitz chess specialist Tony Villa made short work of 10-year old contestant Ken Pastrana in just 16 moves of Giocco Piano. Villa will go home on the 3oth of May. He's not sure if he will come back and had 3 remaining games against Jan Berglund, Menandro Manuel and Suringa.

IN THE resumption of their adjourned game last Sunday, June 01 (President's Day), Palau's number 3 chess player Cyril Montel, Jr. proved to have a deeper analysis of his adjourned game against No. 4 Roberto Hernandez and prevailed 7 moves later and edged out Hernandez with 5-2-1 win-loss-draw slate.
In a sepcial game held at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1, number 2 Jose Omega emerged victoriuos over Paquito 'Pax' Suringa in 41 moves of Center Counter. Pax suffered 2 more setbacks against co-employees Dennis Lara in 61 moves of French Defence and Elizalde Madrinan and finally he is in the win column with a victory over another co-worker Arnel Pama, who suffered his 5th consecutive losses.
In the only game on Saturday, Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic remains the only player with the least loss (one) after clobbering the lone Bangladeshi entrant Mohammad Manik Hossain and now totes a 7-1-0 card.
Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich notched his 8th points out of 13 games with a win over the struggling Madrinan, who is undergoing intense practice to regain his top form.
Dittrich will have a longer vacation and he wants to play the two players from PRR that he hadn't played yet--Pama and Pax, who is available on his day off (Saturday).
Em-R de Vera, the junior rapid champion of 2005 Rapid chess tournament, has showed up and will join the field of 22 players in the ongoing 2008 Palau National Chess Championship while Mario Ramos, inactive for 4 years,showed interest to join but his schedule prevented him from participating.

PAX NOTCHES 2ND WIN
IN THEIR scheduled match on Saturday, June 07 at Jean's Boutique and Store, Paquito 'Pax' Suringa luckily scored an upset over Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich when the latter missed a chance to go ahead with a whole piece advantage and lost instead after a poor defensive play.
With a mate in 2 facing him, Dittrich resigned in vain when analysis showed his winning lines.
Earlier in the afternoon, Jose Misael de Jesus trounced Suringa to keep the crowded 4th spot and abreast with other contenders. And on playing day (Sunday), five players showed up but no games were played.
Andres 'Aying' Mestizo II just practiced with Dittrich while venue host Gene Pastrana played blitz chess with Manny Nedic.
Fourth seed Roberto Hernandez showed up at 5:20 pm and didn't play as he has to work at 6:00. He just set up the Dittrich vs. Arnel Pama match to be held on Monday at Palau Royal Resort Dormitory 1.
Mestizo was also asked to play at PRR as three contestants who are working there are having their Monday day off.
In an exciting game at PRR Dorm 1, Pama employed his pet Blackdimer Gambit against Craig. He is excited as his opponent followed the book-line continuation of the BDG. He made some weak moves that Dittrich exploited to be ahead by 2 pawns
Pama recovered those valuable pawns in the endgame but Craig reorganized his pieces and won in a marathon game. Pama suffered his 7th consecutive losses and was the only player without a win yet.

ELI ESCAPES WITH A WIN
IT'S THE first serious chess tournament participation of Elizalde 'Eli' Madrinan, a cook at Palau Royal Resort, and he prevailed once more over first timer Elpidio Manaligod in the featured game on Sunday, June 22 in the resumption of 2008 Palau National Chess Championship held at Jean's Boutique and Store.
Eli blundered away a bishop in the middle game in exchange of two pawns and positional advantage. Manaligod missed a knight capture of a pawn in the ensuing play and play it safe.
With some accurate maneuver, Eli managed to promote his 2 pawns into queens and mated the skidding Manaligod to claim his 3rd victory. His other 2 wins are from co-employees Paquito 'Pax' Suringa and Arnel Pama, who has yet to win a game.
In the first game of the day, Manaligod subdued Suringa in a marathon 70-move French Defence game where some passive play cost Pax the game. He missed a strong rook capture that will pave the way for his passed pawn and put Manaligod on the defensive side.
Second seed Jose Omega showep up at the tournament site and played one game against Pama. The game is scheduled on Wednesday at PRR Dormitory 1 but they played it there to save time.
As usual, Pama have a good opening repertoire but his weakness in the middle game was exploited by Omega and mated Pama on the 38 moves of Caro-Kahn Defence. With the victory, Omega seized the 2nd spot in the standings from Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic, who showed up late in the afternoon and not enough time to set a match with 4th seed Roberto Hernandez, as he has to work at 6:00 pm.
Their scheduled match on Saturday, June 28 is not possible as Hernandez will work on the 3rd Anniversary of Palau Royal Resort and the grand opening of PRR beach.

OMEGA DEALT NEDIC HIS SECOND LOSS
PALAU'S TOP 4 players are now sporting at least 2 losses in the standings of 2008 Palau National Chess Championship after 2nd seed Jose Omega employed the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defence to outdueled Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic in more than 40 moves of the crucial top seeds encounter.
The game was played on Tuesday, July 01 as no game was played on Sunday because the 5 players who showed up already played each other.
Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich, Nedic, Dennis Lara, and Roberto Hernandez of Palau Royal Resort, Omega and venue host Gene Pastrana just practiced blitz chess.
Last week, Elpidio Manaligod was present but Dittrich was not available. In their 5 blitz matches, Omega won the first 3 and lost the last 2. He is in top form now to be the next National Master if he will win the championship.
The other National Master Menandro 'Boy' Manuel has come back from Yap but didn't show up last week. He paid for the registration fee of 2005 Rapid Chess junior champion Em-R de Vera, who haven't play a singel game yet.
The other top players with at least 2 losses are Tony Villa, 3rd seed Cyril Montel, Jr. and Hernandez, who are both holding a 5-2-1 win-loss-draw slate.
That single draw might be the deciding factor to Omega's chances as he won 12 and allowed no drawn game. His toughest opponent is Manuel, the co-defending champion and has been Palau's top player since 2005.
THE DREADED DANISH GAMBIT--This week's featured chess defence is the Danish Gambit, where 3 pawns were offered to gain rapid development. 1. e4 e5 2. d4 exd4 3. c3 dxc3 4. Bc4 cxb2 5. Bxb2... at this point, white already give up 2 free pawns but his development is very rapid and about to give up another one. 5. ...Bb4+ 6. Nc3 Nf6 7. Nge2 generously giving the 3rd pawn. 7. ...Nxe4 8. 0-0 Nxc3 9. Nxc3 0-0, the best alternative for black. 10. Nd5 attacking the bishop and threatening the neat knight sacrifice on f6. 10. ... Be7? A mistake by Karpovian, the online chess Canadian opponent of Hernandez at chess.com. 11. Nxe7+ Qxe7 12. Qg4 threatening mate on g7.
Realizing the unstoppable mate after 12. ... g6 13. Qd4, Karpovian resigned as Hernandez avenged his first 2 losses to him in their Sicilian Defence (Svesnikov Variation) and Sicilian Defence (Dragon Variation) games earlier.

CRAIG SCALPS ANOTHER MASTER
MENANDRO 'Boy' MANUEL has been Palau's top player in the last three years and being inactive from competitive chess in the last few months might be the reason of his skidding play.
Last Sunday, July 20 he was drubbed by Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich in a marathon 60 moves of Queen's Pawn Opening. A pawn thrust on the 25th move gave Dittrich a whole piece advantage that he sustained through the endgame.
After the last exchange of Manuel's pawn, Dittrich is ahead by two pawns with his king safely protected by the g pawn and his rook prevented Manuel's king from stopping the promotion of the h pawn.
In May 04, 2008, Dittrich snapped Tony Villa's 7-game winning streak and dealt the blitz chess master his first loss of the 2008 Palau National Chess Championship.
Manuel became Palau's 2nd National Master after capturing the 2006 Palau National Chess Championship with co-champion Manny Nedic. He was assigned twice in Yap that made him missed the first 2 months of the tourney.
His game against Dennis Lara, a cook at Palau Royal Resort, ended in a fighting draw after another marathon 75 moves of French Defence. He can't convert his one pawn advantage into a win in a difficult bishop-of-opposite color endgame because of Lara's excellent handling of the endgame. The game was held at PRR Dormitory 1 on July 15.
Manuel had won another long encounter against Jimboy de Jesus in 51 moves of Sicilian Defence on Saturday, July 19 at Jean's Boutique and Store and now have a 3-1-1 win-loss-draw slate. He is scheduled to face Palau's number 2 Jose Omega on Saturday.
In his latest email to Roberto Hernandez, Jan Berglund asked him to give him as many passport details of all those that might come into questions of going to Dresden, Germany (where the World Chess Olympiad will be held in November 12-25) now and/or for other future international chess events.
Hernandez will ask Francis 'Sno' Temaungil, Tutii Joe Chilton, Morton Sawaichi, Omega, Lara, Villa, de Jesus, Dittrich and Jaime Guevarra to fax their passport details to Mr. Berglund.

IDLE WEEK OF NCC
NOT A single game was played in the resumption of adversary in the ongoing 2008 Palau National Chess Championship as players have conflict in their schedules on Sunday afternoon, August 10 at Jean's Boutique and Store.
Palau's first National Master Manny Nedic arrived at 5:00 pm and not enough time for a match with 4th seed Roberto Hernandez, the musician of Palau Royal Resort, as he had to work at 6:00 pm. He played with blitz games with venue host Gene Pastrana and Koror State Legal Counsel Craig Dittrich. He won all his games against the two.
The chess tournament of Iglesia Ni Cristo (Church of Christ) will start on Monday, August 18 at the church premises at 9:00 pm. Some of the format that will be changed is the touch move rule and writing chess moves.
It was suggested that in the classification round, writing chess notation is not mandatory. They will be strict only in the round-robin finals of Class A and B.
Practice is now in full swing with their Pastor Eric showing some toughness against the current chairman of King Royals Chess Club of PRR Abraham 'Abe' Francisco.
The tournament moderator Pquito Suringa practice rapid chess against Jaime Guevarra at Dormitory 1 of PRR. Suringa and Francisco are the top seeds of the tourney initiated by Philippine Ambassador to Palau Ramoncito Marino.
It was postponed earlier this year and now it will be held along with other games such as scrabble, dama (Chinese checkers) and dart, where most players are joining.
IT SEEMS THAT THE FINAL ROSTER OF THE PALAU CHESS TEAM TO THE WORLD CHESS OLYMPIAD IN DRESDEN, GERMANY IN NOVEMBER 12-25, 2008 WILL BE COMPOSED OF PALAU'S TOP PLAYER MENANDRO 'BOY' MANUEL (Board 1), MANNY NEDIC (Board 2), ROBERTO HERNANDEZ (Board 3), CYRIL MONTEL, JR. (Board 4) and reserve GENE PASTRANA.
The organizer of the Olympiad will provide the free board and lodging of the team that will included Jan Berglund as Delegate/Coach. The FIDE Congress will also be held during the event.
Mr. Berglund can have anybody not to play on that day to attend with him in the meeting. He is expected to come to Palau to train the Palau team, which is rated 148th in the world just ahead of British Virgin Islands and Bahamas.
